Buy the Windows, macOS or Linux edition if you want the Aurora Toolset, Dungeon Master client, user-made mods and the broadest multiplayer community. Choose Nintendo Switch or Xbox One if you want controller-first play, portability (Switch) or cross-platform co-op with PC and the other supported console. PlayStation 4 supports online co-op with other PS4 players, but not cross-platform play.
Every console edition includes the original campaign, Shadows of Undrentide, Hordes of the Underdark and a set of premium adventures supplied as free downloads with purchase. PC storefronts package content differently, so check the exact edition and DLC list before paying. Prices, stock and discounts are regional and change frequently.

Quick verdict: which platform should you buy?
Use this decision rule:
- Choose PC (Steam or GOG) for the complete toolset, mods, mouse-and-keyboard controls, Dungeon Master sessions and the widest choice of community content.
- Choose Nintendo Switch for portable, controller-based play and cross-play with Xbox One, Windows, Linux and macOS. Nintendo Switch Online is required for online multiplayer.
- Choose Xbox One for television-based controller play, the same cross-play group as Switch, and access to selected persistent worlds.
- Choose PlayStation 4 only if playing with other PS4 owners is sufficient. Its online co-op is limited to the PlayStation network and it has no cross-platform play.
Beamdog describes the package as more than 100 hours of award-winning adventures. That figure is a product-page estimate, not a guaranteed completion time; character builds, difficulty, side quests and multiplayer sessions can make a playthrough substantially longer.

Beamdog’s console FAQ gives December 3, 2019 as the console release date. The same FAQ records Xbox multiplayer as available from January 2020 and says Switch received online multiplayer in a patch on December 3, 2019. Store pages can show different labels or bundles, so confirm the listing for your territory before checkout.

Buying the PC edition: Steam versus GOG
Steam
Steam is the straightforward choice if your friends already use Steam or you want the game integrated with an existing PC library. Its current listing separates the base game from a wider DLC catalogue. The catalogue includes Infinite Dungeons, Wyvern Crown of Cormyr, Pirates of the Sword Coast, Darkness Over Daggerford, Tyrants of the Moonsea, Dark Dreams of Furiae, Doom of Icewind Dale, soundtrack products and portrait products. Do not assume that buying the base listing automatically grants every item shown on the store page; read the bundle contents and each DLC description.
GOG
GOG documents Standard and Digital Deluxe editions. The Digital Deluxe listing adds a 212-page manual, an artbook, an HD art pack, a premium-module re-installer and soundtrack extras. Those are downloadable or documentation bonuses, not additional console-style hardware features. GOG can be preferable when you want installer ownership and offline installation options, but multiplayer still depends on the game’s network services and compatible versions.
What the PC storefront choice does not change
Both official PC listings provide access to the computer edition’s defining features: Aurora Toolset content creation, the Dungeon Master client and installation of supported mods. The storefront is not a substitute for checking a module’s requirements. A community adventure may require a particular hak pack, override file, portrait set or game version, and those requirements are separate from whether you bought through Steam or GOG.
What comes with the console editions?
Beamdog’s 2019 console FAQ says the disc includes the base Neverwinter Nights campaign, Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark. It also lists the following premium adventures as free downloads with purchase:

“Included” has two parts on a console: the core game and expansions are on the disc or base entitlement, while premium adventures may need to be redeemed and downloaded from the platform store. Ensure the console has storage space and an internet connection before starting a new module. A physical copy does not remove the platform’s normal account, update or network requirements.
How the DLC differs on PC
PC stores present a broader, itemized catalogue than the console bundle. Steam’s current listing names additional products such as Infinite Dungeons, Tyrants of the Moonsea, Dark Dreams of Furiae and Doom of Icewind Dale, alongside modules that also appear in the console entitlement. GOG’s key distinction is the Standard-versus-Digital-Deluxe bonus package rather than a single “all console downloads” label.
Before buying a second copy or a standalone module, compare:
- Whether the module is already included in your edition.
- Whether the store sells it as a playable adventure, soundtrack, portrait pack or documentation extra.
- Whether you need the same storefront and platform as your multiplayer group for convenient updates and invitations.
- Whether a discount is recurring, temporary or limited to a regional promotion. Current prices and discount periods are not fixed by the product specifications.

Beamdog explicitly states that online multiplayer co-op is available but couch co-op is not available on Switch, PS4 or Xbox One. A second controller therefore does not turn a console into a split-screen or same-console campaign. Multiplayer means online sessions.

Beamdog says persistent worlds can host more than 250 players at a time. That is a stated capacity figure for a world, not a promise that every world is full or that a console can host that many players locally. On console, Switch and Xbox One can access the selected worlds Arelith and Ravenloft: Prisoners of the Mist; PS4 cannot access this feature.
How to play with friends
Switch or Xbox One with a PC friend
- Install the same game edition and apply the latest available update on each device.
- On Switch, confirm that every participant has Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo also says multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player; this requirement concerns supported online play, not couch co-op.
- Have the host create or load a campaign, expansion or supported module and invite the other players through the platform’s online flow.
- Use the in-game server or session list to join. If the session does not appear, verify that all players selected the same module and that no participant is running an incompatible custom-content setup.
- For a persistent world, select one of the worlds supported on the console edition, such as Arelith or Ravenloft: Prisoners of the Mist. Console players can join these worlds but cannot build them with the computer tools.
PS4 group
- Confirm that every player owns the PS4 edition and has the required PlayStation online access for their account.
- One player hosts a campaign, expansion or campaign module.
- Other PS4 players join through the session or friends interface.
- Do not expect a Switch, Xbox One, Windows, Linux or macOS player to join the PS4 session; Beamdog documents no cross-platform play for PS4.
PC group
- Install the same official game version and agree on a storefront or update channel where practical.
- For a stock campaign, host the desired campaign or module and share the session details.
- For a community module, install every required file exactly as its author specifies, then confirm that all players have matching versions.
- If you are running a persistent world, use the computer tools and server documentation appropriate to that world. The Dungeon Master client and Aurora Toolset are computer-only.

What PC owners can do
The computer edition includes the Aurora Toolset for building adventures and the Dungeon Master client for supervising or influencing a live session. PC owners can also install supported mods and community modules. These capabilities are the main reason to choose Windows, macOS or Linux over a console when you want to create content rather than only play it.
What console owners cannot do
Console editions omit the Aurora Toolset and Dungeon Master client, and Beamdog’s FAQ says mods are not supported on console. Switch and Xbox One can still join selected persistent worlds created with Windows tools, but console owners cannot create content with those tools or install the PC mod ecosystem locally. PS4 lacks the documented persistent-world access as well.

Console interfaces are designed for gamepads. The Switch version adds portability, while Xbox One and PS4 target television play. Nintendo’s listing says online multiplayer requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership and one compatible controller per player. Because couch co-op is unavailable, buying extra controllers does not create a local split-screen mode; the controller requirement applies to players participating in supported multiplayer sessions.

Beamdog says it has no current plans to add controller support to the computer version. Treat that as the documented position for the FAQ’s review date, not a guarantee about every future update. If you need native gamepad controls, choose a console edition; if you need precise toolset editing and extensive mod management, choose PC.
Beamdog account retirement and ownership continuity
Beamdog’s current Store FAQ says retirement of the Beamdog client and store does not end multiplayer. Owners can obtain one key for each owned game or DLC item and redeem those keys on a platform of their choice: Epic Games, Steam or GOG. The FAQ also says DLC can then be purchased on that platform.
This transfer path is for existing owners and does not mean that every historical purchase automatically appears in every storefront library. Keep your Beamdog account credentials and proof of ownership available, follow the key-claim process shown in the current FAQ, and redeem each key on the intended account. Check the receiving store’s regional availability before choosing where to migrate.
Prices, stock and regional checks
There is no single reliable worldwide price for this game. Physical stock, digital discounts, tax, currency conversion, console-store policies and edition names vary by country. Check the retailer or platform store immediately before buying for:

- The exact platform and edition name.
- Whether premium adventures are listed as included, free downloads or separate purchases.
- Whether a soundtrack, portrait pack or artbook is an extra rather than playable content.
- Online-service requirements, storage size and controller requirements.
- Whether the item is a new purchase or a transfer key for an existing Beamdog owner.
Do not treat an old sale price, a retailer’s out-of-stock page or a 2019 console FAQ as a current offer. The documented product features are stable buying criteria; price and inventory require a live regional check.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
“I bought a console copy and expected mods.”
That expectation conflicts with the platform design. Console editions do not support mod installation or include the Aurora Toolset and Dungeon Master client. Return to the PC edition if custom content or creation tools are essential.
“My PS4 friend cannot join my Switch session.”
That is expected. Switch cross-play includes Xbox One, Windows, Linux and macOS, while PS4 online play is documented for PS4 users only. The practical fix is for everyone to use the same supported cross-play group or for the PS4 players to host a separate PS4 session.
“We have two controllers, but local co-op will not start.”
Beamdog states that couch co-op is unavailable on all three consoles. Use online multiplayer instead, with each player on a supported device and account.
“A premium module is not visible after buying a physical edition.”
Console premium adventures may be free downloads rather than files on the disc. Open the platform store with the purchasing account, check the game’s included add-ons, redeem any entitlement and allow the download to finish. If the store still does not show the item, verify the region and edition before purchasing it again.
“A community module will not load for the whole group.”
Community content is a PC workflow. Confirm that every PC player installed the same module files and required dependencies, that the host selected the correct campaign, and that no one is trying to join from a console edition that cannot install the mod.
