The Nintendo Switch 2 photos that surfaced online in September 2024 anticipated the console’s visible design, which Nintendo later showed officially in January 2025. That match supports the images’ accuracy about the exterior; it does not establish who supplied them, how they originated, or whether accompanying rumors were true. The available sources also do not authenticate a separate leaked high-quality video.
Were the Nintendo Switch 2 leak photos real?
In hindsight, the images’ depiction of the console’s exterior matched the design Nintendo showed in its first-look video. Nintendo Life’s retrospective describes the September 2024 images as accurate after the official reveal. That is a comparison of the visible design—not confirmation by Nintendo of the leaker or the images’ provenance. Nintendo Life’s timeline was published June 20, 2025.

The original images were unverified when they appeared. The evidence available does not establish the leaker’s identity, a chain of custody, or metadata from original files. A design match also does not authenticate technical specifications or other claims that circulated alongside the pictures.
What did the leaked Switch 2 pictures show?
Nintendo Life’s account of the September 18, 2024 images describes a console with larger-looking Joy-Con, rounded edges, additional buttons, and an extra USB-C port. These are descriptions of what appeared in the photos, not specifications independently established by the leak.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Nintendo’s official January 16, 2025 first-look video later showed Switch 2 as the successor to Nintendo Switch. The exterior resemblance is the basis for calling the photos accurate in hindsight. Nintendo’s announcement identified the video as an introduction to the hardware.
Was there a leaked high-quality Switch 2 video?
The sources available here document the September photo leak and Nintendo’s official first-look video, but do not identify or authenticate a particular leaked high-quality video. The official video is not evidence that a separate pre-reveal video leaked.

Nintendo’s video was published on January 16, 2025, months after the photos appeared. Nintendo said the system would release in 2025 and cautioned that some Nintendo Switch games might not be supported or fully compatible. Those were announcement details, not claims established by the earlier photos.
What is known about the photos’ origin?
A September 2024 discussion on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours said the original alleged Chinese-language image post had later been deleted. Participants also noted that the images and accompanying technical specifications might not have come from the same user. This is community discussion, not authoritative verification; it illustrates why the image match cannot establish the source or authenticate every claim attached to it. The discussion thread is user-generated and provenance-limited.

What the later official information confirms
Nintendo’s June 11, 2025 report says Switch 2 launched June 5. Nintendo also reported that the system sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in the four days following launch, calling it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system ever. This figure comes from Nintendo’s internal data and was published by the company. Nintendo’s launch report also states that the display supports full 1080p and the system can output 4K when connected to a compatible TV or monitor. These are details about the released console, not claims to attribute to the 2024 photos.
For event context, the Associated Press reported a media preview on April 3, 2025, at which Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said, “You’ll be joining us as we step into a new era of Nintendo.” That remark was about the preview, not the leak. The AP report covers that event.
