Nintendo added Handheld Mode Boost in Nintendo Switch 2 system software version 22.0.0, released March 16, 2026. Turn it on to run compatible original Nintendo Switch games while undocked as if they were being played in TV mode. It is a built-in setting—not a separate accessory—and Nintendo does not promise a universal increase in resolution or frame rate.

What Handheld Mode Boost does

Nintendo describes the feature as making Nintendo Switch software run in TV mode while the Switch 2 is undocked. The setting applies to original Switch software only; it does not affect Nintendo Switch 2 games. Its impact depends on the game, and Nintendo notes that some software is unaffected. The description does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, or improvement for any specific title. Nintendo’s feature instructions explain the behavior; the version 22.0.0 update history records its addition on March 16, 2026.

How to turn it on or off

  1. On Nintendo Switch 2, open System Settings → System → Nintendo Switch Software Handling → Handheld Mode Boost.
  2. Switch Handheld Mode Boost on or off.
  3. To control it from Quick Settings, first enable Enable/Disable Handheld Mode Boost from Quick Settings in the feature settings. You can then use the Quick Settings toggle.

Tradeoffs to consider

Because the mode makes original Switch software operate as if it were in TV mode, parts of a game designed around handheld use may behave differently. Nintendo flags these possible issues:

  • Power use: System power consumption may increase.
  • Touch input: A game may not be able to use the system’s touch screen.
  • Attached controllers: Attached Joy-Con 2 controllers are treated as a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. Detach them before using other controllers.
  • Game instructions and functions: Some on-screen instructions may be incorrect, or some functions may not work properly.

Check game compatibility separately

Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but backward compatibility is not universal: Nintendo says some software may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Boost mode does not change that. Check the individual game’s compatibility information before relying on it, and check whether its publisher offers a separate Switch 2 update or upgrade. Nintendo notes that some games have free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance; those are distinct from Handheld Mode Boost. Nintendo’s compatibility information covers original Switch software on Switch 2.

Is there a separate boost device?

No. Handheld Mode Boost is a setting in Switch 2 system software, so there is no separate boost accessory to buy. The feature requires a Nintendo Switch 2 console; original Switch games still need to be compatible with that system.
