Nintendo’s Switch 2 Mii creator asks users to choose a “style” rather than a gender, but its on-screen caveat says some games may still use that style as a gender indicator. The change has drawn comparisons with President Donald Trump’s January 2025 executive order on federal sex policy; the order does not mention Nintendo, and the available evidence does not establish that Trump or his administration directly responded to the Mii change.
What changed in Mii creation on Switch 2?
Nintendo’s original Switch instructions tell users creating a Mii from scratch to select a gender before customizing features such as the face, eyebrows, nose and facial hair. Nintendo’s original Switch guide describes that workflow.

On Switch 2, Mii creation is a system feature for making, editing, deleting and sharing Miis, as described in Nintendo’s Switch 2 support guide. Engadget reported on June 4, 2025, that the creator asks users to choose a Mii “style” instead of a gender. The screen includes the warning: “Some games may use style as a gender indicator.” Engadget’s report said the styles resemble stock models used in earlier generations.
That warning is important: changing the console creator’s label does not prove that games treat the selected style as gender-neutral, or that every game follows the same rules.

Did Trump respond to Nintendo’s Mii change?
The available reporting and official material do not establish a verifiable direct statement by Trump or an administration representative specifically responding to the Switch 2 Mii interface change. That is a limit of the evidence available here, not proof that no such statement exists anywhere.
How is the executive order related—and what does it not show?
Executive Order 14168, “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” is dated January 20, 2025. Its text sets federal policy language recognizing two sexes, male and female, and defines terms for federal interpretation and administration. The official order does not mention Nintendo, Miis, video games or Switch 2.

The order is relevant context for the wider U.S. policy debate, but the fact that it predates the June 2025 report does not establish that it caused Nintendo’s terminology change. No quoted statement from Trump or Nintendo in the available sources explains a connection between the order and the Mii creator.

The Switch 2 creator’s “style” setting is not necessarily the final word on how a particular game handles gender. Nintendo’s official FAQ for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream says players can select Male, Female or Non-Binary for a Mii’s gender, and separately choose dating preferences from Male, Female or Non-Binary, combining options or choosing none. The FAQ says gender selection does not change the game system or story content.
