Starting in May 2026, Nintendo will set different suggested prices for qualifying new digital and physical games: Nintendo-published titles exclusive to Switch 2. The first named example, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, is listed at $59.99 digitally and reported at $69.99 physically in the U.S.—a $10 difference. That gap applies to this game, not necessarily every covered release.
Which Switch 2 games are covered?
Nintendo’s pricing distinction applies to new digital games that Nintendo publishes and that are exclusive to Switch 2. It should not be assumed to cover third-party games, titles already on sale, or every game available for the system. Nintendo’s U.S. policy says the change begins in May 2026 with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Nintendo’s U.S. policy page describes the scope and start date.

Nintendo Australia has published a matching policy statement, using “SRP” (suggested retail price) rather than the U.S. term “MSRP.” The available regional statements do not establish a complete country-by-country price list or a uniform worldwide discount. Nintendo Australia’s policy page provides its regional wording.
What does the first example cost?
For the U.S. release of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Game Informer reported an MSRP of $59.99 for digital and $69.99 for physical. That is a $10 difference between the reported suggested prices; Nintendo’s U.S. store search listing also showed the digital game at $59.99. Game Informer’s report gives the comparison, and Nintendo’s U.S. store listing supports the digital price.

This is a title-specific U.S. example, not evidence that every new game will have a $10 format gap. Nintendo says pricing may vary by title, so check the actual digital and physical prices in your region before deciding.
Why does Nintendo give digital games a different suggested price?
Nintendo says packaged and digital games offer the same experience, and that the separate prices reflect different costs of producing and distributing each format. That is Nintendo’s stated rationale, not an independently verified breakdown of its costs. The company’s explanation appears on its U.S. policy page.

Will digital always be cheaper at checkout?
No. Nintendo says retail partners set their own prices for both physical and digital games, and that prices vary by title. The $59.99 and $69.99 figures for Yoshi are reported MSRPs; a retailer may discount the physical edition enough to make it cheaper than the digital option. Compare current offers rather than relying on the suggested-price gap. Nintendo’s policy statement on retailer pricing is on its U.S. support page.

How to compare the two formats
- Check eligibility: Confirm that the game is a new Nintendo-published title exclusive to Switch 2 before applying the policy.
- Compare like with like: Look at the digital and physical prices for the same game in your region, including retailer discounts.
- Separate MSRP from the deal price: Nintendo’s format distinction concerns suggested pricing; a retailer’s current price can differ.
- Choose based on what matters to you: Nintendo says gameplay is the same in packaged and digital formats. The cited policy does not establish other differences, such as resale, lending, storage, or access terms.
