Nintendo Music works in a mobile app on compatible iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, and it also has a computer web-browser experience. You can download tracks for offline listening in the mobile app, while computer listening is primarily online. A Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership are required, but you do not need to own a Nintendo Switch console.
The practical decision is therefore straightforward: use the mobile app if you need downloads, use the browser when you want a larger-screen listening and playlist-management option, and verify your device, membership, and country availability before relying on the service.

Nintendo Music supports recent iPhone and iPad software, Android 9 or newer under specific hardware and installation conditions, and a computer web browser. Nintendo also lists compatible smartphones, tablets, computers, and in-car interfaces as access routes, although functionality is not guaranteed on every device that meets the stated minimums.
iPhone and iPad requirements
On Apple mobile hardware, the app requires iOS 16 or later on iPhone and iPadOS 16 or later on iPad. A device running an earlier Apple operating-system version falls outside Nintendo’s listed support range, even if the hardware itself is otherwise capable.

Android requirements and exclusions
Android 9 or later is required. Nintendo excludes Android devices with 2 GB of RAM or less, so checking the phone or tablet’s memory is as important as checking its Android version.
Nintendo also says it does not support installations made outside the Google Play Store. An Android phone can meet the version and memory requirements and still be outside supported use if the app was sideloaded from another source. Nintendo cautions that functionality is not guaranteed on every device meeting the published requirements, which is relevant to older, heavily customized, or unusual Android hardware.

Nintendo provides a computer web-browser experience for listening, browsing the catalog, and organizing playlists. This is a separate access mode from the mobile app: it lets you use a computer without installing a phone app, but it is not the route to the mobile download feature described for offline listening.
CarPlay and Android Auto
Nintendo lists Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for listening and playlist control. The Google Play listing also identifies Android Auto support, so a compatible phone and vehicle interface can provide a dashboard-friendly way to use the service without handling the phone while driving.
Do I need a Nintendo Switch to use Nintendo Music?
No. Nintendo’s FAQ says a Nintendo Switch system is not required. You need a Nintendo Account and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, then you can use the service on a compatible smart device or through a computer browser.

What the membership requirement means
Nintendo’s service notice states: “Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and Nintendo Account required.” The membership is the access condition for Nintendo Music; owning Nintendo hardware is not a separate prerequisite.

If you already have a Nintendo Account, use that account when signing in so the membership can be recognized. If you do not have one, create the account before attempting to activate the service. The app and browser route do not replace the account requirement.
Does a Family Membership work?
Yes. Nintendo says a Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership covers everyone on that membership. Each person should use their own Nintendo Account that is included in the family group rather than assuming that one account’s sign-in automatically applies to every user.
Can I try it without paying immediately?
Nintendo advertises a seven-day Nintendo Switch Online free trial for trying Nintendo Music where that trial is available. Trial availability and terms can vary by country, and Nintendo states that the service itself is not available in all countries. Check the offer shown for your account and region before planning around a trial.
Can I listen to Nintendo Music offline?
Yes, but offline playback is a mobile-app feature. While connected to the internet, download the tracks you want in the app; after the download completes, those tracks can be played without a live connection. Nintendo’s service description explicitly says users can “Stream or download tracks for offline listening.”

How to prepare downloads
- Open the Nintendo Music mobile app while your phone or tablet has an internet connection.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account attached to your Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Find the album, playlist, or individual tracks you plan to hear.
- Use the app’s download control and wait for the downloads to finish before disconnecting.
- Test playback with connectivity temporarily disabled, or in another safe way before leaving coverage, to confirm that the files are available on the device.
Saving a song to a playlist is not the same as downloading it. A playlist organizes music for later access, but each track must complete the app’s download process if you want it available without internet service.
How long do downloads remain available?
Offline access is not indefinite. Nintendo Support says downloaded tracks can expire when the listener remains offline for an extended period. The app must reconnect to refresh access, so an offline library should be treated as renewable access rather than a permanent copy of the music.
What should I do before a flight or long trip?
Reconnect shortly before departure, open the app, and leave it running long enough for the downloads to refresh. This is especially important if the device has been offline for days or if you have not opened the app recently. Confirm that the intended tracks play before switching to airplane mode or entering an area without coverage.
What is the difference between the mobile app and the computer browser?
The two routes share the same account and Nintendo Switch Online conditions, but they suit different listening situations. The mobile app is the route for local downloads; the browser is the convenient computer-based route for online listening and playlist organization.

Choose the app when commuting, traveling, or driving with a supported in-car interface. Choose the browser when you are at a desk and want to browse or arrange playlists on a larger screen without using a phone.

How do I set up Nintendo Music on a phone or tablet?
Setup is mostly a compatibility and account check followed by an in-app download decision. Use the official mobile-store listing for your platform rather than an Android installation package from an outside site.
- Confirm the platform. Check that an iPhone or iPad is on iOS 16 or iPadOS 16, or that an Android device is on Android 9 or later with more than 2 GB of RAM.
- Install through the supported store. Use the Apple App Store on Apple hardware or Google Play on Android. Nintendo does not support Android installations outside Google Play.
- Sign in. Launch the app and use the Nintendo Account associated with the required Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Allow the initial connection. Keep the device online while the app verifies access and loads the available service content.
- Download selectively. If you need offline playback, start downloads while online and wait for completion instead of relying only on playlist saves.
- Refresh before extended offline use. Open the app online before a trip or other long period without coverage so expiring downloads can renew.
Which setup is best for different listening situations?
There is no separate console-based setup to choose. The useful choice is between a mobile device for portability and downloads, a computer for browser access, and a phone connected to a supported vehicle interface.

What can prevent Nintendo Music from working even when a device looks compatible?
Meeting a single requirement does not establish full support. The main failure points are an old operating-system version, insufficient Android memory, an unsupported installation method, a country where the service is unavailable, or a device-specific compatibility problem.

Start by reconnecting the same mobile device to the internet and opening Nintendo Music. Nintendo’s support guidance for expired downloads is to launch the app while connected and leave it running so the downloads can refresh.

If the problem continues, verify that the tracks were actually downloaded rather than merely added to a playlist, and check whether the device still meets the platform requirements. Is Nintendo Music a good fit if I do not own Nintendo hardware?
