If Walmart canceled your Nintendo Switch 2 preorder, first check whether the payment is pending or posted. A pending entry is usually an authorization hold, not a completed charge; Walmart says it cannot remove that hold, so the card issuer handles its release. If the payment posted, Walmart says it will credit the applicable payment account, and its canceled-orders guidance says a credit- or debit-card refund can take up to seven business days. Is the Walmart payment pending or posted?
The status determines whether you are waiting for a bank to release an authorization or for Walmart to send back money it collected. Do not treat a pending hold as a completed payment or look for a separate refund credit before checking the transaction status.
If the entry is pending
Walmart says it will not charge for an order it cancels. However, when you place an order, the payment provider may show a temporary authorization hold while the transaction is being processed. That hold can remain visible after cancellation even though Walmart did not collect the money as a completed charge.
Walmart states, “We cannot remove the temporary hold.” The card issuer or bank controls its release under its own policies. If the hold remains, ask the issuer whether it is still an authorization and when it expects to release it. Give the issuer the transaction date, amount, and Walmart cancellation notice if requested.
Walmart’s general help about authorization holds discusses timing in the context of an order completing; it does not establish a universal deadline for releasing every hold on a canceled preorder. Do not interpret that separate guidance as a guaranteed wait period for your cancellation. Your issuer can clarify what status it sees and what timing applies to your account. The general hold page’s mention of removal taking up to ten days concerns an order completing; it is not a ten-day deadline for every canceled preorder.
If your bank’s app continues to display the amount as pending, ask the bank whether the entry has settled or remains an authorization. That is a more useful question than asking Walmart to “refund” an amount Walmart says it did not charge. If the bank says it has posted, save that information and contact Walmart to check whether a credit has been issued. Avoid relying on a particular number of days unless your issuer confirms the timing for that authorization.
If the entry is posted
A posted transaction means the payment was completed rather than merely authorized. Walmart’s Walmart.com terms say that when Walmart cancels after charging the customer, it will issue a credit to the applicable payment account. Match the posted transaction to the canceled order, then look for a separate credit or reversal on the payment account.
For a credit- or debit-card payment, Walmart’s canceled-orders guidance says a refund can take up to seven business days. This is Walmart’s stated policy timeline, not a reported average or a promise that every bank will display the credit on the same day. If the payment is still posted without a matching credit after that period, contact Walmart with the order and transaction details.
Keep the distinction between Walmart issuing a credit and your bank displaying it. If Walmart support confirms a credit was sent, check the original account and ask the issuer about its processing or posting status. If Walmart cannot find a credit, ask support to review the canceled order and the original charge. For a canceled preorder, the relevant issue is whether Walmart charged and credited the order—not whether a console return was opened.

How do I get the refund if Walmart charged me?
If the transaction posted, ask Walmart to check the canceled order and the status of the credit; do not file a merchandise return for a console that was canceled before shipment. Use Walmart’s Help Center or chat and have the relevant details ready so support can locate the order and payment.
- Walmart order number and the date of the cancellation
- Cancellation email and the item’s status in Purchase history

These are useful details to provide, not a claim that Walmart requires a particular form or document. Ask for the canceled-order refund status and whether Walmart records a completed charge. Who should I contact if the order was sold by a Marketplace seller?
Check the order details for the “Sold by” label. If a third-party Marketplace seller is identified, use Walmart’s documented seller-contact route: Account → Purchase History → View Details → Contact Seller. Walmart says sellers must respond within two business days, and its Marketplace guidance points customers to Walmart Customer Care if the seller does not resolve the issue.
Keep the seller’s response and your cancellation notice with the order information. The seller-response period is not a refund-processing timeline: it tells you when the seller is expected to respond, not when a bank or payment provider will post a credit. If the Walmart order page identifies Walmart as the seller, use Walmart Help or chat instead of the Marketplace seller route.

Do not apply return-window instructions for delivered merchandise to a console that never shipped. A canceled, unshipped order is a cancellation-and-payment question; a console that shipped may require a different process.
For a Marketplace order, seller contact and Walmart Customer Care have different roles from the bank’s role. The seller is the documented first contact through the order details, and Walmart says Customer Care can help when the seller does not resolve the problem. Refunding the old order and buying a replacement are separate decisions. Nintendo of America announced that the U.S. system MSRP changed from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. Those are manufacturer’s suggested retail prices, not verified Walmart selling prices, and neither figure establishes the amount Walmart will charge for a replacement purchase. Nintendo’s U.S. price revision notice covers the MSRP change. It does not verify a retailer’s current stock, price, or ability to recreate a canceled order.
The preorder period described here is an earlier one, not an open launch preorder in October 2026. Nintendo announced U.S. retail preorders beginning April 24, 2025, and a June 5, 2025 launch. That history can help identify which order you are checking, but it does not change the refund steps or establish that a new order is available at the original price. What should I avoid doing?
Keep the response tied to the payment status and the order that was canceled. Several common actions can send the issue to the wrong place or create confusion about what is being resolved.
- Do not call a pending hold a refund delay. First establish whether the entry is a completed charge. A pending authorization is handled by the issuer’s release process.
- Do not press “Request Cancellation” after Walmart has already canceled the order. Walmart documents that button as a way for a customer to request cancellation of an order, not as a refund step for an order already canceled by Walmart.
- Do not start an ordinary return for an unshipped console. Ask about cancellation and payment status instead. A shipped item may need separate return guidance.
- Do not assume every item in a multi-item order was canceled. Confirm each item’s status before calculating what should be refunded.
- Do not assume a replacement order will use the prior preorder price. A new purchase has its own listing, seller, availability, and price.
Walmart’s order editing and cancellation help explains the customer-requested cancellation process. It is separate from checking the credit for an order Walmart has already canceled.
There is also no need to take two conflicting steps at once. If the account shows pending, ask the issuer about the hold; if it shows posted, ask Walmart about the credit. A new cancellation request is not a way to speed up either process, and a merchandise-return request is not the right fit for an item that never shipped. Keeping the order status, payment status, and seller identity clear makes it easier to direct the question to the party that can answer it.

In short, the paths are not interchangeable: pending versus posted determines whether the bank or Walmart is the first contact; Walmart-sold versus Marketplace-sold determines whether you use Walmart Help directly or first contact the seller through View Details; and a partial cancellation means checking the individual item rather than assuming the order total is due back. These distinctions also apply if you paid through PayPal or a gift card: the payment method affects when it may have been charged and which account or balance to check, but it does not turn a pending authorization into a completed payment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does seven business days mean seven calendar days?
No. Business-day guidance does not count every calendar day; weekends and applicable bank holidays can affect when a card issuer processes or displays a credit. Ask your issuer about its posting schedule if Walmart confirms it has issued a credit.
Can Walmart cancel a confirmed order?
Walmart’s terms allow it to cancel for pricing or availability errors even after confirmation. An order confirmation therefore does not establish that the preorder will ship or that the original price will be honored if you place a new order.
