Nintendo’s published specifications for the released console list TV-mode output up to 3840×2160 (4K) at 60 fps, with 4K support limited to supported games and a compatible TV.
What the development-kit report claimed
Insider Gaming reported on March 31, 2025, that Tom Henderson had heard from one developer at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, and separately by email, that “the dev kits, or some of the dev kits, don’t have a 4K output.” The developer was not named, and the report supplied no development-kit specifications or independent documentation. The wording matters: Henderson described some kits, not every Switch 2 development kit. The report also cautioned that development hardware may differ from the retail console, so the claim did not establish what the final system would support.
What the retail Switch 2 can output
Nintendo’s technical specifications list a maximum TV-mode video output of 3840×2160 (4K) at 60 fps. Nintendo says TV output runs through the dock and HDMI, and its FAQ qualifies 4K support as applying to supported games and a compatible television. The launch announcement also describes connecting the system to a TV through the dock.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
That settles the retail-console question at the level Nintendo specifies: Switch 2 can send a 4K signal to a TV in TV mode. The standard system includes a dock, so the claim does not mean owners generally need to buy another dock for 4K output.
4K output is not the same as native 4K rendering
Output resolution describes the signal sent to the television; it does not, by itself, say what resolution a game renders internally. Nintendo’s cited specifications establish the console’s maximum TV-mode output, not native 4K rendering across its game library. The cited sources do not provide game-by-game rendering measurements.

What remains unknown about the kits
The report does not identify the developer, the number of kits involved, or their revisions and configurations. Nintendo’s public specifications describe the retail system, not confidential development hardware. As a result, the reported limitation cannot be checked against particular kits from the information available in these sources.
