The Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, and its official specifications now replace the pre-release “leak” framing. Nintendo confirms a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD, up to 4K output on a TV, 256 GB of storage and an estimated 2–6.5 hours of battery life. NVIDIA also confirms dedicated ray-tracing and AI cores in the custom processor; those capabilities do not mean every game uses them or runs at 4K.

Does the Nintendo Switch 2 support ray tracing?
Yes. NVIDIA says the Switch 2’s custom processor has dedicated RT Cores for real-time ray tracing and Tensor Cores that enable DLSS, NVIDIA’s image-scaling technology. NVIDIA describes ray tracing as a way to produce more lifelike lighting, reflections and shadows.
Hardware support is not a promise about an individual game. Developers decide whether and how to use ray tracing or DLSS, and the presence of these features does not establish a game’s frame rate, image quality or resolution. The reviewed official sources do not provide an independent performance benchmark or a measured ray-tracing result for a particular game. See NVIDIA’s April 3, 2025 account for its description of the processor features.

What the screen and 4K TV output mean
The built-in display is 1920×1080, not 4K. Its variable refresh rate can reach 120 Hz, and Nintendo lists HDR10 support. When the console is connected to a TV, supported output goes up to 3840×2160 at 60 fps; at 1080p or 1440p, output can reach 120 fps.
Those are output capabilities, not guarantees that every game renders at the maximum resolution or frame rate. TV output and handheld resolution are separate specifications, so a 4K-capable TV connection does not turn the built-in screen into a 4K display.

Storage, battery life and original Switch compatibility
Storage requires the newer card format
The console has 256 GB of UFS storage, with some capacity reserved for system use. To expand game storage, use a microSD Express card. A standard microSD card from an original Switch is not an expansion option for Switch 2 games; Nintendo says conventional microSD cards can be used to copy screenshots and videos from the original system.
Battery life varies by game
Nintendo estimates 2–6.5 hours of battery life and explicitly describes the figure as a rough estimate that depends on the games played. It is not a fixed runtime for every title or play session.

Most original Switch games may work, but compatibility is not universal
Switch 2 can run compatible original Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or may not be fully compatible. In an April 2025 developer interview, Nintendo said it checked more than 10,000 games one by one; that figure describes the company’s compatibility-checking effort, not a guarantee that every game works perfectly.
Nintendo director Takuhiro Dohta described the approach as “using new technology to run Switch games.” The same interview explains that Switch 2 contains no Switch hardware, so compatibility is achieved through the new system rather than by including the original console’s hardware. Check Nintendo’s compatibility guide for game and accessory details before relying on a specific title or device.

The leak wording refers to a pre-release period; the console is now released and Nintendo has published its specifications. The official sources cited here do not identify which particular leak the old headline meant or establish whether any specific leak accurately predicted the final hardware. The confirmed specifications above should be treated as the authoritative details, not anonymous pre-release claims.
