Nintendo Switch 2 was exploited on launch day—but it was not fully jailbroken. The June 5, 2025 demonstration used a userland Return-Oriented Programming exploit to display custom graphics. It showed meaningful control-flow research on launch hardware, not kernel access, custom firmware, piracy, or a general-purpose homebrew solution.
Short answer: Nintendo Switch 2 was compromised at the userland level on launch day, but it was not meaningfully jailbroken. On June 5, 2025, security researcher and developer David Buchanan, known online as retr0id, demonstrated custom checkerboard and framebuffer graphics produced through a Return-Oriented Programming (ROP) exploit. The demonstration showed that unintended control flow could be achieved on launch hardware; it did not provide kernel or root access, custom firmware, piracy, or a consumer-ready homebrew solution.

Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. Reports about Buchanan’s demonstration appeared on June 6, which is why headlines described the console as being hacked “one day after launch.” The important qualification is that this was a restricted userland exploit—not a full-system break.
What the launch-day Switch 2 exploit actually did
The exploit apparently abused a weakness in a shared software library. By overwriting a return address and chaining sequences of instructions already present in the program, the attack redirected execution into a controlled sequence. That technique is known as Return-Oriented Programming, or ROP.

The visible result was a graphical proof of concept: custom checkerboard or framebuffer imagery appeared on the Switch 2. That is a technically significant result because it demonstrated control over execution that Nintendo’s software was not intended to provide. It also proved that a weakness inherited or transferred from earlier research could be adapted to the new hardware and operating environment.
But “running custom code” is potentially misleading shorthand. In this case, the researcher was reusing existing code gadgets rather than simply injecting and executing an arbitrary native program. The reported technique did not amount to unrestricted code execution, and it did not turn the console into an open development platform.
Tom’s Hardware described the result as a minor hack that ran on top of the operating system. Buchanan reportedly said that the discovery had no immediate practical purpose and did not jailbreak the console. The technical reporting is available here, while Notebookcheck’s launch-day account documents the graphical demonstration.

Userland, also called user space, is the lower-privilege area where ordinary applications run. It is separated from more sensitive parts of a console’s software stack, including the operating-system kernel, secure monitor, system services, and boot chain.
A userland exploit can be useful to researchers because it may let an attacker manipulate a vulnerable application or escape some of its normal logic. However, it does not automatically grant permission to control the entire device. A simplified comparison looks like this:

- CHECK YOUR CONSOLE MODEL: This memory card works only for Wii consoles with model number RVL-001 and for GameCube consoles. It is not supported on other models for Wii or on consoles for Wii U, so check the model number on your console before you order.
- FOUR 128MB AREAS: The 512MB memory card is split into four 128MB areas, and each area saves 2043 blocks. Press the area button on the card to move to the next area, and the matching light on the card shows which of the four areas is active.
- PLUG AND PLAY: The card needs no setup and is ready to save as soon as it is inserted. Insert or remove the memory card only while the console is turned off, and if a save seems to be missing, change areas first because the console reads one area at a time.
- ROOM FOR A BIG LIBRARY: The four areas add up to 8172 usable blocks of non-compressed save space, so one memory card can hold saves from a large collection of games without deleting older files.
- TRANSLUCENT BLUE WITH AREA LIGHTS: The memory card has a translucent blue shell with the 512MB label on the front, and four small lights on the card show which 128MB area is active, so you can see the current area before you start a game.
| Capability | What the launch-day demonstration showed | What it did not show |
|---|---|---|
| Control of execution | Constrained ROP-style control in userland | Unrestricted execution of any native program |
| Graphics | Custom checkerboard or framebuffer output | A complete replacement graphics or operating environment |
| Privilege level | Application-level or sandboxed context | Kernel, root, secure-monitor, or boot-chain access |
| Software loading | No public general-purpose loader | Custom firmware, unsigned applications, or a homebrew launcher |
| Game access | No demonstrated piracy capability | Unauthorized ROM loading or a practical backup loader |
This distinction is the central fact behind the story. “The Switch 2 was exploited” can be accurate if it refers to a userland vulnerability. “The Switch 2 was fully hacked” or “the Switch 2 can run homebrew” goes beyond what the demonstrated capability established.
Why the graphical demo mattered despite its limits
A framebuffer demonstration is not useful to most console owners, but it is a meaningful milestone for security research. It shows that the launch system contains an exploitable path from an application into unintended control flow. Researchers can use such a foothold to study the operating system, test mitigations, and determine whether additional vulnerabilities might exist above or below the initial access level.
That does not mean a kernel exploit is inevitable or imminent. A userland foothold must still overcome separate protections before it can control privileged services or alter the system permanently. Treating every exploit stage as if it were the final jailbreak leads to exactly the wrong expectations.
What was still missing after the launch exploit
The available reporting did not establish any of the following:
- Kernel access: The exploit did not reach the core privileged layer of the operating system.
- Root or system privileges: There was no demonstrated unrestricted control over protected system resources.
- Arbitrary native-code execution: The technique relied on chaining existing instruction sequences rather than providing a simple route to run any desired native binary.
- Custom firmware: No working public replacement or modified firmware solution was demonstrated.
- Homebrew loading: The graphics proof of concept was not a general-purpose homebrew launcher.
- Piracy: The demonstration did not establish unauthorized game or ROM loading.
- A general consumer jailbreak: There was no safe, finished procedure that ordinary owners could use to take control of their consoles.
In particular, custom graphics should not be confused with a custom operating system. Drawing an image inside a restricted process is a much narrower achievement than booting unsigned software or modifying protected system components.

How Switch 2’s security model raises the bar
A specialist analysis of Switch 2 security describes the console as using Nintendo’s Horizon operating-system platform on an Nvidia Tegra T239 system-on-chip. That analysis also points to anti-glitching protections intended to make certain physical attacks more difficult, along with sandboxing, address-space layout randomization (ASLR), and a small, heavily reviewed kernel.

These are expert-analysis claims rather than Nintendo-published vulnerability findings, so they should not be read as a complete independent audit of the console. They do, however, help explain why a userland exploit is not equivalent to full control. The analysis argues that the separation between ordinary applications and privileged components makes a software-only path to a complete compromise substantially harder than the launch headlines suggested. Read the specialist security analysis for the architectural discussion.
The same analysis says that transferring a Switch 1 save exploit to Switch 2 produced the graphics demonstration. It also notes that userland access remained restricted by sandboxing and did not expose useful system resources such as the SD card. That limitation is a practical explanation for why the demo was visually compelling but not an immediately useful jailbreak.
Update: the later offline userland exploit
The story did not end with the launch-day demonstration. On July 21, 2026, Notebookcheck reported that a researcher using the name Gezine disclosed an offline userland exploit working on both the original Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 across firmware versions. The report said the method did not rely on WebKit or save-data transfer and was intended to remove restrictions associated with an earlier save-based entry point.
That disclosure is important because an offline, cross-firmware entry point can be more flexible for research than a method dependent on a particular web component or transferred save file. It still does not change the headline’s essential qualification: the reported exploit runs inside an application sandbox.

As of the research cutoff of August 12, 2026, the available sources do not establish a public kernel exploit, boot-chain compromise, or consumer-ready custom firmware release for Switch 2. The later disclosure should not be presented as proof that full system access is about to arrive. Notebookcheck’s report explains the later offline exploit and its limitations.
Could Nintendo ban or brick a console for this?
Nintendo’s North American Switch 2 User Agreement prohibits modifying, reverse engineering, decrypting, bypassing, defeating, tampering with, or circumventing console and software protections, including through unauthorized hardware or software. The agreement says unauthorized modification or devices may result in content removal and that Nintendo may render the console or software permanently unusable in whole or in part. It also describes technical measures that may disable access if Nintendo determines, or reasonably suspects, a violation.
Those are the agreement’s stated contractual and technical remedies. They are not evidence that Nintendo has already banned or damaged consumer consoles because of Buchanan’s launch-day demonstration. No source in the available research documents such enforcement against the demonstration itself.
For owners, the sensible distinction is straightforward: researching a vulnerability and publicly demonstrating a limited proof of concept are not the same as using unauthorized modification tools on a retail console. Anyone considering system modification should read the applicable agreement and understand that software updates, account access, stored content, warranty support, and the device itself may be at risk.

What Switch 2 owners should do
- Do not interpret the demo as an invitation to install exploit files. The launch demonstration was not a finished consumer tool, and the research does not support a safe modification procedure.
- Keep the console updated through official channels. Nintendo publishes system-update information through its regional support pages. Firmware labels and availability can vary by region; for example, the Australian support listing in the research identifies version 22.5.0 as released on June 16, 2026. Check the page for the region in which the console is used rather than relying on a headline or social-media post. See Nintendo’s official Switch 2 system-update information.
- Be skeptical of “full jailbreak” claims. Look for evidence of the specific capability being claimed: kernel access, a reproducible public release, unsigned software loading, or custom firmware. A screenshot, framebuffer demo, or claim of “custom code” is not enough.
- Protect your account and data. Avoid unverified binaries, save files, and guides that ask for account credentials or promise piracy. The risk may include malware or data loss in addition to Nintendo’s enforcement options.
The accurate headline
The most defensible summary is: Switch 2 had a userland ROP exploit demonstrated on launch day, but it was not fully jailbroken. The graphics proof of concept showed an early weakness in the new console’s software environment. The later offline disclosure showed that userland research continued across firmware versions. Neither result, based on the available evidence as of August 12, 2026, demonstrates kernel control, boot-chain compromise, custom firmware, piracy, or a practical general-purpose homebrew solution.

That may be less dramatic than “Nintendo’s new console was cracked in 24 hours,” but it is the distinction that matters. A foothold in userland is the beginning of a security investigation—not the same thing as ownership of the entire system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was the Nintendo Switch 2 fully hacked one day after launch?
No. The launch-day demonstration showed constrained userland control and custom framebuffer graphics, not unrestricted control of the console.
Can the Switch 2 exploit run homebrew or pirated games?
No public custom firmware, general-purpose homebrew launcher, piracy method, kernel exploit, or boot-chain compromise is established by the available research as of August 12, 2026.
What does “userland exploit” mean on Switch 2?
Userland is the lower-privilege environment used by ordinary applications. Kernel and boot-chain access are more privileged levels needed for broad system modification, so a userland exploit does not automatically provide a jailbreak.
Can modifying a Switch 2 put the console or account at risk?
Nintendo’s North American User Agreement prohibits bypassing or tampering with console protections and describes possible content-removal, disabling, or permanent-usability consequences. Those terms do not prove that Nintendo has already banned or bricked consoles because of this specific demonstration.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Switch 2 was exploited at the userland level on launch day, producing custom graphics through ROP. It was not fully hacked: no public kernel exploit, root access, custom firmware, piracy method, or consumer-ready homebrew launcher was established. A later offline userland disclosure expanded the research but did not change that conclusion.
