networkitemfactory.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by the Explorer shell and network-discovery features, not a Visual C++ or DirectX runtime. If Windows says it is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows servicing with updates, DISM, and SFC instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
NetworkItem Factory belongs to the Windows network-browsing and network-discovery stack. It can be involved when File Explorer displays computers, devices, and shared resources on a network. Microsoft has documented Windows Explorer problems involving this component when Network Discovery is enabled, particularly in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The directory names are counterintuitive: System32 commonly contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Do not copy a file between these folders simply because the filename matches.
Microsoft has published separate x86 and x64 builds of this file for older Windows releases, so there is no single version or file size that applies to every Windows installation. Do not use filename, size, or folder location alone to judge whether a copy is genuine.
Causes by symptom
| Symptom | What it usually indicates | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “networkitemfactory.dll is missing” | The file was deleted, quarantined, or damaged | Install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because networkitemfactory.dll was not found” | Windows cannot locate the file or a required dependency | Repair Windows components rather than copying only the named file |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL may exist, but another dependency may be missing | Run DISM and SFC, then inspect recent system changes |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Corruption, incompatible architecture, or tampering | Check the signature and repair the component store |
| Explorer crashes while browsing Network | An Explorer, network-discovery, shell-extension, or filter-driver problem | Update Windows and investigate Explorer crash details |
| Only one user account is affected | A profile, shell extension, or per-user security problem is possible | Test another Windows profile |
| The issue began after antivirus cleanup | The security product may have quarantined the file | Review quarantine before restoring anything |
| The error returns after repair | Disk corruption, malware, or a failed servicing operation may remain | Back up data and investigate storage and system health |
The exact cause cannot be identified from the filename alone. A DLL listed in an Explorer crash report may be present in the process without being the component that caused the crash.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
An incomplete update or servicing failure can leave Windows components mismatched. Start with Windows Update before attempting manual recovery.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update, including any servicing or cumulative update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Repeat the check after restarting until Windows reports that the system is up to date.
- Reproduce the original problem by opening File Explorer and selecting Network, or by starting the application that displayed the message.
If the error started immediately after an update and Windows offers a recovery option, note the update involved before removing anything. Do not search for an isolated DLL package as an alternative to the correct Windows update.
For Windows 7, use the exact edition and architecture when locating an applicable update in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Windows 7 has a different servicing history from Windows 10 and Windows 11, and an update intended for another architecture may worsen the problem.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends repairing the component store with DISM before running System File Checker. DISM supplies the repair source that SFC may need to restore protected Windows files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Keep the window open even if progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected feature again.
A successful DISM operation indicates that Windows completed the image repair. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corruption that it could not repair. If it repaired files, restart before testing.
If DISM says that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation image as a repair source. The image must match the installed Windows version, edition, language, and architecture. Microsoft explains the supported process in Repair a Windows image.
Do not repeatedly run SFC without addressing a DISM source failure. If the component store itself is damaged, SFC may not have a healthy copy from which to restore networkitemfactory.dll.
When the manual DISM and SFC process becomes difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its full version handles the repair; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct foundation.
Fix 3: Check whether security software quarantined the file
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a system file after a false detection, malware incident, or failed cleanup.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
networkitemfactory.dllor a related Windows component. - Review the detection path, publisher, and action taken.
- Do not restore a file solely because its filename is correct.
- Restore it only when the item is verified as a false positive and the file is digitally signed by Microsoft.
- Run Scan options, choose Full scan, and allow the scan to finish.
- Run DISM and SFC afterward.
Third-party security products have their own quarantine and history screens. Check those as well. If the file was found outside the Windows directory, especially in a user-writable folder, treat it as suspicious rather than as the missing system copy.
Fix 4: Confirm the file location and digital signature
This check helps distinguish a missing Windows file from an unofficial copy.
- Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Run:
where /r C:Windows networkitemfactory.dll
- Note every returned path.
- In File Explorer, right-click each candidate file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that the signer is Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Corporation and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A file in System32 or SysWOW64 is not automatically trustworthy, and a file outside the Windows directory is not automatically malicious. The signature, file behavior, and security scan matter more than the name.
If the file is present but Windows still reports that the module cannot be found, a dependency may be missing. The message does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. DISM and SFC are safer than copying a second version over the existing file.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this problem
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose the registration entry point Windows expects. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
Running:
regsvr32 networkitemfactory.dll
is not the normal fix for this Windows component and may produce an error about a missing DllRegisterServer entry point. It does not repair a corrupted component store, replace a missing dependency, or correct an architecture mismatch.
Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead. Avoid commands copied from generic DLL repair pages unless Microsoft specifically documents them for the component and Windows version involved.

Fix 6: Check Explorer, profiles, and network components
If the file is present and its signature is valid, the problem may be limited to Explorer or one user profile.
Test another Windows account
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users.
- Choose Add account and create a temporary local account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Open File Explorer and test Network.
If the error occurs only in the original profile, inspect recently installed Explorer shell extensions, context-menu tools, network utilities, and security software. A new profile can identify a profile-specific problem, but it does not prove that the DLL is globally healthy.
Check network-related Windows features
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Review features related to legacy network discovery or file-sharing compatibility only if your environment requires them.
- Do not enable random features to replace the DLL.
- Restart if Windows changes a feature.
- Test Explorer again.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 handle network discovery differently from older releases. Enable network discovery through Settings or Control Panel only when needed, and ensure the Network Discovery and Function Discovery services are configured appropriately for your network.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when symptoms point to networking
networkitemfactory.dll is not a network driver. Driver replacement is relevant only when the error is accompanied by lost connectivity, adapter failures, repeated network resets, or Device Manager warnings.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and review the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver changes.
- If the problem began after a driver update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
Do not download a driver from an unverified driver archive. Use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
When identifying outdated drivers manually becomes tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers need attention, while the full version performs the installation; it is optional and does not replace DISM or SFC for a damaged Windows DLL.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or an in-place repair
Use System Restore when the issue began recently and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace malware removal or fix a failing disk. Back up important files first.

Windows 7 and Network Discovery
Microsoft documented a Windows Explorer crash affecting Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 when Network Discovery was enabled. The related hotfix file list included networkitemfactory.dll, NetworkExplorer.dll, and Networkmap.dll. This history explains why some reports connect the filename with Explorer and network browsing.
For Windows 7, apply the correct Microsoft update for the installed edition and architecture, then run the supported repair tools available for that release. If the computer remains on an obsolete Windows version, moving to a supported release is safer than collecting individual system files from unofficial sources.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading networkitemfactory.dll from a random DLL website can introduce malware, an altered binary, or the wrong build. A 32-bit file may not work where a 64-bit file is required, and replacing one DLL will not repair a missing dependency or a damaged component store.
There is no verified consumer-facing standalone Microsoft download intended to replace this file. Restore it through Windows Update, DISM with a matching Microsoft installation source, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair. Manual copying is appropriate only for controlled offline recovery using a matching, Microsoft-sourced component.
FAQ
Is networkitemfactory.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. It is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Explorer and network-discovery functionality. Reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal repair for this filename.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into System32 or SysWOW64. Repair Windows so it restores the correct file and its dependencies.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?
The named file may depend on another missing or damaged module. Permissions, servicing corruption, architecture mismatch, or an invalid binary can produce similar loader messages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs the file always installed on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Do not assume that every build contains the same file in the same form. Windows components vary by release, edition, architecture, and servicing level.
What if the error appears only in one application?
The application may be triggering Explorer or network functionality, but the filename alone does not identify the owner. Repair Windows first, then update or repair the application if its own files or integration are damaged.
What if Explorer still crashes after SFC succeeds?
Review Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application for the crash details. Then investigate Explorer shell extensions, network filter drivers, security software, recent updates, and disk health. A successful SFC scan does not prove that every Explorer crash has been fixed.
