Switch 2 includes 256GB of nominal internal storage, although system data reduces the amount available to games. A microSD Express card is optional, sold separately, and is the only type of removable card that can store Switch 2 game data.
Your best capacity depends on how you buy games. Physical-card players may never need expansion. Mixed-library players will usually find 512GB the practical middle ground, while a 1TB card suits a large digital library or frequent game-key-card downloads. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB.

What storage Nintendo Switch 2 includes
256GB of built-in system storage
Nintendo states that “the internal storage of Nintendo Switch 2, where digital games and save data are stored, is 256 GB.” That is the nominal capacity, not the amount available for your games. The operating system and other system data reserve part of it, so the usable figure shown by your console will be lower.

Internal storage is permanently installed, always available, and does not depend on an accessory. It is the only location for game save data. Downloadable games, updates, and downloadable content can also use this space.

Removable expansion requires microSD Express
Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards for storage. Nintendo selected the Express standard because it provides faster access than earlier microSD models and is required for games to run smoothly from removable storage. Cards are not included with the console and must be purchased separately.
Nintendo supports capacities up to 2TB. A card must be a genuine microSD Express product; a card described only as microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC is not automatically compatible.
What each storage location can hold
| Content | Switch 2 internal storage | microSD Express |
|---|---|---|
| Downloaded games | Yes | Yes |
| Game updates | Yes | Yes |
| Downloadable content | Yes | Yes |
| Game save data | Yes; this is the required location | No |
| In-game screenshots and videos | Yes | Yes |
When a microSD Express card is inserted, Nintendo’s support guidance says it becomes the default location for downloadable software. Save data remains in system memory even when the associated game is installed on the card. Removing the card therefore removes access to the installed software, but it does not move or delete the save stored internally.

Can you use an original Switch microSD card?
Not for Switch 2 game storage. Regular microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards used by the original Switch cannot save or load Switch 2 digital games, updates, downloadable content, or save data. The Switch 2 compatibility requirement is specifically microSD Express.
An old card can still be useful for importing screenshots and videos. Nintendo documents media import as a separate function, but the existing card cannot become a Switch 2 game-storage device. If you want to keep playing downloaded Switch 2 software from removable storage, replace the old card with a compliant microSD Express model.

Internal storage versus microSD Express
| Consideration | Internal storage | microSD Express |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 256GB nominal, with some space reserved for system use | Optional expansion from the card’s rated capacity up to Nintendo’s 2TB supported maximum |
| Availability | Built into every console | Requires a separately purchased card |
| Performance consistency | Fixed, built-in storage that is always present | Designed for faster access than older microSD standards, but performance depends on the card and host conditions |
| Downloadable games, updates, DLC | Supported | Supported; becomes the default download location when inserted |
| Save data | Required location | Not supported for saves |
| Physical game cards | May be used for required downloads | May be used for required downloads |
| Management | No removable media to misplace | Nintendo recommends one card because software spread across multiple cards cannot later be combined |
The built-in drive is the simplest choice when your library fits. A microSD Express card adds capacity without changing the console, but it introduces removable-media management and another component that must meet Nintendo’s standard.
How physical cards and game-key cards affect storage
Standard game cards
A conventional physical game card can start immediately from the card. Depending on the title, it may still require updates or additional downloadable content, which can consume internal or microSD Express space.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Game-key cards
A game-key card contains a license key rather than the complete game. The console needs an internet connection to download the game before you can play it. That download goes to system memory or the inserted microSD Express card, and the required space is printed on the package or listed on the software page.
Game-key cards therefore behave like large digital installations for storage planning. Buying several of them can fill the internal drive quickly even if you prefer physical purchases.
Do you need a microSD Express card?
You can stay with internal storage when
- Your library is small enough to fit in the available internal space after system data is accounted for.
- You mainly buy standard physical game cards and do not keep many downloadable titles installed.
- You are comfortable uninstalling a finished download and reinstalling it later.
- You rarely install large updates, expansions, or game-key-card software.
Add a card when
- Downloaded games and their updates approach the free internal capacity.
- You want several large games installed at the same time.
- You regularly buy downloadable content or game-key cards.
- You do not want to delete and redownload titles to make room.
- You need one long-term library rather than rotating installations.
There is no performance requirement to purchase a card on day one. The console works without one, and adding expansion later is practical as long as you choose microSD Express and complete the required first-use update.

Choosing 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB
| Capacity | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | Light digital users who want roughly one additional internal-storage-sized pool | Check the actual game mix and the card’s usable capacity before buying; large titles and updates can consume space quickly. |
| 512GB | Mixed libraries and frequent downloads | Usually the balanced option when you own both physical and digital software and want room for multiple active games. |
| 1TB | Large all-digital libraries or many game-key-card installations | Costs more, but reduces the need to rotate software. Capacity estimates are not guarantees of a specific number of games. |
| 2TB | Users seeking Nintendo’s maximum supported expansion | Verify that the product is genuinely microSD Express and not a conventional 2TB microSD card using incompatible technology. |
Why game counts are only estimates
SanDisk’s official datasheet for its officially licensed “SANDISK microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2” lists 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB versions. It claims up to 880MB/s read speed and estimates capacity for up to 9, 18, and 36 Switch 2 games respectively. Those figures are manufacturer estimates, not independent testing. SanDisk notes that actual performance can be lower depending on the host device, interface, usage conditions, and other factors.
Game sizes vary substantially, and patches, downloadable content, screenshots, videos, and reserved file space reduce the number of complete installations that fit. Use the printed requirements for the specific games you intend to keep rather than treating a game-count claim as a guarantee.
Buying checklist for a compatible card
- Look for the words “microSD Express.” Do not rely on a capacity number, a high speed rating, or a familiar microSDXC label alone.
- Stay at or below 2TB. Nintendo’s supported ceiling is 2TB; larger claims are outside the documented range.
- Match capacity to your library. Choose 256GB for a light expansion, 512GB for a mixed collection, 1TB for heavy digital use, or 2TB when maximum expansion is worth the cost.
- Buy from a trustworthy seller. Counterfeit cards can report a false capacity or fail under sustained writes. Keep the receipt and packaging until the card has been recognized and used successfully.
- Plan for the first-use update. Nintendo says an internet system update is required the first time a microSD Express card is used. Have the console online before you need to install a large game.
- Prefer one card for the lifetime of the console. Nintendo recommends one card because software distributed across multiple cards cannot later be combined into a single library.
Installing and using the card
- Purchase a card explicitly identified as microSD Express and within Nintendo’s 2TB limit.
- Power down or follow the console’s documented insertion procedure, then insert the card into the Switch 2 card slot.
- Connect the console to the internet when prompted. The first use requires a system update before the card can serve as storage.
- Allow the console to recognize the card. With the card inserted, newly downloaded software is directed to it by default, while save data continues to use system memory.
- Install or redownload software normally. Check each game’s listed required space, especially for game-key cards and large updates.
- Keep the card inserted while you want to play software installed on it. Removing it makes those installations unavailable until the card is reinserted.
The card expands storage; it does not provide a second location for save backups. Protect the card and console together, because a replacement card will not contain the save data that remains in system memory.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a regular microSDXC card
A conventional card can be fast by its own specification and still be incompatible. Confirm the Express designation on the product itself and its technical documentation.
Assuming the full printed capacity is available
Manufacturers rate cards in nominal gigabytes, while the console and file system consume some space. The same applies to the console’s advertised 256GB internal storage.

Expecting saves to follow the game
Save data cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card. If the card is removed, the save remains in system memory, but the installed game files on the card cannot be used until the card returns.
Trying to merge several cards later
Nintendo advises using one card because software spread across multiple cards cannot be combined afterward. Decide on a long-term capacity before filling a small card.
Forgetting the game-key-card download
A game-key card is not a complete local installation. It needs an internet download and enough free space on system memory or microSD Express, as specified on the package or software listing.
Judging a card solely by a headline speed
Advertised read speed is a manufacturer maximum under stated conditions. SanDisk’s 880MB/s figure, for example, is not a guarantee that every Switch 2 operation will reach that rate.

Mostly physical-game players
Start with internal storage. Keep a card purchase in reserve for updates, downloadable content, or a game-key card that requires a full download. A 256GB card is sufficient if you later want one additional pool of space and your installed games are modest in size.

Mixed physical and digital players
A 512GB microSD Express card offers room for a rotating selection of downloads while leaving physical purchases available as cards. It also reduces the frequency of uninstalling games solely to install a new release.
Digital-first players
Choose 1TB when you routinely buy downloads, expansions, and patches or want many games installed simultaneously. The larger card is particularly useful when game-key cards are part of your collection because each one requires a local download.
Collectors who want a single long-term library
A 2TB microSD Express card is the largest capacity Nintendo documents for Switch 2. Verify the standard carefully and remember that the card still does not hold save data, so your save-management strategy remains tied to system memory.
Bottom line
Switch 2’s 256GB internal storage is enough to begin playing without an accessory. Buy one microSD Express card when your actual installation habits—not a theoretical game count—show that internal space is limiting you. For most mixed libraries, 512GB is the balanced starting point; 1TB is the safer choice for heavy digital use, and 2TB is the documented maximum for a single-card library.
