Short answer: the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is the right $89.99 first-party pad for docked or tabletop players who want a full-size grip, HD Rumble 2, amiibo support, GameChat controls, rear GL/GR buttons and a 3.5 mm headset jack. It works only with Nintendo Switch 2, although an original Switch Pro Controller can be paired with the newer console. Handheld-first players, owners who already have the old Pro Controller, and buyers seeking Hall-effect or TMR sticks can spend less elsewhere.
Nintendo released the controller on June 5, 2025. The standard model is listed at $89.99 in the United States and ¥9,980 tax included in Japan; regional street prices and special-edition stock change frequently.

What is the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller?
It is Nintendo’s full-size wireless controller for Switch 2, shaped for conventional two-stick play in TV and tabletop modes. Nintendo’s US product listing identifies it as SKU 123674 (UPC 00045496885861) and says, “Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” A USB-C charging cable is included.
The controller combines Bluetooth and NFC, an accelerometer and gyroscope, HD Rumble 2, a Capture Button, HOME and SYNC buttons, a D-pad, clickable analog sticks and the new C, GL and GR controls. Nintendo Japan describes a seamless body and quieter stick operation, but Nintendo has not published a decibel measurement.

How much does the Switch 2 Pro Controller cost?
The current official list price depends on region and edition. The figures below are listings checked in October 2026, not guarantees of today’s checkout price.
| Market or edition | Price and status |
|---|---|
| United States, standard black model | $89.99 Regular Price on Nintendo’s US store listings |
| Japan, standard model | ¥9,980 tax included suggested retail price |
| Europe, Amazon.de offer | €63.99 promotional price versus a €74.90 comparison price on October 25, 2026; treat this as a dated deal, not Nintendo’s euro MSRP |
| Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition, US | $99.99 Regular Price; Nintendo’s US listing showed sold out during the October 2026 check |
| Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition, Japan | ¥12,980 tax included on October 29, 2026 |
| Resident Evil Requiem Edition, Japan | ¥11,980 tax included; released February 27, 2026 |
The standard US price is $89.99, not the $84.99 launch-era figure often repeated in older reviews. Japanese buyers saw the standard controller at ¥9,980 on Amazon.co.jp on October 26, 2026, sold and shipped by Amazon. Special editions use the same core hardware; the premium pays for the finish and collectability. The Zelda version carries a $10 US or ¥3,000 Japanese premium over the standard model.

The meaningful upgrade is a cluster of controls and connectivity features rather than a new layout.
C Button and GameChat
Pressing C opens the GameChat menu at any time. Nintendo says online GameChat requires internet access, a Nintendo Switch Online membership sold separately and a Nintendo Account; availability varies by country and terms apply. Video chat additionally requires a Switch 2 Camera or compatible USB-C webcam.
GL and GR rear buttons
GL and GR are rear grip buttons that can be mapped to another button. The system path described in Nintendo’s button-mapping guidance is System Settings → Controllers and Accessories → Change Button Mapping. Power, HOME, Volume and SYNC cannot be assigned through that mapping screen.
Headset jack
The 4-pole stereo 3.5 mm mini jack follows the CTIA standard and is intended for headphones and headsets. The Verge’s May 2026 coverage called this the only wireless Switch 2 controller with a 3.5 mm jack at that time; that assessment can change if a later licensed model adds one.

HD Rumble 2, NFC and motion
HD Rumble 2 is Nintendo’s stronger, heavier and sharper vibration system according to the Japanese specification description. Built-in NFC lets the controller read amiibo (figures are not included), while the accelerometer and gyroscope support motion aiming and steering.
Does the Switch 2 Pro Controller work with the original Switch?
No. Nintendo Support’s answer is explicit: the Switch 2 Pro Controller is only for Nintendo Switch 2. It cannot be used as a wireless or wired controller on an original Nintendo Switch.
The compatibility direction is one-way. Nintendo says many original Switch accessories work with Switch 2, and Nintendo’s buying guidance confirms that an original Switch Pro Controller can be paired with Switch 2. That makes the older pad a viable option when C, GL/GR and the headset jack are not important.
Can I use my old Pro Controller on Switch 2?
Yes. Pair the original Switch Pro Controller wirelessly, or connect it through the Switch 2 dock while the console is docked, then follow the console’s controller-pairing prompt. Nintendo Support allows up to eight wireless controllers at once, although the practical maximum depends on controller type, enabled features and the game.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Games can impose their own controller requirements, so Nintendo Japan advises checking each game’s official support page. The old Pro does not gain the new controller’s C, GL/GR, 3.5 mm audio or HD Rumble 2 hardware.
How long does the battery last and how is it charged?
Nintendo estimates about 40 hours from the internal 1,070 mAh lithium-ion battery. Runtime varies with use, especially rumble, wireless audio and motion features. The battery is not user-removable.

Nintendo Japan and Nintendo Support Australia list approximately three hours for a full charge. Nintendo Singapore’s specification sheet lists approximately 3.5 hours, so allow roughly three to three and a half hours rather than treating one regional figure as universal. Charging uses the included USB-C cable or a Switch 2 AC adapter.
Does it have Hall-effect sticks?
Nintendo does not advertise Hall-effect or TMR sensors for this controller and has published no stick-drift failure rate. The Verge described the sticks as potentiometer-based and warned that such joysticks can degrade over time, but that is independent review reporting rather than a Nintendo specification.
If magnetic-stick technology is your priority, several alternatives advertise Hall-effect or TMR modules. They can trade away Nintendo’s native feature integration, so choose based on whether drift resistance or the complete Switch 2 feature set matters more.
How does it compare with Joy-Con 2?
Joy-Con 2 remain the better tool for handheld use, split multiplayer and games that require mouse controls. Their optical sensors on the rails provide cursor-style control; the Pro Controller cannot substitute when a game forces mouse input.
| Consideration | Switch 2 Pro Controller | Joy-Con 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | One full-size grip, about 235 g | Two detachable units; about 66 g each according to Pocket Tactics |
| Mouse controls | Not available | Available through the rail sensors |
| Battery figure | About 40 hours, Nintendo estimate | About 20 hours, Pocket Tactics figure |
| GameChat | Dedicated C Button | Right Joy-Con 2 has C Button |
| Japan price | ¥9,980 | ¥9,980 for an L/R set; ¥5,480 per individual unit |
| Grip accessory | Grip is built in | Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip is $39.99 US or ¥3,980 Japan and requires Joy-Con 2 |
For a docked player who wants a traditional controller and rear buttons, the Pro is the clearer choice. For a handheld-first player, the Joy-Con 2 already supplied with the console may make a separate $89.99 purchase unnecessary.
What is different from the original Switch Pro Controller?
The old Pro Controller remains a capable full-size pad and now has a practical second life on Switch 2. The new model’s decisive additions are the C Button, mappable GL/GR buttons and a 3.5 mm headset jack; Nintendo also specifies HD Rumble 2 on the new hardware.

PowerA Advantage Wireless Controller
Nintendo’s US store lists this officially licensed Switch 2 controller at $69.99. Product and marketplace descriptions advertise Hall-effect sticks, mappable extra buttons, motion controls, a C Button and up to 30 hours of battery life. It is a strong middle-price choice when magnetic sticks matter, but verify the current feature list and firmware requirements for the exact revision.
HORIPAD Turbo
Nintendo’s US related listing gives the wireless HORIPAD Turbo a $39.99 Regular Price. A Japanese comparison listed the wireless model at about ¥6,509 and the wired model at about ¥3,845; both compared versions omit vibration, amiibo and sleep-wake, and the wired model uses an approximately three-metre USB cable. It suits a budget second pad, especially for local multiplayer, rather than buyers seeking full Nintendo feature parity.
EasySMX S10 and S10 Lite
The S10 is reported at roughly $40–$60 with TMR sticks, NFC, HD-style rumble, two rear buttons, wake support and compatibility with Switch 2, original Switch, PC, Steam Deck and mobile. It does not provide native Switch 2 OS support. The less expensive S10 Lite, around $35–$40, can use Switch 2’s own interface to map rear buttons and remembers the console without a special pairing routine, but gives up NFC and HD rumble.

8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth and Ultimate 2C
Pocket Tactics identifies Ultimate 2 Bluetooth as a leading third-party option because of its charging dock, extra buttons and PC/mobile support; a firmware update is required for Switch 2, and sleep-wake is listed as supported after initial setup. A Japanese Amazon listing showed ¥8,622 on October 26, 2026. Ultimate 2C is the budget model with Hall-effect sticks, about 15 hours of battery life and a price under $30 at the time of that guide.
GuliKit models
The TT Pro is described by The Verge as using TMR sticks, adjustable stick tension, up to four rear paddles and wake support. A Japanese listing for the Elves 2 Pro showed ¥5,501, HD vibration and wake after a firmware update on system version 20.3.0 or later. Firmware and feature support vary by model, so these are value alternatives rather than guaranteed replicas of Nintendo’s integration.

How does the GameCube controller compare?
Nintendo’s Switch 2 GameCube Controller costs $69.99 in the US and keeps the classic GameCube layout, with a C Button for GameChat and a Capture Button. It is aimed at GameCube Nintendo Switch Online titles and nostalgia-focused play, not as a replacement for the Pro Controller’s symmetrical dual-stick layout. Pocket Tactics notes that some games, including Mario Kart World, can require button-mapping adjustments with the GameCube design.
How do I set up and map the controller?
- Charge the controller with the included USB-C cable or a Switch 2 AC adapter. A full charge is specified as about three hours by Nintendo Japan and Nintendo Support Australia, or about 3.5 hours by Nintendo Singapore.
- For wireless pairing, open the Switch 2 controller controls and use the controller’s SYNC button when the console asks for a new wireless device. With the console docked, connecting the controller by USB-C to the dock is Nintendo’s other stated registration route.
- After pairing, open System Settings → Controllers and Accessories → Change Button Mapping.
- Select the Pro Controller, choose GL or GR, assign the desired button and save the profile. The system does not permit remapping Power, HOME, Volume or SYNC.
- For GameChat, press C to open the menu. Online functions still depend on internet access, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online where available; video chat needs a camera or compatible webcam.
Who should buy it and who should skip it?
Buy it when you:
- Play mainly docked or tabletop and want a substantial, conventional grip.
- Use GameChat, a wired headset, amiibo or HD Rumble 2.
- Want two rear buttons mapped through Nintendo’s system settings.
- Prefer Nintendo’s own wake and pairing path without third-party firmware steps.
Skip or delay it when you:
- Own only the original Switch; this controller is incompatible.
- Mostly play handheld with the included Joy-Con 2.
- Already own an original Pro Controller and do not need C, GL/GR or the audio jack.
- Specifically want Hall-effect or TMR sticks, or analog triggers; Nintendo’s ZL and ZR are digital buttons according to review coverage.
- Need mouse controls, which are a Joy-Con 2 feature.
- Need a low-cost second pad; a wired turbo controller or a value third-party model costs less.
How we picked the recommendations
The ranking uses Nintendo’s published compatibility, feature and specification information first, then dated price listings and named editorial comparisons. The main criteria are Switch 2 feature completeness, price, stick technology, wake and operating-system support, cross-generation or PC compatibility, form factor and suitability for docked, tabletop, handheld or GameCube-style play. No performance figures here are based on testing by this site.

Can the Pro Controller battery be replaced?
The 1,070 mAh lithium-ion cell is not user-removable. Nintendo Japan says battery replacement is available through Nintendo service for a fee, so the controller should not be opened by the owner.

Nintendo specifies a four-pole CTIA stereo mini plug but does not guarantee compatibility with every headset. If a microphone is important, check its plug standard and Nintendo’s current support list before buying.
Can I use the controller with a phone, Xbox or PlayStation?
Nintendo’s product specification lists Switch 2 compatibility only and does not promise support for phones, Xbox, PlayStation or PC. Independent reports of unofficial computer recognition are not a Nintendo-supported feature.
How many controllers can a Switch 2 use at once?
Nintendo Support says up to eight wireless controllers can be paired to one console. The number that can operate simultaneously can be lower depending on controller type, active features and the game.
