Spoilers for FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, including the Forgotten Capital and ending. The argument behind this provocative headline is not that every player dislikes Aerith’s fate. It is that Rebirth’s attempt to preserve the original story’s weight while making its outcome uncertain sets up expectations that can pull in opposite directions: some players want the familiar scene’s emotional clarity, while others want the remake’s new mysteries to lead somewhere unmistakably different.
What Rebirth changes—and what it keeps
Square Enix describes FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH as a standalone story in a three-part remake project, following Cloud and his companions beyond Midgar to the Forgotten Capital. Its product page calls the characters’ fates “unwritten.” That phrase signals uncertainty, but it does not by itself promise that the story will discard the original’s major events.
Producer Yoshinori Kitase has said that most major elements of the original were retained. He explained that the Whispers were added to “shake up” the storyline and create anticipation about where events were going. In the same PlayStation Blog interview, Kitase called Aerith’s fate “one of the most important themes” in Rebirth and said the added detail in the characters’ portrayal should bring “a great breadth of emotion.” These are statements of creative intent, not evidence that players experienced the intended effect.
Creative director Tetsuya Nomura declined to explain the ending before release, saying he wanted players to experience it for themselves rather than hear about it second-hand. That choice protects the surprise, but it also leaves the game’s new uncertainties open to interpretation.

Why the ending can frustrate opposite expectations
Players who wanted the original’s emotional clarity
For players who know the original, the scene at the Forgotten Capital carries a particular dramatic function. They may judge Rebirth by whether it makes the event and its emotional consequences as clear and affecting as before. Hamaguchi later described a design goal of keeping players unsure about what would happen to Aerith until the end. GamesRadar’s account of his comments says the finale makes the scene’s immediate implication less clear than in the original, while retaining the fatal outcome. Uncertainty can create suspense, but it can also make a pivotal moment harder to read.
Players expecting a visible break from the familiar story
Other players may see the Whispers and the language of unwritten fates as a promise that the remake will substantially change what happens. If the ending retains the fatal outcome, that can feel less like a new destination than a more ambiguous route to a familiar one. The available statements support both sides of the tension: Square Enix says the project retains most major elements, while Kitase says the Whispers were introduced to unsettle the storyline.

Three ways to judge the scene
Rather than asking only whether Rebirth repeats or changes the original, it helps to separate three questions:

- Dramatic function: Does the scene still carry the weight and consequence associated with the original?
- Clarity: Can the player tell what Cloud has witnessed, and what the scene asks them to feel in the moment?
- Suspense: Does uncertainty make the sequence more compelling, or does it blunt its emotional impact?
Those questions can produce different answers. A player may welcome the added suspense but wish the moment were clearer; another may value the original’s directness and find the new ambiguity distracting. The game’s design aims do not decide which response is correct.
Why timing and presentation matter
Director Naoki Hamaguchi has discussed adjusting story elements so the player’s emotional pacing aligns with the flow of time, with scenes undergoing repeated revision. That context helps explain how a remake can alter timing, staging, or emphasis without necessarily abandoning its overarching story. In an ending built around a familiar event and deliberate uncertainty, those presentation choices can shape whether the scene feels like a meaningful reinterpretation or an obscured one.

The account of Rebirth’s ending supports a careful distinction: the immediate scene is presented with more ambiguity than in the original, while the reported fatal outcome remains. That does not settle every question about memory, worlds, or Aerith’s role in a later installment. Treating those unresolved matters as confirmed answers would go beyond what the developers’ comments and the reported ending establish.
So “no one will be happy” works best as a pointed argument about a difficult creative balance, not a literal claim about every player. Rebirth tries to preserve the force of a known story while making its path less certain. Whether that uncertainty deepens Aerith’s fate or weakens its impact depends on what each player wanted the remake to change.
