Nintendo Switch 2 requires a genuine microSD Express card for expandable storage. Nintendo supports cards up to 2TB, but it does not publish a minimum read or write speed. For most digital libraries, a 512GB microSD Express card is the best balance; choose 256GB for lighter use, or 1TB–2TB if you expect to keep many large downloads installed.
What microSD card does Nintendo Switch 2 use?
Switch 2 is compatible with microSD Express cards only. The card must explicitly meet the microSD Express standard and should carry the microSD EX symbol. Nintendo’s support wording is clear: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.”

That excludes ordinary microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards, including older cards that worked in the original Nintendo Switch. A conventional card can still be inserted to import screenshots and videos from an earlier Switch, but Nintendo says it cannot be used for other Switch 2 storage purposes, such as installing games or storing updates.
Do not treat a product name such as “Extreme” or “Ultra,” a UHS-I label, or a high number printed on ordinary microSD packaging as proof of Express compatibility. The word Express must appear in the specification.

How much capacity should you buy?
Nintendo documents support for any microSD Express card up to 2TB. The lower capacities below are usage-based recommendations, not Nintendo requirements. Your choice depends on how many games you buy digitally, whether you keep completed games installed, and how often you want to manage storage.
| Capacity | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | A lighter digital library, a mixture of physical and digital games, or selective downloading | Lower starting cost, but you may need to archive or redownload games sooner |
| 512GB | Most players who buy a regular mix of digital games and want meaningful headroom | Costs more than 256GB but substantially reduces storage-management chores |
| 1TB | Frequent digital buyers, large downloads, and players who keep many games installed | Higher purchase price in exchange for fewer removals and redownloads |
| 2TB | Heavy digital users who want the maximum documented capacity | Highest cost; unnecessary if you regularly archive games or use mostly physical software |
Why 512GB is the practical default
A 512GB microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2 gives a typical digital-focused player room for a substantial installed library without paying for the largest capacity. It is the sensible midpoint when you do not yet know how quickly your collection will grow. It also leaves more flexibility for downloadable content, patches, screenshots and captured video than a 256GB card.
When 256GB is enough
Choose 256GB if you buy many games on cartridge, download only a few titles at a time, or are comfortable archiving software and redownloading it later. It is a reasonable lower-cost starting point, but it is not a Nintendo-mandated minimum.

Move to 1TB if your library is primarily digital, you keep large games installed after finishing them, or several people use the same console. A 2TB card is the maximum capacity Nintendo documents and is aimed at owners who want maximum headroom and are willing to pay for it. Nintendo does not state that a 1TB or 2TB card is required for any particular game.

What speed does Switch 2 need?
Nintendo requires the microSD Express standard because it provides faster access than older microSD designs and is intended to support smooth game operation. However, Nintendo’s cited compatibility and FAQ material does not publish a minimum read-speed or write-speed figure in megabytes per second.
That means there is no Nintendo-certified “minimum 800MB/s” or “minimum 1,000MB/s” target to shop for. Manufacturer speed figures are useful when comparing products, but they are maximum or rated values under the manufacturer’s test conditions, not a console requirement.
| Product example | Published specification | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| SanDisk microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2 | Up to 880MB/s read and up to 650MB/s write, according to SanDisk’s 2025/2026 product datasheet | A documented Express product example; the figures are manufacturer maximums, not Nintendo’s required thresholds |
| Samsung microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2, 256GB | 800MB/s sequential read, according to Samsung’s 2025 product datasheet | A 256GB Express example with a published sequential-read rating, not an exhaustive compatibility list |
After confirming Express compatibility, compare capacity, seller authenticity, warranty terms and price. Paying extra for a larger advertised number does not provide a documented Nintendo benefit if both cards meet the required standard.
What can the card store?
The card expands storage for downloadable software, software-update data, downloadable content, screenshots and captured gameplay videos. This is where capacity makes a practical difference: a larger card lets you retain more installed content and recordings before archiving anything.

Game-save data is separate. Nintendo stores save data in the console’s system memory, and it cannot be copied or saved to the microSD Express card. Buying a 2TB card therefore does not increase the number of save-data slots or move save files out of system memory.
How to install and replace a card
- Buy a card whose packaging and manufacturer specification explicitly say microSD Express. Confirm the capacity and warranty before opening it.
- Power the console down completely before inserting or removing the card. Do not handle the card while software is being written.
- Insert the card into the Switch 2 microSD slot in the orientation shown by the console. If the system asks to format a new card, follow the on-screen formatting prompt; formatting erases existing data on that card.
- After setup, use the console’s storage-management controls to check available space and choose where new downloadable software is stored.
Use one card as the console’s main storage whenever possible. Nintendo recommends a single microSD Express card. If you outgrow it, copy the data to a larger card using the supported transfer process, then use the larger card as the replacement.
Do not expect the console to merge installed downloads from several cards. Nintendo says downloadable software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card through the console. If you keep changing cards, you may have to reinstall or redownload content that is not present on the card currently inserted.
Can you reuse an old Nintendo Switch SD card?
Not for normal Switch 2 storage. An ordinary card from the original Switch cannot store Switch 2 games, updates or DLC. Nintendo permits a limited media-import use: you may insert a conventional card to bring over screenshots and videos from the earlier console. For every other Switch 2 storage purpose, replace it with microSD Express.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you are moving to a larger Express card, keep the original card intact until you have confirmed that the replacement contains the content you need. Save data is held in system memory rather than either card, so changing cards does not transfer or delete saves by itself; downloaded software and media are the items that require storage planning.
How to choose between competing microSD Express cards
- Compatibility: The listing must explicitly identify the microSD Express standard. A fast-looking ordinary microSD card is not an equivalent substitute.
- Capacity: Select 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB according to your digital-library habits, not according to an alleged Nintendo minimum.
- Advertised speed: Use read and write figures to compare documented products, while remembering that Nintendo has not published a minimum MB/s threshold.
- Authenticity: Buy from a reputable seller and check packaging, serial information and the manufacturer’s documentation. Counterfeit flash cards can report a false capacity and fail when filled.
- Warranty: Check the warranty period, regional coverage and return policy before purchase. A card failure can make installed downloads unavailable until they are restored.
- Price: Compare current prices only after confirming that the products are the same capacity and genuinely Express. Promotional pricing and stock change by region and date.
Common mistakes and fixes
“My card says Ultra, so it should work.”
“Ultra,” “Extreme,” UHS-I and similar labels describe product families or interfaces, not necessarily microSD Express. Check for the explicit Express designation and microSD EX symbol. If those are absent, do not use the card for Switch 2 storage.
“The card advertises 800MB/s, so it must be compatible.”
A speed number alone does not establish the required standard. Confirm that the card is microSD Express first; only then use the advertised speed as a secondary comparison.

“A bigger card will hold my save files.”
It will not. Save data remains in system memory. The card holds downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots and video captures.

“I can combine two partly filled cards later.”
Nintendo says the console cannot combine downloadable software stored across multiple cards. Choose enough capacity at the start or plan to copy data to a larger card before retiring the smaller one.
“The card is Express, but the console does not recognize it.”
Power the console off, remove and reseat the card, and check that its capacity and Express designation match the product documentation. If the system requests formatting, remember that formatting erases the card. Persistent recognition problems are a reason to use the seller’s return process or the manufacturer’s warranty rather than repeatedly reformatting a suspect card.
Recommended buying decision
For most owners, buy a 512GB microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2 from a reputable seller. Select 256GB when your library is mostly physical or deliberately curated; choose 1TB when you routinely keep many digital games installed; choose 2TB only when maximum capacity justifies the additional cost. In every case, compatibility with the microSD Express standard comes before the advertised speed number.
