Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Digital Games Will Have Different MSRPs

Nintendo’s Switch 2 game pricing depends on the title, format and date: U.S. launch prices in April 2025 were the same for physical and digital editions in Nintendo’s examples, but a policy beginning with May 2026 preorders sets different MSRPs for new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2. Nintendo has not announced one universal price gap, and retailers may charge prices that differ from MSRP.

What Nintendo’s variable-pricing policy means

Beginning with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book in May 2026, Nintendo says new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 will have an MSRP different from their physical versions. The policy is about the suggested retail prices for those formats; it does not establish a single price difference across games or cover every Switch 2 title. Nintendo’s pricing statement also says title pricing may vary.

Nintendo explains that physical and digital formats have different production and distribution costs, and says the distinction offers players more choice. Its statement does not quantify those costs or give a standard digital-to-physical discount.

Why are Switch 2 games different prices?

Nintendo points to costs associated with producing and distributing each format. Separately, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in the May 2025 Financial Results Briefing Q&A that software pricing also takes account of factors such as larger game files and longer development periods. He said Nintendo would continue to consider an appropriate price for each title. These are factors Nintendo says it considers, not a formula that predicts the MSRP of a particular game. Are physical Switch 2 games more expensive than digital?

Under the policy Nintendo announced for new Nintendo-published digital exclusives, physical and digital MSRPs differ, but Nintendo does not say that physical editions are always more expensive or specify the size or direction of the difference. A retailer’s actual price may also differ from either MSRP. Compare the same title and edition in the same region before deciding which format costs less.

How much does Mario Kart World cost on Switch 2?

Nintendo of America announced a U.S. launch MSRP of $79.99 for Mario Kart World on April 18, 2025, applying to both physical and digital versions at launch. This is a historical U.S. MSRP, not a guarantee of the current price at a retailer. Nintendo’s other example was Donkey Kong Bananza at a U.S. launch MSRP of $69.99 for both formats. Nintendo’s April 2025 launch announcement records those prices.

Does Nintendo set one price for every Switch 2 game?

No single price applies to every game. Nintendo’s April 2025 examples showed equal physical and digital launch MSRPs for two titles; its later policy, starting with May 2026 preorders, distinguishes the MSRPs for a defined category of new digital games. These statements concern different dates and scopes, not a universal increase for all Switch 2 software.

For a meaningful price comparison, match the title and edition, physical or digital format, country and tax treatment, and whether you are comparing Nintendo’s MSRP or a retailer’s current selling price. Check listings close to purchase, since retailer prices can vary.

Are Nintendo’s game prices the same at every retailer?

No. Nintendo says retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and prices may vary by title. MSRP is therefore a reference point, not necessarily the amount charged at checkout. Compare current same-region listings for the same edition and format.

Switch 2 console prices are a separate issue

Nintendo’s May 2026 investor presentation schedules the U.S. Switch 2 console MSRP to rise from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. That is a hardware-price revision, not evidence of a change to game software prices. Nintendo lists separate prices and dates for Japan and Europe. See Nintendo’s May 2026 investor presentation.
