Yes—but only some original Nintendo Switch accessories work with Switch 2, and “compatible” can mean very different things. Original Joy-Con and the original Switch Pro Controller pair wirelessly, but original Joy-Con cannot attach to or charge on the Switch 2 console. The original Switch dock is incompatible, while its AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly but cannot provide TV mode. Ordinary, non-Express microSD cards can show old screenshots and videos but cannot store Switch 2 games. The practical way to judge an accessory is to separate wireless pairing, physical fit, charging, TV output, storage and game-specific support.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
Original Joy-Con Extra wireless players and games that require original Joy-Con hardware Pairs wirelessly; cannot attach to or charge on Switch 2 Switch 2 with original Joy-Con; original Switch for charging Oct 2026
Original Switch Pro Controller Players who already own the older Pro Controller Wireless pairing; charges from a Switch 2 dock USB port Switch 2 and original Switch Oct 2026
Original Switch dock None on Switch 2 Not compatible Original Switch only Oct 2026
Original Switch AC adapter Direct console charging Charges Switch 2 directly; insufficient for TV mode Switch 2 console charging Oct 2026
Original Switch HDMI cable None as a documented Switch 2 replacement Nintendo labels the included cable incompatible Original Switch accessory; use the Switch 2 cable for its dock Oct 2026
Non-Express microSD card Reading original screenshots and videos Cannot save or load Switch 2 games Switch 2 media access only Oct 2026
GameCube Controller Adapter Existing wired GameCube controllers in TV mode Works through a Switch 2 dock USB port Switch 2 TV mode Oct 2026

Nintendo’s US FAQ describes this as support for “select” original accessories, not a blanket guarantee. The official compatibility guidance is the safest reference for an accessory whose function depends on power, charging or a particular game: Nintendo’s accessory compatibility table.

Can I use original Joy-Con with Switch 2?

Yes, original Joy-Con can be paired wirelessly with Switch 2, but they are not a physical replacement for Joy-Con 2. They cannot slide onto the Switch 2 console, and the console cannot charge them.

Pairing and everyday use

Use the Switch 2 controller-pairing process to connect the original Joy-Con wirelessly. Once paired, they are useful as additional controllers for multiplayer games and for software that specifically needs original Joy-Con features. Because they do not attach to the console, they are most practical when Switch 2 is being used on a table or television.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Charging original Joy-Con

Keep an original Switch available for charging, or use an accessory designed for original Joy-Con, such as a compatible charging grip or the Joy-Con Charging Stand (Two-Way). A Joy-Con 2 charging accessory is not a substitute: the two controller generations have different physical connectors and shapes.

The wake-up limitation

Nintendo UK states that the HOME Button on original Switch Joy-Con and original Switch controllers cannot wake a sleeping Switch 2. That limitation is specifically documented in Nintendo’s UK guidance; the US compatibility table does not spell it out. Expect to wake the console using its power button or an already supported method rather than relying on an old controller’s HOME button. See Nintendo UK’s compatibility page.

Does the original Switch Pro Controller work?

It does. The original Switch Pro Controller pairs wirelessly with Switch 2 and can be charged by connecting a USB cable to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock. For someone satisfied with that controller’s layout, buying the newer Switch 2 Pro Controller is optional rather than required.

The newer controller adds features Nintendo lists for Switch 2, including a C Button, remappable GL and GR buttons, and an audio jack. Those are feature differences, not a statement that the original Pro Controller stops working. The original model remains the practical choice for an existing second controller; details are in Nintendo’s support table and the Switch 2 FAQ.

Which other original Nintendo controllers are supported?

Nintendo lists several older wireless controllers as compatible for appropriate games, but “compatible” does not mean every button layout suits every title.

NES controllers

Original NES controllers can connect wirelessly. Nintendo says they need an original Switch or a compatible original-Joy-Con charging accessory for charging, so plan the charging arrangement before storing the old console away.

SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers

Nintendo lists original SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers as wirelessly compatible. The company says these can charge by USB through the Switch 2 dock. Their specialty layouts remain best suited to games designed around those layouts; wireless pairing alone does not make them universal replacements.

GameCube controllers

The existing GameCube Controller Adapter works through a USB port on the Switch 2 dock in TV mode. Nintendo’s US FAQ confirms that previously released GameCube controllers can be used with that adapter. This is a wired, dock-based setup, not a way to connect the controller directly to the handheld console. See Nintendo’s FAQ.

Will the original Switch dock work with Switch 2?

No. Nintendo explicitly states, “The Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” The original dock should not be treated as a spare TV station, even though the consoles use related USB-C hardware.

Switch 2 includes its own dock. Nintendo’s separate Switch 2 Dock Set is intended as a replacement or a second-TV setup and includes the newer dock, its AC adapter, a USB-C charging cable and an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. Buying that set makes sense only when you need another complete dock location or a replacement; it is not necessary for a console that already includes a dock. Product contents and compatibility are listed by Nintendo at the official accessory page.

Can I reuse the original power adapter or HDMI cable?

AC adapter: charging yes, TV mode no

The original Switch AC adapter is a limited exception. Connected directly to the Switch 2 console, it can charge the system. Nintendo says its output is insufficient for Switch 2 TV mode, so it should not be used as the dock’s TV-mode power solution. Use the official Switch 2 AC adapter with the Switch 2 dock; Nintendo lists it as a replacement adapter for the console or dock.

HDMI cable: use the one supplied with Switch 2

Nintendo labels the HDMI cable included with the original Switch incompatible because the cable standards differ, and recommends the cable included with Switch 2. That does not establish that every separately purchased HDMI cable is unusable; it means the old, bundled Switch cable is not the documented cable to carry forward. The safest setup is the Switch 2 dock, its AC adapter and its included Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.

Can I reuse my old microSD card?

Only for limited media access. Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards for expandable game storage; Nintendo states, “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” Express cards up to 2 TB are supported, and an internet system update is required the first time an Express card is used. Nintendo’s storage guidance is at this support page.

What a normal microSD card can still do

A non-Express card from the original console can be read for original-Switch screenshots and videos. It cannot save or load Switch 2 games, so inserting the old card does not turn it into usable game expansion storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to look for when buying storage

Check for the words “microSD Express,” not merely “microSD” or a matching physical capacity. Nintendo’s US accessory catalog identifies a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card, while the technical limit is up to 2 TB. Capacity and branding do not override the Express requirement.

Do original Joy-Con grips, straps and game accessories fit?

Original Joy-Con attachments remain accessories for original Joy-Con; they do not fit Joy-Con 2. That includes original straps, grips, charging grips, wheels, Ring-Con, the leg strap and original-Joy-Con battery packs. Nintendo also lists the original adjustable charging stand as incompatible with Switch 2-era charging needs.

Attachments that still have a purpose

You can still pair original Joy-Con with Ring-Con for Ring Fit Adventure and use the original Joy-Con with the leg strap for supported Nintendo Switch Sports play. The value is therefore game-specific: the attachment is useful when the game expects an original Joy-Con, not because it physically fits the new console.

Nintendo UK additionally lists the original Switch stylus as compatible. That regional listing is useful for the stylus specifically, but it should not be generalized to every old accessory.

Which games still need original Switch hardware?

Some games depend on sensors, an infrared camera, controller geometry or a physical accessory that Switch 2 cannot reproduce. Nintendo’s compatibility guide names several notable cases:

  • Ring Fit Adventure, when using Ring-Con and its original Joy-Con arrangement.
  • Infrared-camera-dependent portions of 1-2-Switch.
  • Game Builder Garage and WarioWare: Move It!, where original Joy-Con hardware can be required for particular interactions.
  • The Soccer Shoot-Out activity in Nintendo Switch Sports, which uses the original Joy-Con leg-strap setup.
  • Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, because the Switch 2 console does not fit the VR goggles. Nintendo also notes partial physical-fit limitations for some other Labo kits.

These examples show why a reusable controller and a reusable game accessory are separate questions. An original Joy-Con may pair successfully while a cardboard Toy-Con or console-sized insert still cannot physically accommodate Switch 2.

Nintendo’s general compatibility overview says its information is current as of June 5, 2025 and directs readers to individual game pages or the Nintendo eShop for the latest title-specific status. Treat that date as the age of the overview, not as an October 2026 verification of every listed game. Check the individual title before buying or discarding hardware at Nintendo’s game-compatibility guide.

Can Switch 2 controllers be used on the original Switch?

No, compatibility is not automatically two-way. Nintendo’s US FAQ says Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with the original Switch. A working old controller on Switch 2 therefore does not imply that a new controller works in the opposite direction.

What should I keep, replace or buy?

Use this decision sequence before spending money:

  1. Keep original Joy-Con if you play titles that require their sensors, infrared camera or physical attachments, or if you need extra wireless players. Arrange a separate charging method.
  2. Keep the original Pro Controller if its controls meet your needs. Replace it only for Switch 2-specific features such as the C Button, GL/GR remapping or an audio jack.
  3. Do not plan around the original dock. Use the included Switch 2 dock, or buy a Switch 2 Dock Set only for a replacement or second TV.
  4. Reuse the old AC adapter only for direct charging. Use a Switch 2 adapter for docked TV play.
  5. Move to microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage. Keep a standard card if you need to read old screenshots or videos.
  6. Retain original attachments selectively. Ring-Con, the leg strap and certain specialty accessories can remain valuable for named games, even though they do not fit Joy-Con 2.
  7. Check each game before relying on an accessory. Physical game-card fit does not guarantee that the software, sensors or accessory behavior is supported.

What should I check when an old accessory seems not to work?

  • Controller does not appear: confirm it is an original Switch controller, charge it with the appropriate old-console or original-Joy-Con charger, then repeat wireless pairing.
  • Joy-Con will not slide onto Switch 2: that is an expected physical limitation, not a pairing fault. Use it wirelessly.
  • Joy-Con will not charge on the console: use an original Switch or an original-Joy-Con charging accessory.
  • TV output fails with the old dock: switch to the Switch 2 dock; Nintendo marks the old dock incompatible.
  • TV mode fails with the old AC adapter: use the Switch 2 adapter, because the old adapter can charge directly but lacks the stated TV-mode output.
  • A microSD card is rejected for game storage: replace the ordinary card with a microSD Express card and complete the required internet system update.
  • A game behaves differently: consult the individual title’s Nintendo page or eShop listing, especially for infrared-camera, Ring-Con, leg-strap, Labo or other motion-dependent features.

What is the practical verdict?

Switch 2 preserves useful parts of an original Switch collection, especially wireless controllers, the original Pro Controller, selected specialty controllers and the GameCube adapter. It does not preserve the original dock, console-mounted Joy-Con charging, the old bundled HDMI cable, or ordinary microSD game storage. Keep original hardware for the games and controller layouts that need it, but plan on the Switch 2 dock, power setup and microSD Express standard for the system’s core functions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Switch 2 come with a dock, or do I need to buy one?

A standard Switch 2 package includes its own dock. Nintendo’s separate Switch 2 Dock Set is for replacing that dock or adding a second TV location, not a mandatory upgrade for every owner.

Can I move my old screenshots and videos to Switch 2?

Nintendo allows a non-Express microSD card to be read for original-Switch screenshots and videos. That media exception does not allow the same card to hold Switch 2 game data.

How do I verify whether one specific Switch game needs original Joy-Con?

Use the individual game page or Nintendo eShop listing rather than relying only on the general compatibility overview. Nintendo dates that overview to June 5, 2025, so title-level information is the better check for current status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an old carrying case fit Switch 2?

Case compatibility depends on the case’s internal dimensions and protection around the larger or differently shaped console and dock accessories. The controller and dock rules do not by themselves establish that every old case fails or fits, so check the case maker’s measured fit.
