Yes. Nintendo can change the Switch 2’s manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) after launch, and it has already raised it in the United States. The console launched on June 5, 2025 at a U.S. MSRP of $449.99. Nintendo of America set a new U.S. MSRP of $499.99 effective September 1, 2026, a $50 increase. Nintendo’s statements also leave room for a future decrease, but no official price cut has been announced or promised. The price Nintendo publishes is separate from the amount a particular retailer charges, so a store’s sale, markup or regional tax treatment can produce a different checkout total.

What changed in the Switch 2 price after launch?

Nintendo’s launch price was not permanently locked. The Switch 2 released on June 5, 2025, and Nintendo of America’s April 18, 2025 pre-order notice listed a U.S. MSRP of $449.99. On September 1, 2026, Nintendo of America revised that MSRP to $499.99, citing market-condition changes expected to continue over the medium to long term.

The change is an MSRP revision, not proof that every shop immediately charged $499.99. MSRP is Nintendo’s suggested price; retailers can set their own prices, run promotions or apply a markup. Nintendo’s U.S. purchase terms say the price displayed in its Store at the time of purchase controls, that prices and availability can change without notice, and that Nintendo does not have to match another seller’s advertised price.

Can Nintendo lower the Switch 2 price later?

It can, but there is no announced reduction to rely on. Nintendo of America has said that “other adjustments to the price of any Nintendo product are also possible in the future depending on market conditions.” That wording permits an increase or a decrease; it is not a timetable or forecast for a sale.

A lower price could take the form of a permanent MSRP revision, a retailer promotion, a temporary Nintendo Store offer or a different bundle. Those are separate decisions. Until Nintendo publishes a new regional MSRP, the current official figure for that region remains the relevant reference point, while a retailer’s temporary discount may come and go independently.

What are the official regional price changes?

Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 corporate notice recorded different prices and effective dates by market. Do not convert these figures into a single worldwide price: currencies, tax treatment, language configurations and local market conditions differ.

The U.S. and European revisions took effect on September 1, 2026, while the Japanese-Language System change took effect on May 25, 2026. Japan’s Multi-Language System was specifically described as remaining unchanged in that corporate notice, so configuration matters as much as country.

Why does Nintendo change hardware prices?

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has said that prices for Switch 2 products are set through an overall evaluation of factors in each region. Nintendo’s investor Q&A identifies several considerations:

  • Consumer perception of the product’s price and value.
  • Exchange-rate differences compared with the original Switch launch.
  • Local market conditions.
  • Tariffs and other cost pressures.

This framework explains why a price can differ by country and why a future revision is commercially possible. It does not establish that any particular cost will produce another increase, nor does it predict when Nintendo might lower the MSRP.

Does Nintendo have to honor the $449.99 launch price?

No. The launch MSRP was the suggested U.S. price for the launch period, not a lifetime price guarantee. Once Nintendo published the $499.99 U.S. MSRP effective September 1, 2026, a later buyer could not assume that the old launch figure still applied.

Pre-order or retailer contracts can have their own terms, but Nintendo’s general U.S. Store terms do not promise to preserve an earlier price for future purchases. Check the confirmation and charge from the seller you are using rather than relying on an old announcement or a cached product page.

Is Nintendo’s MSRP the same as the price at every retailer?

No. MSRP is a reference price, not a universal checkout requirement. One retailer may sell below MSRP during a promotion, another may charge more when stock is scarce, and a third may display a tax-inclusive total that looks higher than the U.S. pre-tax figure.

Nintendo’s terms also state that it is not obligated to match another seller’s advertised price. Compare the same console configuration, included accessories, shipping, taxes and return terms before deciding that one listing is cheaper.

Should you buy a Switch 2 now or wait?

There is no risk-free answer. Buying now removes the possibility that Nintendo raises the regional MSRP again, while waiting preserves the chance of a sale or a lower official price. Nintendo has announced neither a future increase nor a cut beyond the changes already listed.

Buying now versus waiting (checked Oct 2026)
Decision What it protects against What it may give up What to verify
Buy at the current price Another Nintendo MSRP increase before you purchase. A later retailer promotion or official reduction. That the listing is the correct regional model and shows the final tax-inclusive total.
Wait for a deal Paying before a temporary discount appears. Another MSRP revision, limited stock or a higher eventual checkout price. The seller’s price-change, cancellation and return policies.

Your timing is more defensible if you decide which risk matters most: certainty of having the console at today’s quoted price, or the possibility of saving later. A price tracker or deal alert can help monitor retailer promotions, but it cannot guarantee that Nintendo will cut the MSRP.

How should you compare Switch 2 prices in your region?

  1. Identify the market. Use the price published for the country where you will buy and use the console. Do not treat a converted dollar, euro or yen amount as Nintendo’s official price in another region.
  2. Match the configuration. Japan’s Japanese-Language System and Multi-Language System are distinct examples. Check language support, included items and any regional restrictions before comparing listings.
  3. Separate MSRP from checkout price. Record Nintendo’s current MSRP, then add the retailer’s sales tax, shipping and any handling charges. In Europe, Nintendo’s cited figures include tax; U.S. and Canadian figures in the corporate notice do not.
  4. Check the date. A page showing $449.99 may describe the launch price rather than the U.S. MSRP effective September 1, 2026. Confirm the seller’s current price and the date of the offer.
  5. Compare like-for-like bundles. A lower console price may omit a case, screen protector, storage card or another item included in a higher-priced bundle.

What does a price change mean for the total setup cost?

The console is only one part of a purchase decision. Nintendo’s April 2025 U.S. pricing notice also identified a compatible 256GB Samsung microSD Express card and a Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector among relevant accessories. Accessory prices can change separately from the console MSRP, so calculate the total for the exact setup you need instead of assuming that a console-price change determines every component.

What is the practical takeaway for buyers?

Nintendo has demonstrated that it can revise the Switch 2 MSRP after launch: the U.S. price moved from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. The company’s policy language also allows future adjustments in either direction, but there is no official announcement of a lower price.

If you need the console soon, base the decision on the current price and your region rather than expecting Nintendo to preserve the launch figure. If you can wait, monitor both Nintendo’s regional announcements and retailer promotions, recognizing that waiting can produce either a saving or a higher eventual price.

How we assessed the price question

The answer separates four issues that are often conflated: Nintendo’s official MSRP, the date and region attached to that MSRP, the retailer’s independent checkout price, and the possibility of a future policy change. The documented U.S., Japanese and European revisions establish that post-launch increases are possible; Nintendo’s published wording establishes that additional adjustments, including a decrease, remain possible without promising one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a retailer keep charging the old launch price after Nintendo raises MSRP?

Yes, a retailer may choose its own selling price, including a temporary price below the new MSRP. That is the store’s promotion or pricing decision, not a Nintendo guarantee that the launch price remains available.

Why can two countries show different Switch 2 prices without one being a mistake?

Nintendo evaluates pricing by region, and the figures can include different tax treatment, exchange-rate effects, tariffs and market conditions. The European amount cited by Nintendo includes tax, while the U.S. and Canadian figures in the same notice do not.

Does the 2026 U.S. increase automatically raise accessory prices by the same percentage?

No. Nintendo can revise hardware and accessory prices independently. The company’s 2025 U.S. notice discussed accessory price changes separately from the console, so each item needs its own current listing.

Can I use the Japanese Multi-Language System price as a reference for the Japanese-Language System?

No. Nintendo identified them as different configurations. The May 8, 2026 notice said the Multi-Language System sold through My Nintendo Store remained unchanged, while the Japanese-Language System rose to ¥59,980.
