Nintendo Switch 2 Does What PlayStation Doesn’t: It Goes Handheld, Tabletop, and TV

Switch 2’s standout distinction is its handheld, tabletop, and TV play. Here’s how to use that difference when deciding between Nintendo and PlayStation.

Nintendo Switch 2’s clearest difference is how you can play it: handheld, tabletop, or on a TV. That flexibility may make it a better fit if you want one system for gaming at home and away from home. It does not make Nintendo a universal winner over PlayStation; your choice still depends on the games you want, where you play, how you use multiplayer, and the visual performance you expect.

This is a practical way to think about “Should I get a Switch 2 or a PS5?”—not a complete hardware or game-library shootout. Nintendo’s published specifications clarify what Switch 2 offers, but a like-for-like PlayStation comparison would require current, verified Sony specifications and game availability.

What Switch 2 does differently: three ways to play

Nintendo describes three play styles for Switch 2: TV, tabletop, and handheld. In TV mode, the console sits in its dock and the game displays on a television. In handheld mode, the Joy-Con 2 controllers attach to the console. Tabletop mode gives you another way to play without holding the system or using a TV. Nintendo’s feature page describes these modes.

That range is the practical distinction to weigh against a home-console-centered setup: do you want to take the same system from a television to a handheld session, or will you mostly play in one place? A PlayStation comparison should be based on the specific model and games you are considering, rather than assuming that either platform wins every category.

How to decide between Switch 2 and PlayStation

Start with the games you actually want

List the specific franchises and games you expect to play, then confirm that each is available on the platform you are considering. The sources here do not establish a current, complete comparison of Nintendo and PlayStation libraries or named exclusives, so don’t choose on an unverified claim that one system has the better lineup.

Match the system to where you play

If you value handheld sessions as well as TV play, Switch 2’s three modes are a concrete fit. If you primarily play on a TV, compare the games and performance you care about on the particular systems under consideration; the Switch 2 specifications below describe its capabilities, not how every game runs.

Consider multiplayer before you buy

Think about whether you mainly play locally with people in the same room or use online features. Nintendo says Switch 2 online features, including GameChat, require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Camera features require a compatible camera, sold separately; availability and terms can vary. Check Nintendo’s current feature information and service requirements before relying on a particular feature.

Set expectations for display and performance

Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD screen with Full HD (1080p) capability for handheld play. Nintendo lists TV output of up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, with 120 fps support at lower listed resolutions. These are manufacturer specifications for the 2025 product generation, not independent performance measurements or a promise that every game reaches those limits. Actual display features depend on supported software and compatible equipment.

Nintendo also lists HDR and VRR support, subject to software, display, and mode qualifications. The feature page says TV-mode VRR support was added in a system update released September 10, 2026. Check the current Nintendo feature page for compatibility details.

What to know if you already own Switch games or accessories

Older Switch games

Switch 2 plays physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some older titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Check the Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility information for the status of games you care about instead of assuming every title works exactly as it did on the original system.

The dock

The original Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2 for TV mode. You need the Switch 2 dock to display play on a television, according to Nintendo Support.

Storage expansion

Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage and microSD Express cards as the expandable-memory standard. That 256 GB figure is a manufacturer specification for the 2025 product generation; it is not a measure of the space available for games after system software and other data.

Which one should you choose?

  • Lean toward Switch 2 if switching between handheld, tabletop, and TV play is important to you, and the games you want are available and compatible.
  • Compare PlayStation closely if your decision depends on a particular PlayStation game, a specific performance target, or another model-specific feature. Verify those details from current Sony sources; the Nintendo specifications here cannot establish how a PlayStation system compares.
  • Pause before buying if your choice hinges on a specific older Switch game, online feature, camera setup, or display capability. Confirm that exact game or feature’s compatibility and requirements first.

There is no evidence-based universal winner in these facts. The useful distinction is whether Switch 2’s flexible play modes match your habits—and whether its confirmed game support and specifications meet your needs.
