Buy the standard Switch 2 if you only care about playing Zelda; choose the Zelda 40th Anniversary console if its design is worth the premium and you can confirm a legitimate seller has it available. The anniversary console is separate from the enhanced Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom games—and Nintendo says it does not include a game. If you already own either original Switch game, you can upgrade that game rather than buy it again.
“Zelda Edition” can mean two different things here: a Zelda-themed Switch 2 console or a Switch 2 Edition of a Zelda game. They are separate purchases and solve different needs. The console changes the system’s appearance; the game editions add features to two existing adventures. Neither choice determines which game you should play first.

What are the Nintendo Switch 2 Zelda editions?
The Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition is themed hardware. Nintendo’s September 8, 2026 announcement describes Triforce motifs on the system, dock and Joy-Con 2 controllers, and explicitly states: “This product does not come with a game.” Its Japan package includes the system, decorated Joy-Con 2 controllers and straps, a decorated dock, grip, adapter, USB-C charging cable and HDMI cable. Nintendo’s announcement gives October 29, 2026 as its Japan release date and identifies that announced system as Japanese-language and Japan-only.
The two Switch 2 Edition games are enhanced versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo dates both editions to June 5, 2025. They are game purchases or upgrades, not special consoles. Conversely, buying the anniversary console does not provide either game.

Which Switch 2 should you buy?
For a Zelda player who does not care about the exterior, the standard Switch 2 is the practical choice. Choose the anniversary model for its design only if its premium is acceptable and you can verify that the exact regional product is actually available.

At the time of the October 30, 2026 observation, Best Buy listed the U.S. anniversary console at $519.99 and its ordinary Switch 2 at $499.99—a $20 difference between those two listed prices. These are retailer listings, not a universal price guarantee. More importantly, Best Buy’s anniversary listing said “Coming Soon,” with shipping and pickup unavailable, despite also showing an October 29 release date. A dated product page is not proof you can buy or receive a console today. Check the retailer listing for current fulfillment status before deciding.

Which Zelda game should you choose?
Start with Breath of the Wild if you want the first game in the sequence; Tears of the Kingdom is its sequel. The sequel expands the adventure across Hyrule’s land, sky and depths. Pick based on whether you want to begin at the start or return to a world you already know—not on a supposed performance win for one edition.

Nintendo advertises the same categories of Switch 2 improvements for both games: higher resolution, improved frame rates, HDR, faster loading, a second save file and ZELDA NOTES through the Nintendo Switch App. Those are qualitative feature descriptions, not comparable mode-by-mode measurements. The available product information does not establish a tested frame rate or 4K target for either game, so there is no sound basis here to claim that one runs at a particular rate or looks better than the other.
HDR in TV mode requires a compatible display. ZELDA NOTES requires a Nintendo Account, a compatible smart device and a persistent internet connection; Nintendo warns that data charges may apply. These are additions to the game experience, not reasons to treat the console and game editions as one package.

Do you need to buy a Zelda game again if you own the Switch version?
No. If you own the original Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, you can keep that game and obtain the corresponding Switch 2 upgrade. The upgrade for one title does not include the other title, so a person who owns both originals needs to consider each game’s route separately.
For a U.S. price illustration observed at Best Buy in 2026, each separate digital upgrade pack was listed at $9.99. Nintendo Support independently lists the U.S. Tears of the Kingdom upgrade at $9.99. The same retailer listed complete Switch 2 Edition purchases at $69.99 for Breath of the Wild and $79.99 for Tears of the Kingdom. These dated prices can change; compare the current price and exact edition before purchase. If you own the base game, paying for a full replacement copy is generally unnecessary just to get the Switch 2 enhancements.

There is also a membership route: an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack member who owns the underlying game can access its upgrade at no additional charge while eligible. The membership itself is paid, and this is not the same as permanently purchasing an upgrade. Nintendo Support distinguishes a separately bought Tears of the Kingdom pack, which is treated as a virtual game card, from membership-provided access, which is not and is restricted to eligible members. Check the current membership terms and your account eligibility before relying on that route. What is included on a physical Switch 2 Edition game card?
Nintendo says the physical Switch 2 Edition card contains both the original game and the upgrade. Inserted into an original Switch, it plays the original version without the Switch 2 enhancements. That makes the complete card a straightforward option for someone who has not bought the game before and wants a physical copy, while an existing owner can compare the cost of an upgrade instead of buying the full edition.
Existing saves from the original game can be carried to Switch 2. Nintendo has also corrected earlier inaccurate information: these games do support cloud-save backup on Switch 2. Each enhanced game adds a second save file, but that new second file cannot be transferred back to play in the original Switch version. If you plan to move between systems, keep that distinction in mind: the original save and the newly created second save do not have identical transfer behavior.
One notable content caveat applies to Breath of the Wild: its Expansion Pass DLC is not included in the Switch 2 Edition. It remains a separate purchase and can be played on Switch 2 with or without the Switch 2 Edition. Do not assume that buying the enhanced edition automatically supplies that additional content.

How much storage do the game editions need?
Nintendo of America’s 2026 listings give advertised file sizes of 24.1 GB for the Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition and 20.1 GB for Tears of the Kingdom. Those are listed game sizes, not measurements made for this article. If you are deciding between digital downloads, consider the space available on your console and any applicable storage expansion; check the current product listing because file sizes and requirements can be updated.

If you already own a Switch 2 and mainly want a Zelda-themed item, the separately sold anniversary Pro Controller or carrying case may be a more proportionate choice than replacing a working console. They are accessories, not a way to turn a standard system into the anniversary edition, and neither comes with a game.

Zelda-series amiibo are another optional extra, not a requirement to enjoy compatible games. Nintendo advertises amiibo support and notes that amiibo are not needed to enjoy compatible games. Treat them as a separate collectible or optional feature, not part of the anniversary console or the Switch 2 Edition purchase.

What is the simplest buying decision?
First decide whether you are shopping for hardware or software. If you need a console, compare the standard and anniversary hardware based on design value, the observed price difference and confirmed fulfillment—not on an assumption that the Zelda model includes a game. If you already have a Switch 2, skip the console comparison and choose the game you want.
For software, decide whether you want the first adventure or its sequel, then check whether you already own that specific original game. New buyers can compare the full physical or digital Switch 2 Edition; existing owners can compare the separate upgrade pack with eligible membership access. If physical ownership matters, Nintendo says the Switch 2 Edition card includes both the base game and upgrade.
