Use Nearby Save Data Transfer for a one-time move when both consoles are in front of you. Use Save Data Cloud when you want an online recovery copy or need to retrieve supported-game saves on another console tied to the same Nintendo Account. Local transfer needs no Nintendo Switch Online membership, but it removes the sent save from the source console. Cloud backup leaves the source intact, works only with compatible games, and requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo does not support backing up Switch saves to a microSD card or USB drive.

For a console replacement, local transfer is usually the quickest route if both systems are available. For protection against loss, travel between consoles, or recovery after a console problem, cloud backup is the better habit for every supported game. If a title lacks the cloud option and you do not have both consoles available, Nintendo provides no separate save-file backup method.

What nearby local save transfer actually does
Nearby transfer sends one game’s save from a source Switch or Switch 2 to a target console. It is different from copying a file: Nintendo’s procedure deletes the save on the source after it has been sent. The method is therefore appropriate when the old system is being replaced or when you deliberately want the progress to live on only one console.
Requirements before starting
- Have both consoles physically near each other.
- Connect both systems to the internet and install their available system updates.
- Link the same Nintendo Account to the user on each console. Save data belongs to a specific user and account; it cannot be merged with another user’s progress.
- Install the game on the destination, or make sure it can be downloaded there after the transfer.
- Keep both systems powered and connected until the confirmation screens report completion.
Move one game’s save
- On the source console, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management, then Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Select the user and the game whose save you want to send.
- On the target console, follow the same path: System Settings → Data Management → Transfer Your Save Data, then choose Receive Save Data.
- Confirm the consoles and user shown on screen, wait for the transfer to finish, and launch the game on the target to verify the expected progress.
Do not accept the final send confirmation until you are certain the target is the console you intend to keep using. Once Nintendo completes the send, the source file is removed; the operation does not leave a second local copy.

Move a complete user setup instead
If you are replacing a console and want the user’s profile and its associated saves moved together, use Nintendo’s broader user-and-save transfer rather than repeating the individual-game process. Both systems must be updated, online, and nearby. The transfer removes the moved user information and associated saves from the original system, so treat it as a handover rather than a synchronization tool.
Why local transfer can be the only option
Nearby transfer is not limited by a game’s Save Data Cloud eligibility. That makes it useful for titles that deliberately disable cloud backup or have unusual save handling. It is also the only documented route when you do not have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership but still possess both consoles.
How Save Data Cloud works
Save Data Cloud stores a game’s save under the Nintendo Account that created the backup. On another Switch or Switch 2, sign in with that account, make the game available on the system, and download the stored version. Nintendo says the vast majority of Switch 2 and Switch games support the service, but compatibility is set per title rather than guaranteed for every game.

Check whether a game is eligible
- Open the game’s product information in the Nintendo eShop and look for Save Data Cloud support.
- Check the game’s Nintendo Store product details.
- From the software’s HOME-menu options, open its save-data or cloud settings. Unsupported software will indicate that the feature is unavailable.
A missing cloud option is a compatibility limitation, not a problem with your console or membership. For that game, use nearby transfer while both systems are available.
Enable automatic backup or make a manual backup
For compatible software, automatic backup is enabled when Nintendo Switch Online membership begins. You can manage individual titles from the game’s software menu or through System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud. Select a user and game to inspect its latest backup, upload current progress, or adjust automatic backup behavior.

Before shutting down after a long session, allow the console to complete its upload. A cloud entry with an older timestamp is not a current copy of the progress you just made.
Download a backup safely
- Sign in to the same Nintendo Account that owns the cloud backup on the destination Switch or Switch 2.
- Install or insert the compatible game and open System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud, or open the game’s software menu and choose its cloud option.
- Select the user and title, then compare the cloud-backup timestamp with the save currently on the destination.
- Choose the newer progress when the timestamps show that one version is more recent.
- Confirm the download only after checking the warning. The downloaded file replaces the destination’s existing save for that game, and Nintendo does not provide recovery for the overwritten version.
- Start the game and verify the expected chapter, inventory, island, or other progress before making new changes.
The timestamp comparison matters when you have played on two consoles or when a console was offline. Cloud is not a merge system: it selects one version to install over the other.

What happens when Nintendo Switch Online expires?
Save Data Cloud access is tied to an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. When the membership expires, you cannot use the stored backups. Nintendo states that access can be restored by resubscribing within 180 days. That 180-day period is an access condition, not a promise that cloud storage is a permanent archive independent of membership.
Your local saves remain on the consoles where they already exist. The membership lapse affects the online backup and download function; it does not erase a save that is still stored locally. If cloud recovery is important, renew before you need to restore a system and confirm that each important game’s backup is current.
Choose the right method for your situation
You are replacing an old console
Use the full user-and-save transfer when you want the profile and its associated saves moved as a group. If only one title matters, use individual nearby save transfer. Check the destination after moving the data, then reset or give away the old console only after you are satisfied that the transfer is complete.

You are keeping both consoles in the household
Use Save Data Cloud for every eligible game. This keeps the source save available and gives you a recovery path if one console fails. When switching systems, download deliberately and inspect timestamps first; do not assume that the newest local session is already the newest cloud version.

There is no Nintendo-supported online or removable-drive substitute. While both consoles are available, perform a nearby transfer. If the source console is lost or unusable before that move, Nintendo’s standard Switch save tools cannot create a replacement from an SD card or USB drive.
You have no Nintendo Switch Online membership
Nearby transfer remains available as long as both consoles meet its connection and account requirements. Cloud backup and cloud download are unavailable without the membership.
You need to move between Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo supports sharing saves between Switch 2 and Switch for compatible software. A Switch 2-only feature or version cannot run on the original Switch, even if the underlying save can be moved. Confirm that the specific game and its edition are supported on the destination before transferring or downloading.
Save data that needs special attention
User-specific saves
Most saves are attached to a user on the console and the corresponding Nintendo Account. Selecting the wrong user during transfer can make the expected progress appear to be missing. Save data from two users cannot be merged into one profile through Nintendo’s standard tools.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses shared-island data and has a separate transfer process. Do not treat its island move as an ordinary individual save transfer. Follow Nintendo’s title-specific instructions and identify whether you are moving the island, a resident, or restoring island data before confirming any operation.
Games with unusual or restricted cloud behavior
Some games disable Save Data Cloud or handle online features differently. The absence of the option in the software menu is authoritative for that title. Nearby transfer can still move an individual save when the two-console requirements are met, but it will not create a durable backup once the source is deleted.
Why an SD card or USB drive cannot solve this
Nintendo’s current Switch FAQ states that local save-data backups are not supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch. A microSD card can store downloaded software, screenshots, videos, and other supported content, but it is not a destination for an exportable save file. The same applies to a USB drive: connecting one does not provide a Nintendo-documented save-backup workflow.
Do not delete a local save and assume that reinstalling the game from a card will restore progress. Software installation and save data are handled separately. The supported choices are nearby transfer and, for eligible games, Save Data Cloud.

Before a nearby transfer
- Confirm which console is the source and which is the target.
- Verify the selected user and title on the source screen.
- Check that both systems are online, updated, nearby, and charged.
- Install the game on the target if necessary.
- Decide whether deleting the source save is acceptable before pressing the final send button.
Before downloading from the cloud
- Verify that the destination uses the Nintendo Account that owns the backup.
- Confirm the title supports Save Data Cloud.
- Inspect the cloud and console timestamps.
- Back out if the destination contains newer progress you need to keep; downloading will replace it.
- Keep the console connected until the download completes, then launch the game to validate the result.
Troubleshooting common failures
The target does not appear during local transfer
Place both consoles close together, connect each to the internet, install pending system updates, and confirm that the relevant users are linked to the same Nintendo Account. Restart both systems if the transfer menu still cannot discover the other console, then repeat the procedure from System Settings → Data Management → Transfer Your Save Data.

The game has no Save Data Cloud option
Check the eShop listing, Nintendo Store details, and the software menu. If all three indicate that the title is unsupported, membership will not add the feature. Use nearby transfer while both consoles are usable; there is no SD-card or USB workaround.
The downloaded save looks older
Stop playing on the destination and compare the timestamps for the local and cloud versions. If the local version is newer, cancel the download. If the cloud version is the one you need, download it only after accepting that the destination’s current file will be overwritten.
Your backup is unavailable after membership ended
Resubscribe with the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s stated restoration window is 180 days after expiration. Once access returns, open Save Data Cloud and verify that the expected games and backup dates are present.

- Keep Nintendo Switch Online active if cloud recovery matters to you.
- After important sessions, allow compatible games to upload and periodically inspect their backup dates.
- When moving between consoles, choose local transfer for a one-time handoff and cloud download for a reversible recovery scenario.
- Maintain only one authoritative version of a game when possible; alternating offline play between consoles increases the chance of choosing the wrong timestamp.
- For unsupported or shared-data titles, read the game’s Nintendo instructions before changing consoles.
The deciding question is whether you are moving a save once or protecting it for later. Move it locally when both consoles are present and the destination should become the new home. Back it up to the cloud when you need an online safety net, provided the game supports the service and your Nintendo Switch Online membership remains active.
