The safest way to move from a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED to Switch 2 is to start System Transfer during the new console’s initial setup. Use the local transfer when both consoles are available: it connects them directly and avoids resetting the old system. Use Nintendo’s server transfer only when the old console must be traded in, sold or otherwise leaves first. Before confirming, check each household user’s important saves, because transfer rules differ by save type and some settings, captures and accessories do not carry over.
“Move everything” is useful shorthand, not a promise that Switch 2 becomes an identical copy. Purchased digital games are downloaded again, certain preferences must be re-entered, and save retention depends on the user, the game and the transfer method. Treat the first setup screen as the point at which you choose the outcome you want.

What should I do before turning on Switch 2?
Have both consoles, their power supplies, a reliable internet connection and the Nintendo Account credentials used on the old system ready. At least one old-console user must be linked to that Nintendo Account, and every household user should identify saves that cannot be replaced.
- Update the old Switch when prompted and leave it powered on and near the Switch 2.
- Move as much data as possible from the old microSD card to the old console’s system memory before starting.
- Keep the old microSD card available if you need to import screenshots or videos later.
- Do not initialize, trade in or erase the old console until you understand the selected transfer method.
- Make sure users can sign in to their Nintendo Accounts; Switch 2 will ask for those accounts during setup.
- Ask every person who uses the console about important saves, including games that do not support Save Data Cloud.
- Put both systems on power for the entire process. A transfer, restart and game redownload can take considerably longer than the initial account setup.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi connection. The consoles communicate locally for the direct transfer, but account checks, updates and software downloads still need internet access.
A full System Transfer is offered in the Switch 2 setup flow. It is not a routine menu command that can be started later without consequences. If the old console contains data on a conventional microSD card, Nintendo recommends moving as much as possible to system storage first; retain the card separately so you can bring over captures after the transfer.

How do I set up the new console?
Connect the supplied Switch 2 USB-C power adapter, attach both Joy-Con 2 controllers and follow the on-screen prompts for language, region, internet, time zone and user setup.
- Connect the Switch 2 AC adapter and power on the console.
- Pair the Joy-Con 2 controllers when the setup screen requests them.
- Join your wireless network and install any required system update.
- When System Transfer appears, choose Start System Transfer if you are moving from an existing Switch.
- Insert a microSD Express card if you want expanded Switch 2 game storage, or skip that step. Storage expansion is optional.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account that is linked to the source user. Other household users can be added as the prompts request.
For television use, use the Switch 2 AC adapter and the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. The older Switch adapter cannot power the Switch 2 dock for TV mode. If you are setting up in handheld mode first, keep the supplied adapter nearby because the old adapter is not the correct solution for docked TV operation.

You can choose whether software and album media are handled automatically during the transfer prompts, then leave Switch 2 connected until downloads finish. See Nintendo’s transfer guide.
Which transfer method should I choose?
Choose local transfer when both consoles are in front of you. Choose server transfer when the old console must leave before the new one is set up. If Switch 2 is already configured, use a selected-save transfer or Save Data Cloud instead of casually starting over.
| Method | When to use it | Old-console result | Save and timing considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local System Transfer | Both consoles are available | The old system is not factory-reset as a whole | Save treatment depends on whether the save is cloud-supported, linked to a user and supported by the game; all users participate |
| Server System Transfer | The old console will be traded in, sold or unavailable | The old system is initialized after upload | Retrieve the upload during Switch 2 setup by the displayed Download Deadline; Nintendo describes storage for up to one year |
| Nearby individual save transfer | Switch 2 setup is already complete and you need selected saves | The selected source save is deleted | No Nintendo Switch Online membership is required; a target save can be overwritten |
| Save Data Cloud | A supported game has a cloud backup | The source console remains usable | Requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and game support |
The table’s most important distinction is reversibility. Local transfer lets you keep the old hardware while you verify the result, although individual save categories can still be removed. Server transfer is intended for a console that is leaving your possession. Nearby transfer is narrower and acts on the selected save rather than the whole household. Cloud restoration is a backup option, not a replacement for checking whether a particular game supports cloud saves.
Read Nintendo’s detailed US rules at System Transfers to Nintendo Switch 2 before confirming. The detailed explanation is more useful than a blanket statement about every source save being deleted: cloud-backup-supported saves for linked users remain on the old console and are copied, while saves belonging to unlinked users and games without Save Data Cloud support are moved and removed from the source. Because the categories matter, check every valued save first.
How do I transfer locally when both consoles are available?
Keep the systems close together, connected to power and online. Start the transfer on Switch 2 during initial setup, then use the old console’s System Settings path. Do not shut either system down when the screens appear to pause; the process may include a connection step, a restart and a separate download step.
- On Switch 2, sign in with the same Nintendo Account linked to the source user and leave the receiving screen open.
- On the old Switch, open System Settings > System > System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2.
- Follow the prompts to connect the consoles.
- Choose whether to automatically redownload software and whether to transfer album media when those options appear.
- Confirm the participating users and review any warning about saves that will move or be removed from the source.
- On Switch 2, choose Start Download when prompted.
- Wait through the restart and allow setup to finish before disconnecting either system.
Menu wording can vary with system software. A local transfer is not a universal copy operation: save behavior is determined by the account and game category described in Nintendo’s support instructions. A user who is not linked to the expected Nintendo Account should stop and correct the account association rather than proceeding on the assumption that the profile will be fixed later.

How do I transfer if the old Switch must leave first?
Use the server method only when you accept that the old console will be initialized and will not remain a playable backup. This is the appropriate path for a trade-in, sale, gift or situation in which the source console cannot be physically present during Switch 2 setup.
- On the old console, open System Settings > System > System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2.
- Choose I don’t have a Nintendo Switch 2 yet, or the equivalent option for transferring to another system.
- Read and record the displayed Download Deadline. Photographing the screen is sensible if several people share responsibility for the setup.
- Upload the household data and review the factory-reset warning.
- Initialize the old console only after every user is ready and the upload has completed.
- During Switch 2’s initial setup, sign in with the same Nintendo Account and retrieve the upload before the deadline.
Nintendo states that server storage is available for up to one year, but the individual deadline shown on your consoles controls. Do not calculate a date yourself or assume the upload remains available indefinitely. Once the source has been initialized, you cannot use it as a second playable copy while waiting for the download.

A complete System Transfer requires the target Switch 2 to be in its initial setup. If setup is already finished, repeating a full transfer means initializing the target and starting setup again. That reset is the reason to decide on local or server transfer before creating a finished Switch 2 profile.
To avoid that reset, use How to Transfer Your Save Data To a Nearby Console for selected saves, or use Save Data Cloud where the game supports it and your Nintendo Switch Online membership is active. Nearby transfer moves one selected save at a time, deletes that save from the source and can overwrite an existing save on Switch 2. Confirm the destination user and game before accepting the overwrite. Nintendo documents the nearby procedure at its transfer support page.
Nearby transfer is useful when only one or two games matter, when the target is already in daily use, or when a full household move is unnecessary. It is not a way to preserve a second copy of the selected source save. Nintendo Switch Online is not required for this nearby method; membership is relevant only to the optional cloud-backup route.
What moves, and what must I set up again?
Digital purchases are associated with the Nintendo Accounts and are redownloaded after the transfer. System-memory screenshots and videos, user information and various parental-control and network settings can transfer, but Switch 2 is not an exact image of the old console.

Will my saves stay on the old Switch?
There is no single answer for every save. In a local transfer, Nintendo’s detailed US guidance distinguishes cloud-supported saves for linked users from saves tied to unlinked users or games without Save Data Cloud support. The first category remains on the old console and is copied; the latter categories are moved and removed from the old console. All users are included in the full transfer.

Server transfer is different: the old console is initialized after uploading. If keeping a usable old-console copy matters, do not choose the server method. Before either method, open each important game and verify which user owns its save and whether Save Data Cloud supports it. For a family console, do this user by user rather than assuming one linked account describes every profile.
Nintendo’s support wording includes a broad statement that can sound as if every source save disappears. The more specific category-by-category instructions are the safer way to plan: cloud-backup-supported saves for linked users are copied while remaining on the old system, whereas unlinked-user saves and saves from games without cloud support are moved and removed. When a save is irreplaceable, record the user, game and intended destination before confirming.

Will my Animal Crossing: New Horizons island transfer?
For the United States, Nintendo’s game-specific instructions say a Switch-to-Switch-2 System Transfer also transfers the Animal Crossing: New Horizons island save. If Switch 2 has already been set up, Nintendo documents a separate Island Transfer Tool route; a normal individual save transfer should not be treated as an island transfer.
Animal Crossing is different from an ordinary single-user save because an island can include several residents. Nintendo’s Singapore instructions describe linking each transferred resident to the original user after a local transfer. An Australian article instead says shared Animal Crossing saves cannot move by system transfer. This article follows the US instructions for US owners; check the support page for your region before acting, especially if household residents use different accounts.
Do not delete the old island or hand over the old console until the island, residents and expected user associations are visible on Switch 2. If the new console has already completed setup, follow Nintendo’s dedicated Island Transfer Tool instructions rather than trying to force the island through a one-save nearby transfer. See Nintendo’s US Animal Crossing transfer information.
Can I use my old microSD card in Switch 2?
An old conventional Switch microSD card cannot become expanded Switch 2 game storage. You can use it to bring over old screenshots and videos, but ongoing expanded storage requires a microSD Express card.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNintendo lists support for microSD Express cards up to 2TB. The Nintendo accessory page names a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card; capacity is a product specification, not a requirement. The important label is microSD Express, not merely microSD or microSDXC. Expanded storage is optional, so do not buy a card unless you need more installed-game space.
Keep the old card after the transfer if it contains captures. It is useful for a one-time album import, but it should not be treated as the card on which Switch 2 will maintain expanded game storage. If you buy an Express card, follow the console’s formatting and setup prompts; do not assume that an old card’s installed game data can simply be launched from it.

What should I check after the transfer?
- Open every user profile and confirm the expected Nintendo Account is attached.
- Check the library and start redownloading digital games; leave the console online until downloads finish.
- Open the games with valuable saves and verify the correct user and progress.
- Open Album and confirm the captures you chose to transfer.
- Pair Bluetooth audio again and restore custom controller mappings.
- Review time, language and region preferences and set them again if needed.
- Reconnect accessories and verify TV output with the Switch 2 adapter and dock.
- Check parental-control and network settings, even when they appear to have transferred.
- Keep the old console untouched until these checks pass if you used local transfer.
- If you used server transfer, confirm the download completed before relying on the newly initialized source-free setup.
Start with the games that contain the most valuable progress rather than checking only whether icons appear on the Home Menu. A downloaded game with the wrong user or an empty save is a transfer problem even if the software itself installed correctly.
What are the common mistakes?
- Finishing setup before deciding: a full transfer later requires initializing Switch 2. Use nearby save transfer instead if you cannot accept that reset.
- Trading in the old system too early: server transfer must be uploaded and retrieved by its displayed deadline.
- Assuming every save is copied: ownership, cloud support and game behavior determine retention.
- Failing to check unlinked users: saves for unlinked users follow different local-transfer treatment and can be removed from the source.
- Using the wrong card: an old microSD card is for capture import, not Switch 2 game expansion.
- Expecting instant play: digital software redownloads need internet bandwidth and time.
- Interrupting a restart: wait for the transfer and download stages to finish before disconnecting either console.
- Ignoring regional Animal Crossing guidance: US, Singapore and Australian instructions differ.
- Using the old dock adapter: Switch 2 TV mode requires the supplied Switch 2 adapter.
- Assuming preferences are cloned: Bluetooth pairings, custom button mappings and time, language and region settings must be checked again.
- Deleting captures prematurely: keep the old card and source console until album media has been verified.
How did Nintendo’s transfer choices shape this procedure?
The decision points are the ones that affect irreversible outcomes: whether both consoles are present, whether the old console is initialized, whether selected saves are deleted, whether the target setup has already been completed, and whether storage media is compatible. Those criteria put local full transfer first for households holding both systems, server transfer second for trade-ins, and individual save or cloud methods only when a full initial-setup transfer is no longer suitable.
The practical order is therefore simple: prepare accounts and saves, start the transfer before finishing Switch 2 setup, choose local while both consoles are available, use server only when the source must leave, then verify profiles, saves, captures and downloads before disposing of anything. That sequence avoids the two costliest mistakes: resetting the target unexpectedly and losing access to a source console before its data is safely retrieved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to move everything?
No membership is required for the nearby save-transfer function or for a local full System Transfer. Nintendo Switch Online is needed only when you rely on the optional Save Data Cloud route, and the individual game must support cloud backup.
Can I keep using the old console after a local transfer?
The old console is not factory-reset as a whole by the local method, but save availability depends on the save category and user-link status. Verify important games before deleting anything or handing the system to someone else.
What happens if a digital game does not appear immediately?
The transfer associates purchases with the relevant Nintendo Accounts, then Switch 2 redownloads the software. Connect to the internet, open the software-redownload process and allow the download to finish before troubleshooting compatibility.
Do screenshots on a conventional microSD card automatically become Switch 2 game storage?
No. The old card can help bring captures to the new console, but Switch 2 expanded game storage uses microSD Express. You may continue without any expansion card if the internal storage is sufficient.

Can I perform the full transfer after Switch 2 setup is complete?
Only by initializing the target Switch 2 and repeating initial setup. If you want to keep the current setup, transfer selected saves nearby or restore supported cloud backups instead.
What happens to the old console in a server transfer?
After the upload, the old console is initialized. It is not left as a playable backup, and the upload must be retrieved by the Download Deadline shown on the consoles; Nintendo describes storage for up to one year.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Will every household user move in a full transfer?
All users participate in a full transfer, but save treatment depends on whether each user is linked to the expected Nintendo Account and whether each game supports Save Data Cloud. Check every user’s important saves before confirming.
Does my Animal Crossing island use the ordinary save-transfer process?
For US owners, Nintendo says a Switch-to-Switch-2 System Transfer transfers the Animal Crossing: New Horizons island. If Switch 2 is already set up, use the separate Island Transfer Tool. Regional instructions differ, so consult the guide for your region.
Do I need a microSD Express card?
No. It is optional expanded storage. An old conventional microSD card can help import screenshots and videos, but Switch 2 game expansion requires microSD Express; Nintendo lists support up to 2TB.
Which settings must I redo?
Bluetooth audio pairings, custom button mappings, and time, language and region preferences do not transfer. Reconnect audio and restore those preferences after the games and users are confirmed.
The Bottom Line
Start System Transfer during Switch 2’s initial setup. Use local transfer while both consoles are available; use server transfer only when the old console must leave and you accept its initialization. Verify every important save, then let games redownload and check captures, accounts and settings before erasing or trading in anything.
