You may see “The program can’t start because nlslexicons081a.dll is missing from your computer.” Other messages include “NlsLexicons081a.dll was not found,” “Error loading NlsLexicons081a.dll,” or “NlsLexicons081a.dll could not be loaded.”
nlslexicons081a.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Natural Language Server component, not a meaningless generated filename. It is associated with Windows linguistic resources and SQL Server Full-Text Search, so the correct repair depends on which process is trying to load it.

The 60-second answer
Do not download this DLL from a random DLL website or copy it into System32.
First identify what failed:
- If Windows, several applications, or language-related features report the error, repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- If SQL Server, database indexing, word breakers, or full-text queries trigger it, repair or add SQL Server Full-Text Search.
- If only one application fails, find out whether that application is calling SQL Server or a Windows linguistic component.
- If the file was recently quarantined, verify the detection and file location before restoring anything.
The name refers to the Serbian (Latin) lexicon. The 081a suffix is the hexadecimal LCID for Serbian (Latin), decimal 2074. Microsoft’s SQL Server documentation lists it with NaturalLanguage6.dll and NlsData081a.dll as part of the Serbian (Latin) linguistic dependency set. Microsoft’s linguistic binary reference identifies NlsLexicons081a.dll as the dependent lexicon used by the relevant word breaker and stemmer.

What nlslexicons081a.dll actually is
This is a Natural Language Server data and code file used for language-aware processing. A word breaker separates text into searchable words, while a stemmer helps relate word forms during search. SQL Server Full-Text Search uses these linguistic components when processing indexed text and full-text queries.
Historical Microsoft file inventories list the DLL among Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1-era system files. Those inventories include both x86 and x64 copies. Reported historical versions include 6.0.6000.16386, 6.1.7600.16385, 6.2.9200.16384, and 6.3.9600.16384, with a reported size of approximately 6.72 MiB. These are historical component versions, not interchangeable downloads for modern Windows.
Its presence and location can vary by Windows release, language configuration, architecture, servicing state, and SQL Server installation. A missing-file dialog also does not prove that the named DLL itself is defective. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency, damaged component store, incorrect search path, permissions problem, or mismatched architecture.
It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Installing Visual C++ merely because a search result recommends it is not a verified repair for this component.
Find the owner before repairing anything
The path and process provide the most useful clues.
Check which application fails
- Note whether the message appears during Windows startup, when launching a particular program, or when starting SQL Server.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Details and look for the executable that remains open or crashes.
- If the failure happens during a database operation, check the SQL Server instance and the feature being used.
- Record whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit. Older 32-bit applications can load from different locations than 64-bit processes.
On 64-bit Windows, C:WindowsSystem32 conventionally contains 64-bit system binaries, while C:WindowsSysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. The names are confusing, but do not swap files between them.
Also check whether the error names a file under a Windows directory or under a SQL Server instance directory. Do not treat an application directory as proof that the application owns the DLL. It may simply be the process that exposed a Windows or SQL Server problem.

Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the failing program.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source SFC uses for protected system files. SFC then checks protected files and replaces damaged copies when a valid repair source is available. Microsoft documents this sequence in its Windows image repair guidance and System File Checker documentation.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If the original message remains, continue with the SQL Server and dependency checks below rather than repeatedly running the same commands.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When DISM reports that source files cannot be found, use installation media that closely matches the installed Windows edition, build, and architecture:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<matching-Windows-source> /LimitAccess
sfc /scannow
Replace the placeholder with a valid matching repair source. An arbitrary ISO or copied DLL is not a safe substitute.
If manually identifying the damaged component and matching repair source means hunting through several Windows versions and repeating SFC/DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it found; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional rather than required.
Fix 2: Repair SQL Server Full-Text Search
Use this path if the error appears while starting SQL Server, creating a full-text index, running a full-text query, or using a word breaker or stemmer.
Full-Text Search is an optional SQL Server component. Repairing Windows alone may not restore an instance-specific SQL Server installation.
Add or repair the feature through SQL Server Setup
- Locate the installation media for the same SQL Server release and edition.
- Run
setup.exeas administrator. - In SQL Server Installation Center, select Maintenance.
- Choose Repair for the affected instance if repair is available.
- If the feature was never installed, choose Installation and start the workflow for adding features to an existing instance.
- Select the correct SQL Server instance.
- Under Features to Install, select Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search.
- Continue through the prerequisite and feature checks.
- Complete Setup, restart any requested services or Windows, and test the full-text operation again.
Microsoft’s Full-Text Search setup guide explains that Setup must be rerun when the optional feature was not installed. The semantic-search installation instructions show the related feature selection.
If the failure began after a SQL Server upgrade, check the instance rather than assuming it will use the Windows copy. SQL Server upgrades can install Full-Text components per instance. Microsoft describes this behavior in its Full-Text Search upgrade documentation.
Success means Setup completes without a feature error and SQL Server can start or complete the full-text operation. If Setup reports missing prerequisites, a damaged instance, or a version mismatch, use installation media matching the existing instance and preserve a database backup before making further changes.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have removed or quarantined a valid component, particularly if the failure started immediately after a scan or cleanup.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Inspect detections that occurred when the DLL disappeared.
- Check the reported path, detection name, and action.
- Restore the file only if its location is expected and the file is verified as Microsoft-signed.
- If the location is suspicious, leave it quarantined and run a full scan instead.
- Repair Windows or SQL Server after the scan.
Microsoft explains the relevant controls in its Protection History guidance. Do not restore a DLL merely because its filename looks familiar. A malicious copy can use the same name.
Fix 4: Rule out architecture and dependency problems
A 32-bit application may search a different DLL location from a 64-bit application. SQL Server may also use its own linguistic binaries. Copying a 32-bit historical file into a 64-bit location, or the reverse, can create a second failure.
Check:
- Which executable reports the error.
- Whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the named path is under
System32,SysWOW64, or a SQL Server directory. - Whether related files such as
NaturalLanguage6.dllorNlsData081a.dllare also reported missing. - Whether the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- Whether the error started after an update, SQL Server installation or upgrade, language-feature change, disk cleanup, or antivirus event.
If a “specified module could not be found” message names nlslexicons081a.dll, the missing item can be a dependency rather than the named file. Repair the owning component instead of replacing individual files.
Fix 5: Update Windows and hardware drivers after a recent change
A driver is not the usual owner of this linguistic DLL, but a recent system change can expose component-store or application-loading problems.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the recent change.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test again.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
Avoid changing unrelated drivers as a guess. If checking dozens of devices and matching driver versions is the manual bottleneck, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation through the full version is optional, and a driver update is not a replacement for repairing Windows or SQL Server.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why downloading or registering the DLL is usually wrong
There is no verified standalone Microsoft download package for this individual DLL. Random DLL repositories can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible historical version, or a file without the surrounding linguistic dependencies. The download may make the original dialog disappear while leaving the component store or SQL Server installation damaged.
regsvr32 is also generally not applicable. Microsoft documents it for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A Natural Language Server lexicon or data component is not normally a self-registering COM server, so running commands such as these is not a reliable fix:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →regsvr32 nlslexicons081a.dll
Do not manually copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or an application directory. Version, architecture, servicing state, permissions, and dependent files must match. Manual copying can overwrite a valid newer component.

- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore affects system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs. It is not malware removal and does not replace SQL Server repair. Microsoft’s System Restore documentation explains the process.
For persistent Windows failures, an in-place Windows repair using matching installation media may be appropriate. For persistent SQL Server failures, collect the SQL Server Setup logs and instance details before contacting Microsoft or your database administrator.
