It was a fan-made 3D mock-up by Reddit user jard_dog, assembled from contemporary leaks and rumors. In retrospect, it was an unusually close broad-strokes prediction: the larger body, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, C Button, revised stand, and hybrid format all appeared in the released console. But its colors, exact proportions, interface concepts, and other details were artistic interpretation—not proof of access to final hardware.
What the “best look yet” actually was
The original article used “best look yet” as editorial shorthand for the concept’s completeness and visual quality. It did not mean Nintendo had authorized the renders or that they showed a production unit.

The images combined several rumored design clues into one coherent model. BGR credited the console concept to jard_dog and separately credited a user-interface concept to okomarok ZERO. That distinction matters: a fan reconstruction can bring together credible reports, guesses, and original design choices without every visible detail being supported by evidence.

The concept showed a larger Switch-style tablet, detachable controllers with magnetic-looking attachment points, a mysterious C Button on the right controller, a minimalist kickstand, and a black-and-white color scheme with blue and orange accents. The accompanying UI artwork imagined a refreshed version of the original Switch HOME Menu, including larger artwork when hovering over a game.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
At the time, reports also speculated about an announcement as early as January 2025 and a possible March launch. Those were historical rumors, not confirmed plans. Nintendo Switch 2 ultimately launched on June 5, 2025.
Concept detail versus confirmed Switch 2 feature
| Concept detail | Status in December 2024 | Status after launch | Accuracy assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Larger screen and body | Rumored and depicted in the render | Nintendo confirmed a 7.9-inch, 1080p display | Directionally accurate. The render did not establish the exact size, resolution, panel, or proportions. |
| Magnetic Joy-Con | Rumored and shown visually | Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically | Accurate. |
| C Button | Mysterious rumored control | The C Button starts GameChat from the right Joy-Con 2 | Accurate in function and placement. |
| Redesigned kickstand | Based on reported design clues | Switch 2 has a revised rear stand | Broadly accurate. The available evidence does not prove that the render reproduced the final mechanism or durability. |
| Black-and-white shell with blue and orange accents | Artist’s proposed colorway | Not evidence of Nintendo’s final design specifications | Artistic interpretation. |
| Updated HOME Menu | Separate fan UI concept | The released interface retains familiar Switch functions and adds Switch 2 features | Not an official software preview. |
| March 2025 launch | Contemporary speculation | Switch 2 launched June 5, 2025 | Incorrect. |
What the concept got right
Magnetic controllers
The most obvious hardware hit was the controller connection. Nintendo’s official Switch 2 information confirms that Joy-Con 2 controllers use magnetic connectors. The render therefore captured more than the general idea of detachable controllers; it anticipated a meaningful change to how they attach to the tablet.
The C Button and GameChat
The C Button was one of the concept’s most conspicuous unknowns. Nintendo later confirmed that pressing the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2 starts GameChat, a Switch 2 communication feature integrated with Nintendo’s account and online services. That makes the render’s button placement look remarkably prescient, although the concept itself did not prove what the button would do.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
GameChat is not simply a generic voice-chat application. Online use is subject to Nintendo Account, internet, Nintendo Switch Online, regional, and parental-supervision requirements. Nintendo says users under 16 require parental supervision, and video chat requires a compatible USB-C camera sold separately. The company’s temporary no-membership access period ended March 31, 2026, so readers should not treat GameChat as permanently free without Nintendo Switch Online.
A larger handheld display
The concept correctly anticipated a larger-looking central screen. The final system has a 7.9-inch 1080p display. That confirms the overall visual direction, but not every measurement visible in the artwork: a render cannot establish bezel thickness, panel technology, brightness, battery behavior, or exact shell dimensions.
The hybrid form factor
The concept retained the original Switch proposition: a tablet-like console that works in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. Switch 2 kept that identity rather than moving toward a conventional fixed home console or a permanently attached handheld design.

- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
The revised stand
The concept showed a cleaner, more substantial-looking kickstand, based in part on a design detail circulating in earlier reports. The released hardware also has a redesigned stand, so the broad prediction was right. It would be excessive to claim the render accurately predicted the final engineering, hinge behavior, or durability without direct evidence.
What remains unconfirmed or purely artistic
Several details in the render should not be used as specifications:
- Exact shell proportions and dimensions.
- Color choices and decorative blue or orange accents.
- Precise button spacing beyond controls later confirmed by Nintendo.
- Internal hardware, performance, cooling, battery life, and weight.
- Durability, port layout, dock design, or display technology unless supported by official documentation.
- Pricing and launch timing mentioned in pre-release rumors.
The central mistake to avoid is treating a complete-looking image as a complete set of evidence. The artist may have correctly identified a design direction while still inventing the details that make the model look finished.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
How close was the fan UI concept?
The separate UI artwork reportedly stayed close to the original Switch interface while imagining larger game artwork and refreshed icons. That was a plausible design exercise, but it should not be described as a Nintendo software leak.
Nintendo’s actual Switch 2 HOME Menu documentation describes familiar functions alongside Switch 2 features such as GameChat, GameShare, Virtual Game Cards, Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo eShop, Album, Controllers, and System Settings. Without a documented side-by-side match, the fan interface cannot be credited with predicting the final software design.
What the real Switch 2 added beyond the render
The released console made several important facts available that no leak-based render could establish. Nintendo confirms that each Joy-Con 2 can function as a mouse in compatible games. The system also supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, although Nintendo warns that some titles are unsupported or not fully compatible. “Backward compatible” should therefore not be read as “every Switch game works perfectly.” Nintendo maintains current compatibility guidance and issue lists for affected titles.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Storage is another area where old assumptions can mislead buyers. Nintendo’s system-update history states that system version 20.1.0 is required for Switch 2 game-key cards and microSD Express cards. Owners should not assume that every ordinary microSD card used with the original Switch is interchangeable with the new system; the relevant card and software requirements should be checked before buying.
Nintendo’s retrieved support information lists system version 22.1.0, released April 6, 2026, as the latest update shown there. System software, compatibility details, and online-service terms can change, so official support pages are more reliable than a pre-release concept article for current ownership questions.
How to evaluate any alleged Switch 2 “leak”
- Separate the image from its source. A visible feature proves only that an artist included it.
- Identify whether it was attributed to a leak. A reported rumor is still not confirmation.
- Look for Nintendo confirmation. Official product pages, support documents, or announcements are the appropriate basis for calling a feature real.
- Distinguish directional accuracy from exact accuracy. “Larger screen” can be correct even if a render gets the screen size, bezels, colors, and proportions wrong.
That framework also prevents a practical mistake: old concept images should not be used to authenticate a used console, identify a legitimate listing, or decide whether a newly circulated photograph is genuine.

Switch 2 is no longer a rumor. It launched on June 5, 2025, with a 7.9-inch 1080p display, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, mouse functionality in compatible games, and support for handheld, tabletop, and TV play. It also offers GameChat and GameShare, alongside compatibility with many Nintendo Switch games subject to Nintendo’s documented exceptions.
For current buying decisions, use Nintendo’s official store and current support pages rather than the 2024 concept. A compatible USB-C camera is sold separately for GameChat video, and online requirements apply under Nintendo’s current terms. Likewise, check current microSD Express requirements instead of assuming original Switch storage accessories will work.
Verdict
The concept was a strong visual composite that got several headline ideas right: the larger form, magnetic Joy-Con 2 attachment, C Button, revised stand, and continued hybrid design. But calling it the “real” Switch 2 would be misleading. Its value is historical—it shows how close an informed fan reconstruction came to Nintendo’s eventual hardware—while the released console, official documentation, and support pages remain the authority for exact specifications, compatibility, software, and online requirements.
