Yes, Nintendo Switch Sports supports online multiplayer, but playing against other people online requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Without one, Play Globally offers only a trial against computer-controlled opponents. You can also play locally on one system, separately from the online subscription requirement; Nintendo says local play supports up to four players, with the exact player and controller setup depending on the sport.
Which Nintendo Switch Sports multiplayer mode should you choose?
The key difference is whether you want to play on one console with people in the room or connect to online play. Nintendo distinguishes those situations in its multiplayer instructions and FAQ.

The limited Play Globally trial is easy to mistake for full online access because it appears within an online-labelled mode. It is not a way to play online multiplayer without a subscription: Nintendo describes the no-membership option as a trial against computer competitors.
In practical terms, choose local multiplayer when everyone can use the same Switch. Choose Play Globally when you want to compete through the internet, or Play with Friends when you want a private session with particular people. The subscription rule applies to the internet-based choices, not to simply sharing one system.

What do you need to play Nintendo Switch Sports online?
For actual online multiplayer, have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, internet access, a Nintendo Account, and the game. Nintendo’s product page and Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ identify the membership, account, and internet requirements for online features.
- An active membership: Nintendo’s FAQ states that it is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online. Nintendo’s membership feature information supports online multiplayer across individual and family membership types, including Expansion Pack tiers; the Expansion Pack is not a separate requirement for this game.
- Internet access: The console must be connected to the internet for online features. A membership alone does not provide the connection.
- A Nintendo Account: Nintendo identifies an account as a requirement for online features. Make sure the console user selected when opening the game is the user whose online access you intend to use.
- Compatible hardware and software: Nintendo’s service FAQ lists a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch system with system menu version 6.0 or higher among its service requirements. The game’s current support information also discusses Switch 2 compatibility.
The Nintendo Switch Online membership and the game are separate purchases, according to Nintendo’s product page. The available official information here does not establish a current membership price, so check Nintendo’s current offer for your country rather than relying on an older price. A free or promotional trial, if offered on your account, still has to be active for the service to authorize online play.

Can you play with friends online without Nintendo Switch Online?
No: Nintendo says an active membership is required for Nintendo Switch Sports online multiplayer. If you do not have one, the Play Globally trial against computer-controlled opponents is the limited alternative, not a friends lobby.
That distinction matters when deciding whether to subscribe. Local play with people on the same system is separate; choosing an online mode to connect with friends is not. Nintendo’s support instructions also say online play requires an internet connection. The game therefore has two distinct multiplayer arrangements: same-system play and internet-based play, with the membership requirement applying to the latter.
Seeing a Play Globally menu item does not mean the console has reached human opponents. Without membership, Nintendo identifies the activity as a trial competition against computer competitors. To invite or meet real players online, activate the service and launch the online mode under the correct Nintendo Account.
How many people can play locally on one Switch?
Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions say local multiplayer on one system supports up to four players. That is the broad maximum, not a promise that every sport supports four simultaneous players or uses the same controller arrangement.

All sports support local multiplayer, but player count and controller requirements vary by sport. Some activities can be played at the same time, while others let players take turns; Nintendo gives Bowling and Archery as examples where players can choose between taking turns and simultaneous play. Its reviewed instructions do not provide a complete sport-by-sport player-count chart, so check the selected sport’s in-game setup rather than assuming a universal layout.
Local multiplayer is useful when everyone is sharing one console. It is different from online play with friends on separate systems, which falls under Nintendo’s online membership and internet requirements. A four-person gathering may therefore need fewer controllers than four people playing simultaneously, depending on whether the sport offers a turn-taking option.
Do you need extra Joy-Con controllers?
Possibly. The number and type of controllers depend on the sport, player count, and whether players are taking turns or playing simultaneously; Nintendo warns that extra accessories may be required for multiplayer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNintendo’s current FAQ lists paired Joy-Con 2 controllers, Joy-Con controllers, and single Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con controllers among the supported arrangements, depending on the sport. It also lists Joy-Con with a Leg Strap for applicable play. Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with the game, so do not count those as substitutes for the supported Joy-Con setup.
Before inviting a group, open the chosen sport and follow its player setup prompts. If the game asks for more controllers than you have, change the player arrangement where the sport allows it, take turns if that option is available, or add compatible Joy-Con controllers. The general four-player local limit does not tell you how many controllers a particular activity needs at once.
For shopping purposes, additional Joy-Con controllers are the most directly relevant accessory for local multiplayer. Buy only a controller type listed as compatible for your console and sport. A Pro Controller may work for other Switch games, but Nintendo specifically excludes Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers from this title.
Does Nintendo Switch Sports work in handheld mode?
No. Nintendo’s current FAQ says the game does not support Handheld Mode and recommends TV Mode on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, or Nintendo Switch OLED Model.

This affects setup as well as display: plan to play with the console in TV mode and the supported controllers for the selected sport. Nintendo’s current compatibility wording includes Switch 2, while the original product page is branded for Nintendo Switch; follow the current FAQ for the newer system terminology and controller compatibility details.
That means you should not plan on holding a fully assembled console in handheld mode for a quick motion-sports session. Dock the system, pair the supported Joy-Con arrangement, and leave enough room for players to move safely. The TV-mode recommendation applies whether you are playing alone, sharing the system locally, or preparing a local group.
Do you need the Leg Strap for Soccer?
Only for the applicable Leg-Strap Mode; it is not a requirement for every sport or every Soccer match. Nintendo’s product page says a Leg Strap is required for some Soccer gameplay, and the FAQ describes it as one of the control options.
Nintendo also says the Leg Strap is not compatible with Joy-Con 2 controllers. Check both the selected Soccer control option and controller type before setting up: the accessory is mode-specific, and owning it does not make it a universal requirement or a replacement for other supported controllers.

If you do not have the strap, choose a Soccer control option that does not call for it, where the game provides that choice. If you specifically want Leg-Strap Mode, confirm that you have a compatible Joy-Con and the strap before starting. Nintendo’s wording does not make the accessory necessary for the rest of the sports lineup.
How does voice chat work in Play with Friends?
Nintendo says voice chat in Play with Friends uses the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app. It requires the membership and app, and Nintendo Accounts belonging to people under 13 cannot use this voice-chat feature.
This is not a claim that voice chat is built into every mode. Nintendo’s current support information separately says Nintendo Switch 2 players can play while chatting with friends through GameChat. Treat that as a Switch 2 feature context, distinct from the Nintendo Switch Online app instructions for Play with Friends.

Plan the phone and app setup before the match rather than assuming that the console’s game audio automatically provides a group call. The age restriction applies to Nintendo Accounts under 13 for this app-based voice-chat feature. It does not change the separate rules for local play, Play Globally, or the game’s controller compatibility.
What should you check if online play does not work?
Start with the account and membership attached to the active console user, then check the internet connection. Nintendo’s game FAQ gives a specific recovery step for newly started memberships.
- Confirm the selected user. Close the game if needed, then open Nintendo Switch Sports under the correct user profile. Nintendo advises checking the user selected when launching the software.
- Confirm membership status. Verify that the selected user has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. A Play Globally trial against computers does not confirm access to full online multiplayer.
- Check internet access. Online play requires an internet connection. Local play on one system is a separate mode and is not a substitute for diagnosing the online connection.
- If the membership just began, retry after a short wait. Nintendo recommends closing the software and trying again after a short time when a player has just started a membership.
- Check software updates for online participants. Nintendo’s multiplayer setup instructions say each player using their own copy of the game must have updated software.
- Review the mode you selected. A computer-controlled trial is expected when membership is absent; it is not evidence that Nintendo’s online service is malfunctioning.
If those checks do not resolve the issue, consult Nintendo Support for the console and account-specific error rather than assuming that a particular sport or controller is the cause. Avoid buying a new accessory as a first troubleshooting step: controller compatibility affects setup, but it does not replace the account, membership, internet, and software requirements for online play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you buy for a multiplayer setup?
Nintendo Switch Sports and Nintendo Switch Online are separate purchases. If you do not own the game, look for the Nintendo Switch Sports game or a physical copy that matches your system and region. If you already own it and want local group play, additional compatible Joy-Con controllers are the most logical add-on because Nintendo says controller needs vary by sport. A Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap is relevant only if you intend to use the applicable Soccer mode.
Check the current Nintendo listing and retailer details for edition, platform compatibility, and availability. Do not assume that an Expansion Pack tier is necessary, and do not assume that a Pro Controller can replace Joy-Con. The right purchase depends on whether your priority is online access, more local players, or a specific Soccer control option.
Frequently Asked Questions

No. Nintendo’s membership feature information shows that online multiplayer is available with Nintendo Switch Online membership types, including those without the Expansion Pack. The game’s online requirement is an active membership, not a particular tier.
What Nintendo Switch system software version is required for Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo’s service FAQ lists Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch with system menu version 6.0 or higher among the service requirements. This is the service-level requirement, not a sport-specific setting.

Can I play Nintendo Switch Sports locally without Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes. Same-system local multiplayer is separate from the online subscription requirement. Nintendo says local play can support up to four players, although the exact player count and controller arrangement vary by sport.
