Nintendo Switch 2 supports up to 4K output when docked, but only in games that support 4K, and Nintendo caps 4K output at 60 fps. Its built-in screen is a 7.9-inch LCD—not a 4K display—with HDR and support for up to 120 fps. Those are separate modes, not a promise of 4K at 120 fps.

Nintendo Switch 2 specifications at a glance

Feature Nintendo Switch 2 Original Nintendo Switch
Built-in display 7.9-inch LCD; HDR; up to 120 fps, according to Nintendo UK’s feature page (Nintendo UK) Smaller LCD on the standard model; the OLED model has a 7-inch OLED screen. The comparison here is limited to details established in Nintendo’s cited Switch 2 materials.
TV output Up to 4K at a maximum of 60 fps, with the included dock, compatible TV and supported game (Nintendo, 2025) Not stated in the cited Switch 2 source.
Internal storage 256 GB; Nintendo described this as eight times the capacity of Switch models other than the OLED model (Nintendo, 2025) Not stated in the cited Switch 2 source.
Storage expansion microSD Express cards for added system storage Original microSD cards are not supported for Switch 2 game storage; they can be used to view screenshots and videos captured on the original system.

Does Switch 2 support 4K?

Yes, when connected to a TV through the Switch 2 Dock. Nintendo specifies output of up to 4K, with a maximum of 60 frames per second at that resolution. Both the game and TV must support 4K, so the specification does not mean that every game renders at 4K or that the console outputs 4K at 120 fps. Nintendo’s announcement gives the 4K and 60 fps qualification.

The 120 fps figure applies to the built-in screen’s capability, not the 4K TV mode. A game must support the relevant resolution or frame rate to use it; the hardware specification alone does not guarantee a particular game’s settings or performance.

How is the handheld screen different?

Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch high-definition LCD with HDR support and a refresh-rate capability of up to 120 fps, according to Nintendo UK’s feature page. Nintendo does not describe it as a 4K panel. In handheld mode, you are looking at the built-in display; 4K is a docked TV-output option.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

The console retains TV, tabletop and handheld play. The larger screen and higher refresh-rate capability are hardware specifications; the experience in a given game depends on that title’s support.

What changes in storage and performance?

More built-in storage, with a new expansion-card standard

Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2. In its 2025 launch announcement, the company said that is eight times the storage capacity of Nintendo Switch models other than Nintendo Switch – OLED Model. This is a capacity comparison, not a claim about loading speed.

For additional system storage, Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card. An ordinary microSD card cannot be used to expand game storage on the new system. Nintendo says a regular microSD card can still be used to view screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch. When buying an expansion card, check that the product is specifically microSD Express rather than a generic microSD card. Nintendo’s Switch 2 page and support guidance describe the card requirement.

  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

Improved hardware, but game-specific results

Nintendo describes Switch 2 as having improved processing and graphics performance. Compatible games may have sharper visuals, smoother frame rates or faster loading, but the improvement depends on the game. Some older games also offer free updates or paid upgrades for Switch 2; neither a universal performance boost nor a single multiplier is established.

Can you play original Switch games and use old accessories?

Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a particular game; for third-party titles, Nintendo advises checking with the publisher. Some games have Switch 2-specific updates or upgrades, which may be free or paid.

Some existing controllers and accessories carry over, but compatibility is not universal:

  • The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
  • The original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but it cannot power the console in TV mode through the Switch 2 Dock because the power output differs.
  • The original HDMI cable is identified as incompatible in Nintendo’s accessory guidance.

Confirm an accessory’s specific compatibility before relying on it; the fact that an original controller can pair does not mean the original dock or every accessory works with the new console. Nintendo’s support compatibility information covers games and accessories.

What do GameChat and GameShare add?

Switch 2 introduces GameChat for online communication and GameShare, which lets a Switch 2 owner temporarily share supported games with other players subject to Nintendo’s conditions. GameChat can use a separately sold Switch 2 camera or a compatible USB-C camera for video chat; a camera is not included by implication in the console’s display or 4K specifications.

Nintendo UK says online use of GameChat requires a Nintendo Account, an internet connection and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, as well as additional registration and parental-control conditions. Requirements may differ by region, so check the applicable Nintendo service information where you live. Nintendo UK’s feature page describes the feature and its stated requirements.

Other notable changes

Nintendo lists accessibility options including display font and color-tone adjustment, text verbalization and button customization. The original system’s three play styles—TV, tabletop and handheld—remain part of the Switch 2 experience, while the new hardware adds the display, storage and communication changes described above.
