“The program can’t start because wsasimpl.dll is missing from your computer.” The wsasimpl.dll error usually means that an older application cannot find one of its own files, not that Windows has lost a required system DLL.
wsasimpl.dll is associated with a historical Winsock sample or third-party application. Its description is “Simple Interface abstracting WinSockets.” It should not be confused with Microsoft’s Ws2_32.dll, the Windows library used by the Winsock API.

What wsasimpl.dll is and is not
Historical Windows Sockets development material identifies WSASIMPL.DLL as a sample DLL over Winsock and TCP. It was used with sample programs and development files, including import libraries associated with different development targets.

That makes it an application or development-package file, not a normal Windows component. The exact modern program behind an error cannot be determined from the filename alone. A historical forum report also associated the file with older BusinessObjects installations, but that report is not official product documentation and does not establish a universal dependency.
Some file-index pages label the publisher as PRIVAT, while other third-party pages report conflicting versions, sizes, and architectures. Those details are not authoritative enough to use when choosing a replacement. The important fact is that the original application that installed the file is the correct source.
Do not confuse it with Ws2_32.dll. Microsoft documents Ws2_32.dll as the system library for Winsock functions. Installing or replacing that Windows library is not the normal solution to a missing wsasimpl.dll message.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the file
The safest repair depends on the executable that displays the error.
If the error appears in a program window
Read the title bar and the full message. Note:
- The application name.
- The executable name, if shown.
- Whether the error appears during launch, when opening a feature, or when shutting down.
- The application’s installation folder.
If the program opens far enough to show menus, select its built-in help or About screen and record the product name and version. Do not rely on the DLL filename to identify the application.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Sort the list by name or installation date.
- Look for the program that was recently removed, updated, or stopped working.
- Select its three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, if available.
If the message appears before any visible program opens, continue with the startup checks below.
Check startup entries
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry associated with the error, an old application, or a folder that no longer exists.
- Right-click the entry and choose Open file location, if available.
- If the folder is missing or clearly belongs to software you removed, right-click the startup entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a stale startup entry does not repair the old application. It prevents Windows from trying to launch software that is no longer installed. If the program is still needed, reinstall it instead.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press the Windows key and type Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names match the affected application.
- Select a task and check the Actions tab.
- If it launches an executable from a deleted folder, right-click the task and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows and check whether the message returns.
Do not disable unrelated Microsoft tasks simply because their names are unfamiliar.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely fix.
Use the application’s repair option
Many installers provide a repair function:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Advanced options, depending on what Windows displays.
- Complete the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
If the application has its own launcher, look for options named Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or Check installation. Let the launcher restore the complete installation rather than copying only wsasimpl.dll.
A successful repair means the program starts without the missing-file message and can perform the action that previously failed. If the same message appears, continue with a full reinstall.
Reinstall from a trusted source
Use, in this order:
- The application’s original installer.
- The developer’s official download or support page.
- The original installation media.
- The official launcher used to install the program.
- Your organization’s known-good software repository, if this is a work application.
Before reinstalling, save the program’s documents and configuration files if they are stored outside the application folder.
Recommended Free Tools
Then:
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or locate the original installer.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator if the developer’s instructions require elevated installation.
- Install the program into its normal location.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the program from its Start menu shortcut.
Do not download a loose wsasimpl.dll file from a DLL index or “DLL fixer” page. A random copy can contain malware, belong to the wrong application, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. It can also hide the real problem until a later update or reinstall.
If the application is an old Winsock sample, restore the complete original sample or development archive. The package may require its executable, libraries, configuration files, and other supporting files together.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined an old application file.
Check Windows Security
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection associated with the affected application or its installation folder.
- Confirm the original path and detection details.
Only restore a file when all of the following are true:
Rank #2
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- You recognize the application.
- The file was installed from a trusted original source.
- The detected path matches that application’s folder.
- You have checked the installer or application with current security software.
If the file was quarantined, reinstall the complete application from its official source instead of restoring a loose DLL. Do not disable antivirus protection just to force wsasimpl.dll into a system directory.
If you believe the detection is incorrect, update Windows Security and scan the original installer before using it. A file being named wsasimpl.dll does not prove that it is safe.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Evidence about specific wsasimpl.dll builds is inconsistent. Some third-party metadata describes a 32-bit file, while other pages report an x64 build. These reports are not enough to select a replacement.
The matching architecture must come from the original application package.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer. That does not mean a random 64-bit or 32-bit DLL can be substituted. The DLL must match the executable and the application’s expected interface.
To identify an application’s executable:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Review the Target field.
- Select Open File Location, if available.
If it is an old 32-bit program, reinstall the original 32-bit application rather than placing a replacement in System32 or SysWOW64. Those folders are Windows-managed locations, not general storage for application DLLs.
Fix 5: Investigate a missing dependency
The message “Error loading wsasimpl.dll. The specified module could not be found” can be misleading. Windows may be unable to find wsasimpl.dll, or it may have found that file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Use the application’s own logs first:
- Open the program’s installation folder.
- Look for folders named Logs, Reports, Diagnostics, or Support.
- Open the newest log in Notepad.
- Search for
wsasimpl.dll,module,dependency, orload.
You can also check Windows event logs:
- Press the Windows key and type Event Viewer.
- Open Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log from the Actions pane.
- Check Error and Warning.
- Review entries recorded at the time of the failure.
The best repair remains reinstalling the complete parent application. Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET merely because the missing item has a .dll extension. No verified evidence connects those Microsoft packages specifically to wsasimpl.dll. Install a runtime only when the application’s official documentation or installer identifies it as required.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when multiple Windows components are damaged, Windows itself behaves abnormally, or the problem began after broader system corruption. It is not the primary fix for an application-local wsasimpl.dll.
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management first, followed by System File Checker. Both commands require an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft’s guidance for these commands is available in its System File Checker repair instructions.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the CBS log, restart, and repeat the repair only if Windows corruption is still suspected.
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They are not a confirmed source for this historical third-party or sample DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Fix 7: Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
Do not enable random Windows features to solve a missing application DLL. An old program may require a specific legacy component, but that requirement should come from its official documentation or installer.
If the documentation names a feature:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Locate the named feature.
- Select its checkbox.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application.
If the installer does not identify a required Windows feature, leave the feature list unchanged. Enabling unrelated legacy components does not replace wsasimpl.dll and can create additional compatibility or security concerns.
Fix 8: Check network drivers only for a separate networking failure
Because the file is associated with Winsock sample software, you may also see a network error after restoring the application. A network driver problem does not normally create wsasimpl.dll, so treat this as a separate check.

- If the adapter has an error icon, choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver from the computer manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart Windows.
Do not uninstall a working network adapter merely because the application reports wsasimpl.dll. If the adapter is functioning and the application still cannot start, return to repairing the parent program.
Driver versions can be difficult to match manually, especially on older hardware. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; the full version performs driver installation, but it will not replace the application-specific repair required for wsasimpl.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is mainly used for certain COM or ActiveX components.
There is no verified evidence that this old Winsock sample DLL is a COM component that needs registration. Running a command such as this is therefore not a general solution:
regsvr32 wsasimpl.dll
It can produce another error and distract from the real issue. Use regsvr32 only when the affected application’s official documentation explicitly instructs you to register that exact file.
Microsoft describes the command’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 documentation.
What to do if the error remains
Record these details before contacting the application developer or administrator:
- The full error message.
- The executable that displays it.
- The application’s installation path.
- Whether the application is still listed in Installed apps.
- Your Windows edition and system type.
- Whether the error occurs at startup or only during a particular task.
- Any Protection history detection and original file path.
- Relevant Event Viewer entries.
- Whether repair or reinstall changed the message.
If the program is no longer installed, remove its stale startup entry or scheduled task after confirming that no remaining software needs it. If the program is still required but cannot be reinstalled, restore it from a known-good backup or original installation media.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrevention
- Keep installers and recovery media for old applications.
- Use the application’s repair or file-verification feature before manual replacement.
- Keep important application folders out of improvised backup locations.
- Do not copy DLLs between unrelated programs.
- Do not place application DLLs in
System32orSysWOW64. - Check antivirus quarantine before restoring a deleted file.
- Keep old software updated when the developer still supports it.
- Remove obsolete startup entries when uninstalling legacy programs.
- Preserve the complete application package when migrating to a new Windows installation.
FAQ
Is wsasimpl.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. It is associated with historical Winsock sample or third-party application material.
What program uses wsasimpl.dll?
The clearest provenance is historical Winsock sample and development software. A forum report also mentioned older BusinessObjects versions, but that is anecdotal. The exact program must be identified from the error window, startup entry, executable path, or installation records.
Should I download wsasimpl.dll from a DLL website?
No. Random downloads can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, use an incompatible build, or leave the real application installation damaged. Restore the complete file set from the original application installer instead.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. This is an application-local file, not a verified Windows system component. Copying it into a system directory can create conflicts and make future troubleshooting harder.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will SFC restore wsasimpl.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It is appropriate for broader Windows corruption, but the parent application’s installer is the correct source for this DLL.
Is wsasimpl.dll the same as Ws2_32.dll?
No. Ws2_32.dll is Microsoft’s Windows Winsock library. wsasimpl.dll is a separate application or sample DLL.
Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found”?
The requested DLL may be missing, or Windows may be unable to load one of its dependencies. Repairing the complete parent application is safer than replacing only the named file.
Do I need to register wsasimpl.dll?
Not normally. Use regsvr32 only if the application’s official instructions specifically require registration. There is no verified evidence that this Winsock sample DLL needs it.
