Yes. Nintendo Switch Sports supports offline play on one Nintendo Switch console, and several sports work with a single Joy-Con. Bowling and Golf are the most flexible, supporting one Joy-Con for up to four local players. Tennis, Chambara, Badminton, Volleyball and Basketball require one Joy-Con for each active player, while Soccer requires two Joy-Cons per player. Offline play uses the console’s nearby-player mode, not local wireless between two consoles. You need TV or tabletop mode; Nintendo says the game does not support Handheld Mode.

What does “offline” mean in Nintendo Switch Sports?
Offline means selecting the nearby-player option on a single Nintendo Switch rather than entering an online mode. Nintendo’s support guidance says one console can host between one and four local players, with the exact limit determined by the sport. A solo player is matched against computer-controlled opponents.

How do I start a local game without internet?
You do not need a Nintendo Switch Online membership for the documented one-console local mode. Use the following setup:

- Connect the Switch to a television, or place it in tabletop mode with the console supported on its stand.
- Detach the Joy-Con controllers you plan to use. Handheld mode is not supported.
- Launch Nintendo Switch Sports and choose the nearby-player or local option instead of an online activity.
- Select the sport and add players when prompted. The game applies that sport’s controller limit, from one shared Joy-Con to two Joy-Cons per player.
- For solo play, continue with the computer opponent. For group play, pass or assign controllers according to the sport’s requirements.
If the game presents an online requirement, you have selected an internet activity rather than the nearby-player mode. Return to the mode-selection screen and choose the local option.
Which sports work with one Joy-Con?
A single Joy-Con can be enough, but support differs by sport. The table below follows Nintendo’s controller specifications and separates a shared one-controller setup from the one-controller-per-player rule.

| Sport | Controller requirement | What one Joy-Con means |
|---|---|---|
| Bowling | One Joy-Con for up to four players | The most flexible option when a group has only one controller |
| Golf | One Joy-Con for up to four players | Supports up to four local players with one Joy-Con |
| Tennis | One Joy-Con per player | One player can play with one Joy-Con; four players need four Joy-Cons |
| Chambara | One Joy-Con per player | Standard play uses one per player; Twin Swords needs a left-right Joy-Con set per player |
| Badminton | One Joy-Con per player | Each active player needs a controller |
| Volleyball | One Joy-Con per player | Four-player play needs four Joy-Cons |
| Basketball | One Joy-Con per player | Four-player play needs four Joy-Cons |
| Soccer | Two Joy-Cons per player | A single Joy-Con cannot provide the required setup |
Bowling and Golf
These are the best choices when only one Joy-Con is available. Nintendo lists one Joy-Con as supporting up to four players for both sports, so a group can use one console and one controller rather than supplying one controller to every participant.
Tennis, Chambara, Badminton, Volleyball and Basketball
These sports use one Joy-Con for each active player. One person can play with one controller, but simultaneous multiplayer increases the controller requirement directly. Four-player Tennis, Volleyball or Basketball therefore requires four Joy-Cons.
Chambara has an extra rule: its Twin Swords option requires one left-right Joy-Con set per player. That means each participant needs both a left and a right Joy-Con for that particular configuration, rather than a single controller.

Soccer
Soccer is the exception to the otherwise one-controller pattern. Nintendo lists two Joy-Cons per player, so a single Joy-Con is not sufficient. Soccer’s Shootout mode also uses the Leg Strap; that accessory requirement is specific to Shootout and does not apply to ordinary offline play in the other sports.
Can I play every sport with just one controller?
No. One Joy-Con covers Bowling and Golf for groups of up to four, and it is enough for one player in the sports that use one controller per player. It does not satisfy Soccer’s two-controller-per-player requirement, and it cannot provide Chambara’s Twin Swords setup.
Choose the sport before counting controllers. For a single-player session, one Joy-Con works for Bowling, Golf, Tennis, standard Chambara, Badminton, Volleyball and Basketball. Soccer still needs two Joy-Cons, while Twin Swords needs one complete left-right pair.
Does offline play work on a Switch Lite or in handheld mode?
No. Nintendo’s support wording is unambiguous: “Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode.” The game is designed for TV or tabletop play with detached Joy-Cons and motion controls.
Nintendo Japan’s product information also states that the software cannot be played on Nintendo Switch Lite. The Lite has integrated controls and does not provide the detachable Joy-Cons required by the game, so buying the software for a Lite alone will not create a supported setup.

Can two Switch consoles play Nintendo Switch Sports locally?
No. The nearby-player option is local play on one shared console, not local wireless multiplayer. Nintendo specifically says the game does not support local communication play, so two systems cannot be linked for an offline match.
If two households want to play from separate consoles, they must use an online activity instead of nearby-player mode. That changes the requirements: each system needs internet access, and Nintendo Switch Online is required for online play.
When is Nintendo Switch Online required?
Nintendo Switch Online is required for Nintendo Switch Sports online. It is not required for the one-console local mode described above. The membership requirement therefore depends on where the other players are, not on whether you own a particular sport or controller.
Online play also has a different player arrangement from local play. Nintendo’s current product information describes sessions of up to 16 players globally and up to eight friends online, with up to two players participating from one console. Those figures apply to online activities and should not be confused with the one-console offline limit of one to four players, which varies by sport.

The game says an online membership is required
Check that you selected the nearby-player activity. Nintendo’s membership requirement applies to online play; choosing an online menu item will trigger it even when everyone is in the same room.
A second console cannot find the session
That is expected behavior rather than a controller fault. Nintendo Switch Sports does not support local communication play between two consoles. Use one shared Switch for offline multiplayer or move both players to an online activity.
The game will not start in handheld mode
Handheld mode is unsupported. Dock the console for TV play or use tabletop mode with detached Joy-Cons.
A sport will not accept the available controllers
Compare the sport with Nintendo’s controller rule. Soccer needs two Joy-Cons per player; Twin Swords needs a left-right pair per player; the one-Joy-Con group option is limited to Bowling and Golf.

Shootout will not recognize the accessory
Soccer Shootout uses the Leg Strap in addition to its controller requirement. Attach the strap as directed before entering that mode; ordinary Soccer and the other sports do not use it as a universal requirement.
Which setup should you choose?
Choose one-console nearby-player mode when everyone is together and you want to avoid an internet connection or membership. With only one Joy-Con, select Bowling or Golf for the broadest multiplayer support. If your group wants Tennis, Chambara, Badminton, Volleyball or Basketball simultaneously, count one controller per player. Plan for two Joy-Cons per person for Soccer, plus a Leg Strap if Shootout is the goal.
