Nintendo Switch child safety is split across three places, not one master switch. Use the supervising parent’s Nintendo Account for purchases, eShop visibility, Friend Suggestions and third-party data sharing; the console’s Parental Controls for age ratings and in-game communication; and the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for play-time tools and, on Switch 2, GameChat approvals. Account controls follow the supervised profile, while most console communication limits apply to everyone using that console. The separate Nintendo Switch App has its own 13-and-over voice-chat rule. The guide below shows exactly which setting handles spending, privacy, friend features and chat on the original Switch and what changes on Switch 2.

Where do Nintendo Switch child-account controls live?

Parents need to check the right control surface for each problem. Nintendo’s Americas support guidance identifies four distinct locations:

Console: System Settings > Parental Controls Software-rating presets and “Communicating with Others,” including in-game chat and exchanged messages Usually every user of that console Original Switch and Switch 2; the communication rule has a Switch 2 GameChat exception
Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app Play-time tools and linked console restrictions; on Switch 2, individual GameChat friend approvals and video permissions Linked console and supervised users Features vary between original Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo Switch App Voice chat for compatible games Nintendo Account holders aged 13 or older Separate from the Parental Controls app; console restrictions do not govern this app

Nintendo’s account and console controls are documented at Nintendo Support’s parental-controls overview. The Parental Controls app is free; setting these restrictions does not require buying an additional service.

Set up supervision before changing restrictions

A child can have a Nintendo Account in a family group. The supervising adult selects the child’s supervised account when changing account-level options. Exact consent requirements can depend on the child’s age and location, so follow the account-creation prompts for your region rather than assuming one worldwide age threshold.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How do I stop my child spending money in the eShop?

Enable Spending Restrictions on the supervised account in the parent’s Nintendo Account. This is the control that disables purchases and automatic renewal; an age filter alone does not do that.

  1. Sign in to the supervising parent’s Nintendo Account.
  2. Open the Family group.
  3. Choose the supervised account.
  4. Turn on Spending Restrictions.
  5. Save the change.

Nintendo says this restriction disables purchases and auto-renewal on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, through the Nintendo eShop/Nintendo Store, and for physical orders. The setting belongs to the selected supervised account, so check that you edited the child’s profile rather than another family member’s account. See the full account procedure at Nintendo’s Spending Restrictions instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Purchases made inside smart-device apps are separate. A phone or tablet’s own operating-system or app-store controls must be configured as well; Switch Spending Restrictions are not a universal block on every transaction made from another device.

Does an age restriction block purchases?

No. Age-Based Content Restrictions determine which eShop listings the supervised account can see. Spending Restrictions disable purchases and auto-renewal. Set both when you want to limit what is displayed and prevent transactions.

An age preset can hide games above the selected rating without stopping a permitted purchase, while a spending block can prevent buying even an age-appropriate game. Treat the two switches as separate checks in the parent account rather than as one combined “child account” setting.

How do I manage privacy and Friend Suggestions?

Use the supervising parent’s Nintendo Account settings for Friend Suggestions and for whether Nintendo Account information may be shared with third parties. These are account-privacy choices, not the same thing as the console’s in-game communication restriction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disabling Friend Suggestions does not mean Nintendo deletes the child’s existing friend list, and Nintendo’s documented control does not establish a universal block on incoming friend requests. If your concern is what the child can say inside a game, configure Communicating with Others on the console or in the linked Parental Controls app instead. Nintendo’s control descriptions are collected on its parental-controls overview.

How do I restrict chat on the original Nintendo Switch?

On the original Switch, the console’s Communicating with Others restriction covers open communication in games, including chat and exchanged messages. Nintendo’s Child and Pre-Teen presets restrict communication, or you can customize the communication option yourself.

  4. Set Communicating with Others to restrict communication.

You can make the same type of change from the linked Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Because this is a console setting, it generally affects everyone who uses that console, not only the child’s profile. That distinction matters in a shared household: a restriction intended for one child can also limit another player on the same machine. Nintendo’s setting explanation is at Nintendo Support.

Does parental control block voice chat in the Nintendo Switch App?

The Nintendo Switch App is a different smart-device app from Nintendo Switch Parental Controls. Its compatible-game voice chat is limited to Nintendo Account holders aged 13 or older, and Nintendo says the console’s parental-control settings do not govern use of that app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app is not required simply to play an online game. Voice chat also cannot begin until players have joined a compatible game mode. A headset or headphones connected to the smart device can carry the chat; Bluetooth models need HSP or HFP support according to Nintendo’s app FAQ. No headset, console setting or account toggle waives the 13-and-over eligibility rule. Read the app requirements at Nintendo Switch Online App overview and FAQ.

What changes for GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2?

Switch 2’s GameChat is governed separately from the ordinary communication setting. Nintendo explicitly says, “This specific restriction does not apply to GameChat.” In practice, a parent must use the linked Parental Controls app for supervised users and anyone younger than 16.

Approve individual GameChat friends

For users under 16 and supervised users, the parent configures GameChat in the linked app and approves friends individually. If no friends are approved, the child cannot send or receive GameChat invitations. This is narrower than a general communication preset: GameChat access depends on the approved-friend list.

What parents can see

The app can show session and friend details, such as who the child used GameChat with and when. Nintendo does not provide parents with the conversation contents, so approval and activity records are not message transcripts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional video and camera requirements

GameChat voice does not require a camera. Video chat needs a compatible USB camera for Nintendo Switch 2, sold separately. Parents can disable video or approve its use for each session. Nintendo’s GameChat support page is at Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat guidance; camera and membership details appear in Nintendo’s GameChat FAQ.

Does my child need Nintendo Switch Online?

Requirements depend on the game. Many titles require a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play, while some online features do not. Check the individual game’s stated requirement rather than assuming every multiplayer mode is covered by the same rule.

As of the October 30, 2026 verification of Nintendo’s Americas guidance, Switch 2 GameChat requires Nintendo Switch Online. A previously cited free-access exception ended on March 31, 2026, so it should not be treated as current. Nintendo’s membership and GameChat conditions are listed at Nintendo Support.

Which setting should I change for a specific problem?

  • “I want to stop purchases and renewals.” Use Spending Restrictions in the parent’s Family group; add Age-Based Content Restrictions if you also want to hide unsuitable listings.
  • “I want to limit what the child says in games on the original Switch.” Set Communicating with Others under System Settings > Parental Controls or in the linked app.
  • “I want to stop account-information sharing or Friend Suggestions.” Change those options in the supervising Nintendo Account, not in the console communication menu.
  • “I want to manage Switch 2 GameChat.” Use the linked Parental Controls app to approve friends and handle video permissions; do not rely on the general communication restriction.
  • “I mean voice chat through a phone.” Check the separate Nintendo Switch App’s 13-and-over rule and smart-device audio setup.

These controls are complementary. A game-rating preset is not a complete privacy policy, Friend Suggestions are not a purchase block, and the original-Switch communication setting does not replace Switch 2’s GameChat approval workflow.

What Nintendo’s guidance covers—and what it does not

The settings above are Nintendo’s documented account and console controls for the Americas region, verified October 30, 2026. Labels, age eligibility and service availability can change by region or software update, so review Nintendo’s current support pages before making a family rule. No parental-control setting guarantees that every third-party service, smart-device purchase path or external communication channel is restricted; those services have their own accounts and device controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I revoke a GameChat friend approval later?

Yes. Nintendo says a parent may withdraw approval for an individual friend at any time through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Removing approval affects that GameChat relationship without deleting the child’s Nintendo Account.

Will turning off the Switch 2 camera stop gameplay screen sharing?

No. The camera choice controls camera video: disabling it prevents the child from seeing other users’ camera feeds. Nintendo treats gameplay-screen sharing separately, so turning off camera video does not itself disable shared gameplay screens.

Can a child still buy something on a phone when Switch spending is restricted?

Possibly, because smart-device in-app purchases use the phone or tablet’s own controls. Configure the device’s app-store and in-app-purchase restrictions in addition to the Nintendo Account’s Spending Restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning off Friend Suggestions block every friend request?

No. Friend Suggestions is an account recommendation setting, not a documented universal friend-request block. Use the game’s communication controls and review requests with your child rather than treating that option as a complete social firewall.
