There is no universal Nintendo Switch demo length. A regular demo follows the rules set by its game, while a Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial is a downloadable full game offered for a stated event period. Nintendo keeps a Game Trial save after the trial ends, so buying the full game lets you continue. Cloud-version trials are different again: they stream the game, need a stable high-speed connection, and may limit the number of attempts.
First, identify which kind of “demo” you downloaded
Players often use “demo” for several different Nintendo Switch products. The distinction determines how long you can play, whether Nintendo Switch Online is involved, how internet access works, and what happens to your save.

Ordinary game demos
A normal demo is a separate trial build or a limited portion of a game. Its rules are set by the publisher and the individual eShop listing. The available playtime, whether progress is retained, whether online functions work, and whether any save transfers to the full release can all differ by title.

Nintendo Switch Online Game Trials
Nintendo defines a Game Trial as “a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.” It is not the same product as a standard demo. You download the full software, but access is restricted to the period established for that title or promotional event.
The Game Trial model is the one for which Nintendo explicitly says the save remains after the trial and can be used if you purchase the full game.
Cloud-version trials
A cloud-version trial streams the game instead of running the complete software locally on the console. It requires a stable, high-speed internet connection. Some cloud trials provide only a brief session or a limited number of attempts, and Nintendo says an exhausted attempt count cannot be reset.

There is no standard duration for ordinary demos
Nintendo does not impose one universal timer on every ordinary demo. One title might end after a particular section, while another might allow a fixed amount of play or leave the available content unrestricted. The only reliable duration is the one stated in that game’s eShop listing or by its publisher.
That also means an older article or a forum post about one demo cannot establish the limit for another. Check the listing for the exact edition and region on your console, especially when a publisher offers different versions or a time-limited promotional build.

Game Trial periods are set per title or event
A Game Trial runs for the period chosen for that game or event. The period is not a permanent entitlement and is not the same for every title. Nintendo says you can view the remaining time from the game’s icon on the HOME Menu. Use that indicator rather than estimating from the date you first downloaded the software.
The countdown belongs to the promotional trial window, not to a fresh block of hours that starts whenever you launch the game. If an event has a published start and end time, downloading late in the event leaves less calendar time available.
Cloud trials may measure attempts instead of hours
A cloud trial can have a short session window and, in some cases, a maximum number of attempts. The attempt count is a separate restriction from the time shown for a downloadable Game Trial. Once Nintendo’s stated number of cloud attempts has been used, the count cannot be reset, so repeatedly reconnecting or reinstalling should not be expected to restore access.
Do Switch demos require Nintendo Switch Online?
Game Trials are the Nintendo Switch Online model
Nintendo’s definition specifically describes a Game Trial as a full downloadable game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members. Access therefore depends on the membership and event eligibility described for that Game Trial. The promotional terms for the particular title remain the authority if they add regional, account, or timing conditions.
Ordinary demos have title-specific access rules
A standard demo is not automatically a Game Trial. Its eShop page determines whether any membership, account, age, or network requirement applies. Do not infer that Nintendo Switch Online is required merely because the software is labeled a demo, and do not infer that membership unlocks every ordinary demo.

Online play is a separate internet question
Membership eligibility and an internet connection are different issues. Nintendo says a Game Trial needs internet access to download and to access it initially after a console restart. Online play and other online features require internet while they are being used. A game can therefore be available as a trial while its online modes still depend on a live connection and any normal service requirements.
Plan to reconnect before launching after a restart. For an ordinary demo, follow the title’s own instructions; the available data does not establish a universal offline rule for every demo.
Will your demo save carry over when you buy the game?
Nintendo explicitly guarantees this for Game Trials
For a Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial, Nintendo’s answer is yes: “Your save data for a Game Trial is not deleted when a trial ends, so you can pick up where you left off if you purchase the game.” The practical decision is straightforward: buy the corresponding full game and use the same console user that created the trial save.
The guarantee concerns the Game Trial save itself. It does not turn every demo into a transferable preview, and it does not promise that progress from a third-party ordinary demo will import into the full release.
Where Switch save data is stored
Switch save data is stored in the console’s system memory, not on the microSD card. It is generally associated with the user selected when the game was played. Downloaded software can be archived or deleted without deleting that save data, so removing the trial software to free storage is not the same as erasing progress.

Because the save belongs to the selected user, check that you launch the purchased game under that user. A different user profile may not show the retained progress even though the software is installed correctly.
Ordinary and cloud demos need their own confirmation
For an ordinary demo, look for an explicit “save data can be transferred” statement in the eShop listing or publisher documentation. If it is absent, the safe assumption is that transfer has not been promised. Nintendo’s explicit Game Trial wording should not be extended to every downloadable demo or to every cloud-version trial.
Can you use DLC during a Game Trial?
Yes. DLC purchased for a Game Trial works while the trial is active. The DLC does not extend the trial’s calendar period and does not change the event’s end time.
When the trial ends, the DLC cannot be used unless you purchase the supporting full game. The add-on remains tied to the game it supports; owning the DLC alone does not keep an expired Game Trial playable.

The software becomes unplayable
At the end of the stated trial period, Nintendo disables access to the Game Trial software. This is an access change, not a deletion of your save. You should expect the game to stop launching into playable content until the full game is purchased.

Your Game Trial save is retained
Nintendo says the Game Trial save is not deleted when the trial ends. After purchasing the full game, you can continue from that retained progress. This is why it is generally unnecessary to erase the software or reset the console simply because the timer reached zero.
DLC waits for the full game
Any DLC bought for the trial is usable again only when the supporting full game is owned. Until then, both the expired trial and its associated add-on content are unavailable for play.

How to check a trial before you start
- Read the exact eShop listing. Determine whether the software is labeled as an ordinary demo, a Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial, or a cloud version.
- Find the limit. For a normal demo, look for a stated play limit or content boundary. For a Game Trial, note the event dates and use the remaining-time indicator on the game’s HOME Menu icon. For a cloud trial, look for session and attempt limits.
- Check access requirements. Confirm whether Nintendo Switch Online membership is listed, and note any connection requirement before launching.
- Read the save statement. Only rely on a carry-over promise when the listing or publisher explicitly makes one. Game Trials have Nintendo’s stated save-retention guarantee.
- Decide whether DLC is worthwhile. DLC can function during a Game Trial, but it will not be usable after expiration without the supporting full game.
- Use the same console user later. Since save data is generally associated with the selected user, launch the purchased game under the profile that played the trial.
Common problems and what they mean
“The trial suddenly will not start.”
First check whether the Game Trial period has ended or whether the cloud trial has exhausted its attempts. A Game Trial becomes unplayable at expiration; a cloud attempt count cannot be reset. If the period is still active, reconnect to the internet, especially if the console has been restarted, because Nintendo requires internet for initial access after a restart.

“My progress disappeared after I deleted the software.”
Archiving or deleting downloaded software does not delete Switch save data. Reinstall the corresponding game and launch it with the user profile that created the save. This guidance applies to retained system-memory save data; it does not create a transfer mechanism for an ordinary demo that never promised one.
“The DLC I bought no longer works.”
DLC purchased for a Game Trial is usable during the trial, but expiration blocks it until the supporting full game is purchased. The add-on’s presence on the console does not override the trial’s access restriction.
“I expected an offline demo.”
For a Game Trial, Nintendo requires internet for download and initial access after a restart, while online features need internet during use. Cloud trials require a stable, high-speed connection continuously enough to stream the game. Ordinary demos have no single offline policy, so consult their individual listings.
The practical answer
Call it a normal demo only after checking the title’s own rules. If it is a Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial, use the HOME Menu icon to monitor the event-specific time limit, keep internet available for download and post-restart access, and remember that Nintendo retains the save for continuation after purchase. If it is a cloud trial, judge it by connection quality and any non-resettable attempt limit rather than by the downloadable Game Trial rules.
