For two people sharing one undocked screen, the Nintendo Switch OLED Model is the better fit. Its 7.0-inch OLED display and wide adjustable stand make tabletop play easier to position and see than the standard Switch’s 6.2-inch LCD and smaller replaceable stand. If each player will hold a separate console, however, OLED does not add a multiplayer mode; both systems use the same game-defined local-wireless features, so screen preference, storage and the actual purchase price become the deciding factors.
The terminology matters. Nintendo calls one person holding a console with Joy-Con attached handheld mode. It calls placing a console on a surface with detached controllers tabletop mode. Two people cannot normally share one Switch while both holding the same console in handheld mode; they either share one screen in tabletop mode or use multiple systems when a game supports local wireless.

Can two people play on one Switch in handheld mode?
Not in the usual meaning of handheld mode. Handheld mode means one player holds the console with the Joy-Con attached. Two people can share that single screen only by using tabletop mode: put the console on a surface, detach the Joy-Con and give a controller to each player. Nintendo also describes local multiplayer in handheld mode as using multiple Switch systems when the game supports it.

Nintendo’s play-mode guidance explains that a system held in the hands can run single-player games, while local multiplayer in that mode uses multiple Nintendo Switch systems. The distinction is set out in Nintendo’s play-mode support guidance.
One console, one screen
For a two-player game that lists single-system support, detach the two included Joy-Con controllers and place the console on its stand. Each player then uses one Joy-Con if the game permits that control layout. This is tabletop multiplayer, even though the console is undocked and portable.
Two consoles, two screens
If each person wants to hold a console, each player needs a Switch and a copy or license of the game as required by that title. The consoles connect through local wireless only when the game’s listing includes that mode. OLED and standard models can participate together; the OLED screen does not change the rules or player count.
Is the OLED screen worth it for two-player tabletop games?
It is the most meaningful upgrade when several people must watch one undocked screen. The OLED model has a 7.0-inch OLED panel, compared with 6.2 inches on the standard model. Both render 1280×720, so the OLED gives a larger picture and OLED contrast, not a higher handheld resolution.
Why the larger panel helps
In tabletop play, players often sit at different angles or a little farther from the console than a solo handheld player would. The extra screen area can make menus, tracks and small characters easier to share visually. That is a practical interpretation of the published dimensions, not a measured viewing-distance or readability test.
The stand is as important as the panel
The OLED model uses a wide adjustable stand. The standard Switch uses a smaller replaceable stand. The wider adjustment range gives you more flexibility to angle one screen toward two players on a table. Nintendo’s specifications establish the design difference; no independent stability measurement is available here, so do not treat it as a quantified durability or wobble advantage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAudio and the limits of the upgrade
Nintendo lists enhanced onboard audio for handheld and tabletop use on the OLED model. That can matter when both players need to hear game cues without a television, but the console does not gain a new multiplayer feature from the audio hardware. Both displays remain 1280×720, and the two compared models use an NVIDIA Custom Tegra processor; those specifications alone do not prove identical frame rates in every game.
What is the hardware difference between OLED and standard Switch?
| Decision point | OLED Model HEG-001 | Standard HAC-001(-01) | What it means for multiplayer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in display | 7.0-inch OLED, 1280×720 | 6.2-inch LCD, 1280×720 | OLED supplies a larger shared image and OLED contrast; neither increases pixel resolution. |
| Undocked stand | Wide adjustable stand | Replaceable stand | OLED offers more positioning flexibility for a shared tabletop screen. |
| Internal storage | 64 GB | 32 GB | More room for digital games and updates; storage does not add a multiplayer mode. |
| Estimated battery life | Approximately 4.5–9 hours | Approximately 4.5–9 hours | These are Nintendo estimates; actual life varies by game and conditions, not measured multiplayer sessions. |
| Weight with Joy-Con | Approximately 0.93 lb | Approximately 0.88 lb | The standard model is lighter by specification; that does not establish a proven comfort difference. |
| Dock networking | Dock includes a wired LAN port | Wired internet requires a USB LAN adapter and cable | Relevant to docked internet play, not undocked local multiplayer. |
The OLED model released on October 8, 2021, according to Nintendo’s OLED overview. Neither model should be described as having better multiplayer performance solely from its processor listing. Game software, connection method and controller requirements determine what players can do.

Which multiplayer modes does each Switch support?
The game listing, not the console name, decides whether multiplayer works. Before buying a second system or extra controllers, check the title’s player-count fields for single-system, local wireless and online play. Nintendo’s December 18, 2024 multiplayer guide groups games by those categories, but the individual product listing is the final check for a particular release or update.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop and handheld modes for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Its Switch listing specifies single-system play for 1–4 players, local wireless for 2–8 and online play for 2–12. Those are the counts shown for the original Switch version; do not merge them with any separately described Switch 2 update. See the Nintendo game listing for the current details.

That makes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe a clear example of two different setups: two to four people can share one Switch in tabletop mode with suitable controllers, while two to eight can use separate systems over local wireless if each system and game setup meets Nintendo’s requirements.
Super Mario Party Jamboree
Super Mario Party Jamboree lists TV, tabletop and handheld modes and single-system play for 1–4 players. Its listing does not include a local-wireless category. Therefore, do not assume that two players holding separate consoles can play together offline just because the game supports one-system multiplayer.
Some minigames require Joy-Con motion controls. Inspect the control note for the activity you intend to play; a game that supports four players on one system may still require a particular Joy-Con configuration.
Original Super Mario Party
The original Super Mario Party listing names TV and tabletop modes, not handheld mode. An undocked console does not automatically gain a handheld play mode simply because it has a built-in screen. This is why checking each game’s mode list is more reliable than choosing by genre or console model.

Can an OLED Switch play locally with a regular Switch?
Yes, when the game supports local wireless. OLED and standard systems are members of the same Nintendo Switch platform family for compatible games. One player can use an OLED console and another a standard console, but the game must explicitly list local-wireless play and the players must follow that title’s room or pairing procedure.
- Confirm the mode. On the Nintendo product page or the game’s packaging, look for “local wireless” and its player count. Do not substitute “tabletop” or “handheld” for local wireless; those labels describe how one system is used.
- Prepare each system. Charge both consoles, install the same game version and ensure each player has the controller arrangement the title specifies. Some games require one copy per system; others state different sharing rules.
- Open the game’s local mode. One player creates a room or host session and the others choose the local-wireless option, then join the displayed room. The exact menu names vary by game.
- Keep consoles nearby. Local wireless is a direct nearby connection, not an internet match. Put the systems where players can see their own screens and follow any in-game connection prompts.
- Recheck the listing if it fails. A patch, regional release or mode-specific restriction can change the available choices. The listing’s player-count fields are more authoritative than a general assumption that all Switch games network locally.
Do you need extra Joy-Con for multiplayer?
The included pair is enough for two people only in games that support one Joy-Con per player. Other titles require each player to use a complete Joy-Con pair, a different controller type or additional controllers. Four-player tabletop sessions therefore often need more hardware, but the exact requirement comes from the game’s control instructions.

Two players on one system
Detach the left and right Joy-Con, sync each to the console and assign one to each player when the game offers single-Joy-Con controls. Buttons, motion sensors and sticks available to one detached Joy-Con vary by title. A minigame that needs two sticks or motion input may not work with one Joy-Con per person even if the overall game supports two players.
Three or four players
Plan the controller count before inviting a group. You may need another Joy-Con pair or compatible controllers, and some activities may require a specific mix. Player-count numbers describe the game’s supported maximum, not the number of controllers included with the console.
Separate-console play
When each player has a Switch for local wireless, each console normally needs its own controller setup. The fact that one system is OLED does not supply controllers to the other system or reduce a game’s per-console requirements.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online to play locally?
No for same-console tabletop play, and generally no for supported local-wireless play nearby. Nintendo Switch Online is associated with compatible online multiplayer over the internet, while local play uses one system or a direct local-wireless connection. Some games can offer both, so select the offline local option rather than the online option in the game’s menu.
Membership requirements can vary by title and feature. Check Nintendo’s current US service information and the game’s own online-play notice; do not rely on obsolete historical wording in older FAQ passages about the service’s original launch. A subscription also does not create local-wireless support for a game whose listing omits that mode.
Does the OLED model last longer or run games faster?
There is no manufacturer battery-life advantage between these two models in the cited specifications. Nintendo estimates approximately 4.5–9 hours for both, with actual duration depending on the game and use. Those figures are not measurements of multiplayer sessions, screen brightness or wireless activity.
Both list an NVIDIA Custom Tegra processor. The processor specification does not establish that every game has identical frame rates, nor does the OLED display raise output resolution. Choose OLED for its screen, stand, audio and storage rather than a promised performance boost that the specifications do not prove.
Which model is better when each player owns a console?
When two people will use separate systems, the shared-screen advantages matter less. Each player looks at an individual display, so the decision becomes personal preference and budget: OLED offers a 7.0-inch OLED panel and 64 GB storage, while standard Switch is lighter by specification and has 32 GB. Both list the same estimated battery range and 1280×720 resolution.

Consider OLED for the player who values larger, higher-contrast handheld visuals, adjustable tabletop positioning for solo use or extra internal storage. Consider standard Switch when the lower current purchase price is the priority, when two systems are being bought for local wireless and the display upgrade would be duplicated, or when the modestly lower specified weight matters. Delivered prices and bundle contents change by retailer and date, so compare exact HEG-001 and HAC-001(-01) bundles at checkout.
What accessories and setup details matter?
Screen protection
The OLED screen uses a factory anti-scattering film. Nintendo warns not to peel it off, and a standard Switch screen protector may not fit the OLED’s larger display. Buy a protector identified for the OLED size and install it over the factory film according to the accessory instructions.

Both consoles support compatible microSD expansion. The OLED’s 64 GB internal storage gives more starting capacity than the standard model’s 32 GB, but neither amount guarantees room for every digital download and update. Storage affects convenience, not multiplayer compatibility.
Docked wired networking
The OLED dock includes a wired LAN port. The standard Switch requires a USB LAN adapter and cable for wired docked internet. This difference is useful for docked online play; it does not improve or enable undocked local wireless.
Table position and power
For a shared screen, place the console where both players have a clear angle, extend the OLED stand to the desired position or use the standard stand as designed, and connect power for a long session. The stand difference is a positioning feature, not a guarantee of stability on every surface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you set up two-player tabletop play?
- Check the game mode. Confirm that the title lists single-system multiplayer and note its maximum player count and controller requirements.
- Update and launch the game. Install any available game update, start the title and choose the one-system, TV or tabletop-compatible multiplayer option.
- Detach and pair the Joy-Con. Slide the controllers off the console, press the sync or controller buttons as prompted and assign one controller to each player.
- Place the console. Put it on a stable surface in tabletop mode. On OLED, adjust the wide stand; on standard Switch, use its replaceable stand.
- Choose controls per player. Follow the game’s on-screen controller assignment. If a minigame needs motion or a full pair, add the required controller before starting.
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
- The game offers no local wireless option: use one-system tabletop play if listed, or choose another title whose product page includes local wireless.
- A second console cannot join: verify both systems are in the game’s local-wireless menu, nearby, updated and using the required game copies or licenses.
- Only one player is recognized: open the controller assignment screen, detach and resync the Joy-Con, then confirm that the game supports the chosen one-controller-per-player layout.
- A minigame will not start: read its control icon or instruction screen. Motion, IR or two-stick requirements can rule out a single detached Joy-Con.
- The screen is difficult to share: move the console closer, adjust the OLED stand angle or switch to a television in TV mode. The OLED panel is larger, but neither model changes the game’s camera or interface.
- Online prompts appear during local play: back out and select single-system or local-wireless play. Nintendo Switch Online is for compatible online features, not a universal key for nearby multiplayer.
How we picked the better multiplayer choice
The ranking follows the hardware and software distinctions that directly affect the stated use case:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Whether players share one undocked screen or hold separate consoles.
- Display size, panel type and stand design for tabletop visibility and positioning.
- Game-defined single-system and local-wireless player counts.
- Controller requirements, including one Joy-Con per player and motion-control exceptions.
- Storage, battery estimates, weight and dock networking as secondary buying factors.
- Official Nintendo specifications and game listings verified in 2026, without treating those figures as independent performance tests.
On that basis, OLED ranks first for shared portable-screen multiplayer, while the standard model remains a sensible second choice when two consoles are needed or its lower real-world price outweighs the display and stand upgrades.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a standard Switch screen protector on the OLED model?
Not necessarily. Nintendo warns that a standard protector may not fit the OLED’s larger screen, and the OLED’s factory anti-scattering film should remain in place. Choose a protector specifically labeled for the OLED model and apply it over that film.
