If Windows 11 does not show the usual Replace, Skip, or Keep both prompt, start by changing one File Explorer setting: open View > Options (also labeled Change folder and search options), select the View tab, clear Hide folder merge conflicts, then choose Apply and OK. If the warning is still missing, copy from the file’s real source folder rather than Quick Access or Recent, reset Folder Options, and check whether a command-line switch is suppressing confirmation. The behavior also differs between copy and move operations, especially across NTFS volumes and network shares.
Why is Windows not asking whether to replace or skip a file?
File Explorer can hide the conflict prompt through the Hide folder merge conflicts option. When that option is enabled, merging folders may proceed without displaying the normal confirmation box, so a destination that already contains a file with the same name does not produce the expected Replace, Skip, or Keep both choices.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The option is stored per Windows user account. A second account on the same PC can therefore show different behavior. The setting applies to Explorer’s interactive copy and move operations; it does not control every copy utility or script.
How do I restore the Replace, Skip, or Keep both dialog?
- Open File Explorer.
- Select View on the command bar, open Options, and choose Change folder and search options if that wording appears.
- In Folder Options, select the View tab.
- Clear Hide folder merge conflicts.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test with a disposable file in an ordinary local source folder and a different destination folder. Copy the actual file into the destination and confirm that Explorer offers its conflict choices when a same-named file already exists.
This is the primary fix identified by Windows troubleshooting guidance. It changes whether Explorer displays folder-merge conflicts; it does not repair a damaged drive, alter file contents, or override a script that explicitly suppresses prompts.

Could Quick Access or Recent be preventing the duplicate warning?
Yes. Quick Access and Recent views can contain links, pinned locations, and entries from more than one physical folder. They are views of locations, not always a single unambiguous source path.
Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance says an item in Quick Access must be opened before it can be cut and pasted. Open the entry, inspect the address bar, and perform the operation from that actual folder. Windows 11 version 22H2 and later place common folders such as Desktop and Documents in Quick Access by default, so this ambiguity is easy to encounter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA Microsoft Q&A moderator explained that a replacement prompt may not appear when copying links because Quick Access can contain identically named files from multiple locations. Explorer cannot reliably determine which physical source should be compared with the destination. The practical rule is simple: navigate to the real source folder, select the file there, and then copy or move it.

What should I do if clearing the setting does not help?
Reset Folder Options
Return to File Explorer > View > Options > View and select Restore Defaults, then apply the change and repeat the local test. This resets view-related choices that may be interacting with the conflict setting. It does not delete files or change their contents.
Use a temporary folder as an isolation test
Create a temporary folder on the same local drive, place a copy of a test file in it, and copy that file to a second temporary folder. A Microsoft Q&A report found that routing a transfer through a temporary folder restored the dialog for one user. Treat this as a diagnostic experiment, not a guaranteed fix: it helps distinguish an Explorer path or view problem from an issue tied to the original folders.
Confirm that the destination really contains a same-named item
Explorer only needs to ask about replacement when the operation reaches a name collision. Verify that the source and destination are not merely showing similar names from different paths, and that you are not testing with a newly generated filename. Use a small, clearly named test file so the result is unambiguous.

Can command-line options suppress the overwrite prompt?
Yes. The command-line copy command has its own overwrite switches, independent of Folder Options. Microsoft documents:
| Switch | Effect | Use when |
|---|---|---|
/y |
Suppresses the prompt asking whether to overwrite an existing destination file. | A script or controlled batch job is expected to overwrite without pausing. |
/-y |
Prompts you to confirm that an existing destination file should be overwritten. | You want an interactive confirmation in Command Prompt. |
If a batch file, scheduled task, or support script is involved, inspect the command itself before changing Explorer. A command using /y will never reproduce Explorer’s graphical warning, even when Hide folder merge conflicts is cleared. Conversely, changing Explorer cannot force a background script to display a dialog.
Does copying behave differently from moving?
It can, because Windows applies NTFS permissions according to where the operation occurs. Microsoft explains that a copied file or folder generally inherits permissions from the destination parent folder. A move within the same NTFS volume normally retains the original permissions instead of inheriting the destination folder’s permissions.

| Operation | Typical permission result | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Copy within or between volumes | The new item generally inherits permissions from the destination parent. | Whether the destination account can read, modify, or delete the resulting item. |
| Move within the same NTFS volume | The item normally keeps its existing permissions. | Whether its original access rules still make sense in the new folder. |
| Move to another volume | Windows handles it as a copy followed by a delete, so destination permissions can apply. | Both destination access and the ability to remove the source item. |
These permission results are separate from whether Explorer displays a duplicate-name dialog. A missing prompt and an “access denied” message can occur in the same transfer but have different causes.

How should I compare Explorer, Command Prompt, and a transfer client?
Choose the workflow based on the source path, the need for an interactive decision, and whether the transfer is local or remote.
| Workflow | Source identification | Overwrite confirmation | Best fit | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| File Explorer | Uses the path currently opened in the window; Quick Access and Recent can be links. | Controlled by the folder-merge conflict setting and the operation context. | Interactive local copy or move where you want Replace, Skip, or Keep both choices. | Verify the address-bar path before starting a transfer. |
Command Prompt copy |
Uses the paths written in the command or batch file. | /y suppresses confirmation; /-y requests it. |
Repeatable jobs and scripted transfers. | A script can silently overwrite when the switch or surrounding logic allows it. |
| Remote-transfer client | Uses explicit local and remote paths. | Many clients expose an overwrite-confirmation option; background transfers commonly suppress confirmations. | Transfers involving a server or network endpoint. | Check the client’s interactive/background mode before launching the job. |
WinSCP documentation, for example, describes an Overwriting of files checkbox that enables confirmation during transfers and notes that background transfers suppress confirmations by default. The same principle applies to other transfer clients: inspect their overwrite and background-transfer settings rather than relying on Explorer’s preferences.

What is the safest troubleshooting sequence?
- Reproduce the symptom locally. Use a small test file in a normal source folder and a separate destination folder. Do not begin with a network share, cloud link, or Quick Access entry.
- Check the merge-conflict option. In Folder Options, clear Hide folder merge conflicts, apply the change, and repeat the test.
- Reset view settings if necessary. Use Restore Defaults on the Folder Options View tab, then test again.
- Verify the physical path. Open the Quick Access or Recent item, read the address bar, and perform the copy or move from that folder.
- Separate Explorer from scripts. If a batch file or command prompt is involved, remove an unintended
/yor use/-ywhen an interactive overwrite decision is required. - Check permissions and location. Determine whether the operation stays on one NTFS volume, crosses volumes, or uses a network share. Confirm that the account has the needed rights at both ends.
- Escalate network failures. If the broader problem includes errors copying, moving, renaming, or deleting files on a share, use Microsoft’s File and Folder troubleshooter rather than treating the missing dialog as the only fault.
Does this apply to Windows 10?
The same Folder Options path is available in Windows 10 and Windows 11, and Microsoft’s File Explorer instructions cover both systems. However, Windows 10 reached the end of free support on October 14, 2025. For a current repair, prioritize Windows 11 instructions and use Windows 10 only where the interface still matches your installation.
What should I check before starting a large transfer?
- Open the source folder directly and confirm its full path in the address bar.
- Test the intended operation with one disposable file before selecting a large folder.
- Decide whether you want an interactive overwrite decision or an unattended job.
- For scripts, review every overwrite switch, especially
/y. - For remote transfers, ensure background mode is not configured to suppress confirmations.
- After a move across volumes, verify both destination permissions and whether the source was successfully removed.
- Keep a backup of irreplaceable data; a confirmation dialog is not a substitute for recovery copies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does “Hide folder merge conflicts” hide every overwrite warning in Windows?
No. It affects Explorer’s folder-merge conflict behavior. Command-line tools, scheduled jobs, and transfer clients have separate overwrite controls, and permission or network errors are not replaced by this dialog.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why do I sometimes see “Keep both” instead of only Replace or Skip?
Explorer can preserve both items by renaming one copy when the names collide. The available choices depend on the operation, the item types, and whether Windows can compare the source and destination paths unambiguously.
Can a different Windows account show the duplicate prompt on the same computer?
Yes. Folder view and conflict preferences are stored per account, so another user profile may have a different setting even on the same installation.
What if the dialog is missing only on a network share?
First reproduce the operation in two local folders. If the prompt works locally but share operations fail or skip expected choices, investigate share permissions, connectivity, and the remote transfer method, then run Microsoft’s File and Folder troubleshooter for the broader share problem.
