What was Brothership, the opening game?
Nintendo introduced Mario & Luigi: Brothership as a new entry in the brothers’ RPG series. Mario and Luigi set out from Shipshape Island to explore the islands of Concordia, encountering familiar characters including Peach and Bowser. Nintendo summed up the premise in its June 18 announcement: “All aboard for an island-hopping RPG adventure starring Mario and Luigi!”

The adventure combines exploration with turn-based battles. Bros. Moves help the brothers overcome obstacles, while Bros. Attacks add coordinated moves to combat. Nintendo announced the game for Nintendo Switch on November 7, 2024. That date is the release date stated in the 2024 announcement, not a statement about its present availability. Nintendo’s announcement provides the game details.

How to read the Direct’s lineup
The show was not limited to one kind of release. Its announcements included new entries, remakes and remasters, collections, multiplayer games, an update to an existing sports game, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack content, and a themed Switch Lite. The lineup mixed Nintendo franchises with partner-published games, so the chapter sequence is a useful guide to what appeared, but not a measure of importance or playtime.
