For the simplest setup, buy the physical edition of Nintendo Switch Sports if you want a Leg Strap included; choose the digital edition and buy a strap separately only if you plan to play Leg-Strap Mode. Then add controllers only after checking what you already own and which sports and player modes you want. The key exception is Switch 2: Joy-Con 2 work in supported game modes, but they do not fit the Leg Strap, so strap-based Soccer requires an original left Joy-Con. A Switch 2-only household will also need a way to charge any original Joy-Con it adds.
There is no universal accessory bundle that suits every household. The right shopping list depends on your console, edition, local-player plans and interest in Soccer’s strap mode—not on buying every accessory shown alongside the game.

What should you buy for Nintendo Switch Sports?
Start with the game edition, then check the console and controllers you have. For many players, the only purchase is the game itself: the physical edition includes one Leg Strap, and the game supports several sports without that accessory. A digital buyer who wants strap-based Soccer should budget for a separate strap. Additional controllers are a separate decision based on the sport and mode you want to play.
| Your setup or plan | What to consider buying | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| You want the game and may try Leg-Strap Mode | The physical edition, which Nintendo says includes one Leg Strap | Do not buy a separate strap before checking the actual box contents. |
| You prefer a digital download and want Leg-Strap Mode | A separate Nintendo Leg Strap and a compatible original left Joy-Con | The strap listing says the Joy-Con controller is not included. |
| You want same-system Soccer sessions using two straps | A second Leg Strap may be useful for that specific setup | A second strap is not a requirement for every sport or every player. |
| You are playing on Switch 2 and want strap-based Soccer | An original left Joy-Con, plus a way to charge it | Joy-Con 2 cannot be used inside the Leg Strap. |
| You want more local players | Possibly additional compatible controllers; check the selected sport and mode first | There is no verified one-size-fits-all controller quantity for every sport. |
Nintendo’s current US store listing shows eight sports—Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara—and lists one to four players on one system and one to two online. Those figures describe the current listing, verified in 2026; they are not numbers Nintendo first announced that year. Nintendo’s FAQ says controller arrangements vary by sport, so treat the table above as a buying filter, not a promise of a complete player-by-player controller recipe.

Does Nintendo Switch Sports come with a Leg Strap?
The physical edition includes one Leg Strap according to Nintendo’s physical-edition details. The digital game does not arrive with a physical accessory, so digital buyers who want that play style need to purchase the strap separately.
Check the specific retailer’s listing and package description before checkout. Nintendo’s digital product page includes generic promotional language that says “included Leg Strap,” while its physical-edition details identify the strap as a box inclusion and its standalone strap listing addresses separate purchases. For the contents of a physical copy, rely on the actual edition and retailer listing rather than assuming every digital purchase includes hardware.
The strap is for Leg-Strap Mode in Soccer, not a required accessory for all eight sports. It is worn on the thigh, with a compatible Joy-Con inserted in the holder. Nintendo’s separate strap listing states that the Joy-Con controller is not included, so buying the strap alone does not supply the controller needed to use it.
When is a second Leg Strap worth buying?
Consider a second strap if you specifically want the same-system Soccer sessions Nintendo describes that use two straps. It is a focused addition for that play setup, not a general recommendation for families, multiplayer play or the rest of the sports.
Before ordering, confirm that the first strap is already included with your physical game or in your household’s existing accessories. A digital buyer who wants one strap can purchase the standalone accessory; a physical buyer may already have the first one. The second strap should be an intentional choice based on the Soccer mode you plan to play, rather than an automatic “multiplayer” add-on.
Nintendo’s standalone product listing still says other Soccer matches “will” receive a future update. That wording is older launch-era copy and should not be treated as proof that those match types remain unavailable. Nintendo’s current FAQ gives instructions for selecting Leg-Strap Mode in multiple play contexts; use the current in-game and support instructions rather than relying on that future-tense product blurb.

How many Joy-Cons do I need for two players?
There is no safe universal answer based only on the number of players. Nintendo says controller configurations vary with the sport, and the official information summarized here does not provide a complete current matrix for every sport and mode. Count compatible controllers you already own, select the sports and local modes you care about, then follow the game’s controller prompt before buying extras.
Use this sequence to avoid overbuying:
- Choose the sport and play mode. A controller setup that works for one activity should not be assumed to cover another.
- Check the controller prompt in the game. Nintendo instructs players in local play to press + at the screen that shows how to hold the controllers. Use that screen as the mode-specific setup check.
- Count controllers that are actually compatible with that setup. Do not count a Pro Controller as a substitute; Nintendo’s FAQ rules out both generations of Pro Controller.
- Buy only the shortfall for the modes you intend to play. If you want several sports, check the prompts for those sports rather than treating one configuration as a guaranteed universal kit.
For two players, a pair of Joy-Con may be enough for some chosen configurations, but the supplied official information does not establish that one pair covers every two-player scenario. Avoid buying an extra pair on a blanket assumption—and avoid assuming the pair you own will support every sport you want. The game’s own prompt for the selected activity is the practical check.
Do I need another pair of Joy-Cons for four players?
Not necessarily, and the player limit alone does not tell you exactly what to order. Nintendo lists one to four players on one system, but also says controller configurations vary by sport. The official material available for this guide does not settle a precise Joy-Con count for every four-player mode, so a rigid “four players always need exactly four Joy-Con” rule would overstate what is confirmed.
First decide which sport and local mode your group will play. Then check the on-screen controller instructions for that setup and inventory the compatible controllers in your home. Buy only the missing controllers for the actual configuration. If the group plans to switch between sports, repeat the check for each one; the controller prompt may differ.

For households that want a reliable plan before buying, make a short list of the specific modes people expect to use and verify each one in the game. Nintendo provides a general one-to-four local-player figure, not a complete shopping chart by sport, so buying a fixed number of controllers from the player limit alone risks either unnecessary spending or arriving short for a preferred setup.
Can I use Joy-Con 2 with the Leg Strap?
No. Nintendo Support states: “Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap.” Nintendo marks Nintendo Switch Sports as supported on Switch 2 and allows suitable Joy-Con 2 controls in applicable sports, but that broader game compatibility does not extend to putting Joy-Con 2 into the strap.

If you want Leg-Strap Mode on Switch 2, use an original Switch left Joy-Con in the strap. This is a particularly important distinction for a Switch 2-only household: the game can run on the newer console, yet the strap-based Soccer setup still depends on an older controller. A Joy-Con 2 bundle is not a substitute for an original left Joy-Con when the goal is Leg-Strap Mode.
On Switch 2, original Joy-Con connect wirelessly but cannot attach to the console to charge. If you buy or already own an original Joy-Con for the strap, plan how you will keep it charged: use an original Switch or a compatible original-Joy-Con charging accessory. A Switch 2 charging arrangement that relies on attaching Joy-Con 2 does not solve this older-controller requirement.
How do I charge original Joy-Cons on Switch 2?
Because original Joy-Con cannot attach to Switch 2 for charging, a Switch 2-only setup needs another charging route. Nintendo’s compatibility information points to an original Switch or a compatible charging accessory for original Joy-Con; plan for that separately from buying the Leg Strap.
Before purchasing anything, check whether your household already has an original Switch or an accessory compatible with original Joy-Con. If not, consider a suitable original-Joy-Con charging stand or other compatible charging accessory. Confirm compatibility with the original Joy-Con generation rather than selecting an accessory only because its product title mentions Switch 2 or Joy-Con generally.
This is a conditional purchase, not a requirement for every Switch 2 owner. It matters if your setup needs an original Joy-Con—for example, to use the Leg Strap—and you do not already have a way to charge that controller.
Do Pro Controllers work with Switch Sports?
No. Nintendo’s FAQ rules out both generations of Pro Controller, and it also rules out handheld mode. Plan to use supported Joy-Con configurations rather than buying a Pro Controller as an alternative for this game.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That limitation is easy to overlook if you already own a Pro Controller for other games. It does not become suitable because you are playing on Switch 2: the game’s supported controller arrangements remain sport-dependent, and Nintendo does not list either Pro Controller generation as an option. Check the game’s controller prompt for a compatible setup.
Which accessories are useful, and which are optional?
For most buyers, the meaningful extras are limited to a Leg Strap when the edition does not include one, a second strap for the specific Soccer sessions that use two, and additional compatible Joy-Con if the intended sport and player setup calls for them. A charging accessory is relevant when original Joy-Con must be used with Switch 2 and there is no other way to charge them.
- Leg Strap: useful for the Soccer play style designed for it. The physical edition includes one; digital buyers purchase it separately if wanted.
- Second Leg Strap: optional and aimed at same-system Soccer sessions that use two straps—not a universal multiplayer need.
- Extra original Joy-Con: buy only after checking the setup prompt for the sport and mode. An original left Joy-Con is needed inside the strap.
- Original-Joy-Con charging accessory: potentially useful for a Switch 2-only household that needs original Joy-Con but has no original Switch or compatible charger.
- Replacement wrist straps: replace missing wrist straps rather than playing without them.
- Decorative racket, sword or golf-club shells: not established as required, officially endorsed or performance-enhancing by the official information summarized here. Do not confuse them with necessary equipment.
Nintendo’s safety guidance says to wear wrist straps and leave adequate room around you during gameplay. Clear a safe playing area before starting, particularly when several people are sharing a room. If a wrist strap is missing, replace it; shaped plastic shells do not take priority over the basic safety instruction.

Local play and online play are separate decisions. Nintendo’s current US listing identifies local play for one to four players on one system and online play for one to two players; full Play Globally access requires Nintendo Switch Online. Do not add a membership to the shopping list merely because you want to play in the same room, but account for it if your plan is global online competition.

These directions explain how to choose the mode; they do not make Joy-Con 2 compatible with the strap. On Switch 2, the controller inside the Leg Strap must still be an original left Joy-Con.
What is the simplest buying checklist?
Use this checklist in order, so you do not buy a duplicate strap or the wrong generation of controller.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Choose physical or digital. The physical edition includes one strap according to Nintendo’s edition details. A digital download requires a separate strap if you want strap-based play.
- Decide whether you want Leg-Strap Mode. If not, you can leave the strap off your list; it is not required for every sport.
- Check which console will run the game. Switch 2 supports the game, but strap use needs original Joy-Con, not Joy-Con 2.
- Check the strap controller. The strap requires an original left Joy-Con; the standalone strap does not include one.
- Plan original Joy-Con charging if you have Switch 2 only. Original controllers cannot attach to Switch 2 to charge.
- Choose intended sports and modes before counting extra controllers. Check each in-game controller prompt; Nintendo says configurations vary.
- Add a second strap only for the Soccer setup that calls for it. Do not treat it as a general requirement for multiplayer.
- Separate online service from hardware. Nintendo Switch Online is needed for full Play Globally access, not for the physical strap or local controller setup.
- Follow the safety guidance. Wear wrist straps and leave adequate room around players.
The most common avoidable mistakes are buying a duplicate first strap with the physical edition, expecting a strap purchase to include a Joy-Con, treating Joy-Con 2 as strap-compatible, and ordering a fixed controller quantity based only on player count. Checking the edition details and the mode-specific controller prompt prevents those errors more reliably than purchasing a large bundle “just in case.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Nintendo Switch Sports be played with four people online?
Nintendo’s current US store listing gives a range of one to two online players, distinct from its one-to-four-player single-system listing. That listing does not support assuming that four people can join one online session from a single console.
Is Basketball available in Nintendo Switch Sports now?
Yes. Nintendo’s current list of eight sports includes Basketball. Nintendo announced the Basketball update on July 9, 2024, so it is not a future feature.
Can the Leg Strap be used with any Joy-Con?
No: the strap needs an original left Joy-Con. The Joy-Con controller is sold separately from the standalone strap, and Joy-Con 2 are not compatible with it.
