The latest announcement does not raise the price of the original Nintendo Switch system. Older Switch products did receive a separate Canadian price update in June 2025, which is likely the source of the confusion.
What changed: Switch 2 now has a C$679.99 Canadian MSRP
Nintendo announced on May 7, 2026, that the Nintendo Switch 2 system’s Canadian MSRP would move from C$629.99 to C$679.99 on September 1, 2026. That effective date has passed. The change is C$50, or about 7.9% of the previous MSRP. These are Nintendo’s suggested retail prices, not a guarantee of what every Canadian retailer charges. Nintendo’s price-revision notice gives the official figures and date.

Are older Switch models getting another hike?
No—not in Nintendo’s September 2026 Switch 2 price revision. Nintendo explicitly said, “Pricing for the Nintendo Switch system is not changing.” That statement concerns the original Switch system; it does not say that every Switch-family product, game, accessory, or subscription is exempt from any other pricing change.
The separate 2025 update affected original Switch products
On June 30, 2025, Nintendo announced a Canadian price update covering the original Switch family, including the OLED model, standard Switch, and Switch Lite. The notice also named physical and digital Switch games, accessories, amiibo, and Switch Online memberships. At the time, Nintendo expressly excluded Switch 2 systems, accessories, and software from that update. The announcement is available in Nintendo’s June 2025 pricing notice.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
That history matters, but it is not evidence that older console prices are rising again in September 2026. The newer announcement distinguishes the two: Switch 2’s MSRP changes; original Switch system pricing does not change in that announcement.
Why did Nintendo raise the Switch 2 MSRP?
Nintendo attributed the revision to “various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium to long term.” The company did not identify specific cost drivers or quantify how much any one factor contributed, so the statement does not establish a more detailed explanation for the C$50 increase. Nintendo’s notice is the source for the stated rationale.

MSRP is not the same as the price on a retailer’s page
The C$679.99 figure is Nintendo’s Canadian MSRP for the Switch 2 system. A retailer may list a different price or have different stock, so check Canadian retailers for the current price before buying. Do not treat launch-period pricing or older MSRP lists as current offers.
The distinction also matters for games. Nintendo Support says retailers set their own prices for physical and digital games. In May 2026, Nintendo said new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 would begin carrying an MSRP different from their physical counterparts, starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Nintendo said format cost differences are reflected, while retail partners set their own prices. This is a separate game-pricing policy, not an explanation for the console MSRP revision. How to compare prices before buying
- Check the item type. Make sure a listing is for a Switch 2 system, an original Switch system, a game, an accessory, or a subscription; they are different products with different pricing histories.
- Compare like with like. For games, check whether you are comparing physical and digital editions of the same title.
- Use current Canadian listings. Confirm the retailer, listed price, and availability at the time you shop instead of relying on historical launch MSRP figures.
- Separate announced MSRP from street price. Nintendo’s figure is a suggested price; a retailer’s listing is the amount it is currently offering.
