Not necessarily. Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, but that date did not trigger a single worldwide cutoff for 3DS and 2DS repairs. Support depends on your exact model and country. In the United States and Canada, Nintendo of America currently lists only the New Nintendo 2DS XL for service; in Japan, repair acceptance for the New Nintendo 2DS LL ended on September 4, 2025. And Switch 2 is not a replacement for playing your 3DS or 2DS games.
Does Nintendo still repair 3DS and 2DS systems?
Sometimes, depending on the model and region. Nintendo of America’s current support page says the New Nintendo 2DS XL is the only Nintendo 3DS-family system it services. The listed eligible systems have serial numbers beginning “NW.” Nintendo lists these models as no longer serviced:

Nintendo’s service-request guidance covers online requests for the United States and Canada and authorized service centers in Latin America.
Japan has a separate repair timeline
Nintendo Support Japan says repair acceptance for the New Nintendo 2DS LL ended on September 4, 2025, because the parts needed for repairs had run out. A separate notice says New Nintendo 3DS service had ended on August 28, 2024, and that repair acceptance for New Nintendo 3DS LL and Nintendo 2DS ended after parts were exhausted. Did Switch 2 cause 3DS and 2DS repairs to end?
No evidence here establishes that Switch 2’s launch caused a universal repair cutoff. Nintendo announced Switch 2 for release on June 5, 2025, while the repair notices describe separate model, regional, and parts-stock decisions. The practical change is that official repair access has narrowed over time, with availability determined by the console and country—not simply by the arrival of a new system. Can Switch 2 play your 3DS or 2DS games?
Do not buy Switch 2 expecting to continue a 3DS or 2DS library on it. Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, while noting that some Switch titles may not be fully compatible. Its guidance does not provide a way to play 3DS or 2DS software on Switch 2.
Nintendo also says 3DS and Wii U eShop purchases do not carry over to Nintendo Switch, which is not backward compatible with software made for those older systems. The cited guidance does not establish a transfer route for that library to Switch 2. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information and its older-console transfer guidance.
What Switch 2 Edition upgrades do

Should you repair, replace, or upgrade?
Start with the model and the games you want to play. A newer console makes sense if your goal is access to compatible Switch software and new Switch 2 games. If you want to keep playing a particular 3DS or 2DS game, retain access to a working 3DS-family system; Switch 2 is not shown as a substitute.
