If News and interests is missing, first identify your Windows version. On Windows 10, right-click an empty area of the taskbar, open News and interests, and choose Show icon and text (or the icon-only option). On Windows 11, the feature is part of Widgets: open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, enable Widgets, then open its Discover dashboard for the news stream. If the control is absent or the dashboard is empty, monitor placement, taskbar alignment, Windows version, browser components, account personalization, or an administrator policy may be responsible.
Which Windows feature are you trying to restore?
“News and interests” is the Windows 10 name for a taskbar feed containing weather, news, sports, stocks, traffic and other cards. Windows 11 moved the comparable experience into Widgets; its news content appears in the Discover dashboard rather than as a separately installable News widget.

The menu names are not interchangeable. Following Windows 10 instructions on Windows 11 will not create a missing News and interests entry, and looking for a standalone News toggle in Windows 11 can make a working Widgets installation appear broken.

- Move the pointer to an empty section of the taskbar and right-click.
- Point to News and interests.
- Select Show icon and text to display the weather and feed indicator, or choose the icon-only mode if you want a smaller taskbar button.
- Click the new taskbar indicator to open the cards and news feed.
If the submenu shows Turn off rather than a display option, the feature is currently disabled; select the display mode instead. If the entire News and interests entry is missing, continue with the prerequisite and policy checks below rather than repeatedly restarting Explorer.
How do I restore the news feed in Windows 11?
Windows 11 exposes the feed through Widgets. Turning on the Widgets taskbar item restores the entry point; the stories themselves are in Discover.

- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Taskbar.
- Under Taskbar items, turn Widgets on.
- Select the Widgets button on the taskbar and open the Discover dashboard to view news.
You can test the feature without changing the taskbar by pressing Windows key + W. If the panel opens with that shortcut, the service is present and only the taskbar button is hidden. Windows 11 does not provide a separate “add News” switch equivalent to the Windows 10 context-menu item; Discover is the relevant news surface.
Why is the taskbar button missing even though the feature should be available?
A missing button is usually a visibility, display, version or policy issue rather than proof that the feed has been uninstalled. Check these conditions in order.
Confirm the Windows release
Microsoft documents News and interests for Windows 10 version 1909 or later. On an earlier Windows 10 release, the documented taskbar menu may not exist. On Windows 11, use the Widgets path instead of searching for the old label.

Check the monitor and taskbar position
News and interests is available only on the primary monitor and when the taskbar is aligned to the bottom of the screen. A button can therefore disappear when a laptop is using a secondary display as the active workspace, or when the taskbar has been moved to another edge.
- Make the display containing the taskbar your primary monitor in Settings > System > Display.
- Return the taskbar to the bottom edge if your configuration allows a different alignment.
- Disconnect a secondary monitor temporarily to determine whether the control returns.
Check the browser component
Microsoft’s accessibility guidance names the latest Chromium-based Microsoft Edge as a prerequisite for News and interests. An outdated or damaged browser component can prevent the feed interface from loading even when the taskbar option is visible. Update Edge through its normal settings and restart Windows before testing again.
Look for a managed-device restriction
On a work or school computer, an administrator can remove the feature and its settings interface. The relevant Group Policy setting is Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and interests > Enable news and interests on the taskbar.

Why do I see the weather icon but no news stories?
An icon with an empty or nearly empty board indicates a feed or personalization problem, not necessarily a missing taskbar feature. The service only displays material that matches the account’s language, location and personalization settings, and changes may take time to appear.

Review language and location
Open the feed’s personalization controls and verify the selected region and language. An unusual regional setting can limit available sources; a language mismatch can leave fewer cards than expected. After changing either value, refresh the dashboard and allow time for the recommendations to update.
Refresh the feed instead of reinstalling Windows
Use the feed’s refresh command, close the panel, and open it again. If the board is still blank, sign out of the Widgets experience and sign back in. This refreshes the account session that supplies personalization data without deleting the Windows profile.
Update Store-delivered components
A Microsoft Q&A moderator recommends opening Microsoft Store > Library, selecting Get updates, restarting the computer, and testing the feed again. This is support guidance rather than a guaranteed fix, but it can repair stale Widgets-related components.
Test a new Windows profile
If the feed works in a newly created Windows profile, the original profile’s account or personalization state is likely damaged. Keep the test profile only long enough to isolate the cause; move to profile repair or organizational support rather than repeatedly changing taskbar settings.

Does Windows 10 support ending affect this problem?
Yes, but it is a separate issue from a hidden taskbar control. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; after that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance and security fixes ended. A News and interests setting can still be present on an installed Windows 10 system, but an unsupported operating system should not be treated as a fully maintained environment.
