Yes. Nintendo reported that the original Nintendo Switch had reached 155.37 million units in cumulative sell-in through December 31, 2025, surpassing the Nintendo DS and becoming the highest-selling hardware system in Nintendo’s history. That is a Nintendo hardware record—not a ranking across every console maker.

How many Switch systems has Nintendo sold?

Nintendo’s February 3, 2026 investor presentation reported 155.37 million Nintendo Switch units in cumulative sell-in through December 31, 2025. Nintendo said the total had surpassed Nintendo DS and was the highest sales volume of any Nintendo hardware. Nintendo’s third-quarter FY2026 results presentation is the source for that dated figure.

“Sell-in” is not the same as a count of individual customers or a pure retail sell-through total. Nintendo defines sell-in as sales by the Nintendo group to outside entities, including business partners and consumers who buy directly through Nintendo’s websites. The 155.37 million figure therefore describes Nintendo’s reported sales measure, not the number of people who bought a console.

How does Switch compare with Nintendo DS?

System Reported hardware total Period and qualification
Nintendo Switch 155.37 million Nintendo-reported cumulative sell-in through December 31, 2025; reported in February 2026.
Nintendo DS 154.02 million Nintendo’s published worldwide lifetime hardware figure; its historical page marks the data as of December 31, 2016.

Nintendo’s historical hardware sales page lists the DS at 154.02 million units. Comparing Nintendo’s published figures, Switch is ahead by 1.35 million. The DS figure comes from a page dated to 2016, while the Switch figure is a later cumulative sell-in report; these are the company’s stated benchmarks, not a fresh, same-date audit of both systems.

Is Switch the best-selling console of all time?

It is Nintendo’s best-selling hardware system, based on Nintendo’s reported figures. That does not establish that Switch is the best-selling console across all manufacturers: the cited comparison is between Nintendo systems, and Nintendo’s statement is specifically about its own hardware.

Does Switch 2 change the record?

No. Nintendo’s Switch 2 claim concerns launch speed, not lifetime volume. Nintendo of America said Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days after launching on June 5, 2025, calling it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system ever. That short launch window is a different measure from the original Switch’s cumulative total. Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement describes the launch-period result.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

The original Switch and Switch 2 are separate products; Nintendo’s Switch-family product page covers the original Switch family, including standard and Lite models. The record discussed here is for Nintendo Switch hardware, not Switch 2.

Why isn’t there a newer cumulative total here?

Nintendo’s FY2026 results, published May 8, 2026, report 3.80 million Switch hardware units sold during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. That is an annual figure, not a cumulative lifetime total. The results do not provide a directly comparable cumulative figure in the cited material, so adding the annual figure to the December 2025 total would produce an estimate rather than a reported total.
