In February 2025, reports described a purported offer of an unreleased Nintendo Switch 2 for about $39,780—often rounded to $40,000. They did not confirm that the seller possessed the console or that anyone completed a sale. The figure is a reported asking price from screenshots, not a verified black-market transaction or a current market price.
What the February 2025 reports said
Nintendo Wire reported on February 14, 2025, that screenshots shared by a Xiaohongshu user showed a purported seller asking ¥290,000 RMB, converted in its coverage to approximately $39,780. The reported package included the console, dock, and Joy-Con. The outlet said there was no confirmation that the source had the unit in hand. Nintendo Wire’s report therefore documents what the screenshots were said to show, not a verified sale.

Tom’s Hardware reported the following day that a Chinese leaker, who had previously posted Switch 2 CAD images, claimed a seller offered a functioning unit to an accessory manufacturer for about $39,800. Its account also described a console, dock, and Joy-Con, and urged readers to treat the claim skeptically. Tom’s Hardware’s report does not independently establish the seller’s inventory or a completed transaction.

- Reported: An offer of ¥290,000, described in coverage as about $39,780 or $39,800—hence the rounded $40,000 headline.
- Reported package: The console, dock, and Joy-Con.
- Not confirmed: That the seller had a working console in hand, or that a buyer paid the asking price and received one.
- Speculation, not established motive: Tom’s Hardware’s account connected the purported offer to an accessory manufacturer and possible testing. That explanation does not prove why the offer was made or that the hardware existed.
The two articles corroborate that the claim circulated in February 2025; they do not turn the screenshot-based allegation into proof of a real transaction. The reports appeared before the Switch 2’s release, so the story should be understood as a pre-release rumor rather than evidence of what the console sells for now.

How the rumor compares with Nintendo’s current US listing
Nintendo of America’s product page, checked October 8, 2026, lists official bundle prices that provide retail context—not confirmation of the earlier claim.
| Listing | Price and availability shown | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle | $549.99 MSRP | An official US bundle listing; it does not validate the purported 2025 offer. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 + Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle | $529.99 MSRP; listed as available October 22, 2026 | A separate official US bundle listing with a stated availability date; it does not validate the purported 2025 offer. |
These prices and availability details are from Nintendo’s US Switch 2 product page as checked October 8, 2026; listings can change. The official bundle MSRPs and the alleged pre-release asking price are different kinds of evidence, not competing offers in a current market comparison.

Bottom line on the $40,000 headline
The accurate takeaway is that outlets reported a purported pre-release offer of roughly $39,780 in February 2025. The available reporting did not establish that the seller had the console or that a sale occurred. Calling it a confirmed $40,000 black-market sale goes beyond what those reports show.
