“The program can’t start because nvfatbinaryloader.dll is missing from your computer.” If nvfatbinaryloader.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or appears in a crash report, repair the NVIDIA driver before downloading individual DLL files.
Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that matches your case:
- Every NVIDIA-accelerated program fails: reinstall the NVIDIA graphics driver with a clean installation.
- Only one game or application fails: verify or repair that application first, then reinstall it if necessary.
- The error started after a driver update, GPU change, or Windows reinstall: install the correct NVIDIA driver again.
- A 32-bit program fails but 64-bit programs work: check the 32-bit driver component and application architecture.
- Your antivirus quarantined the file: inspect the detection, update the security software, and reinstall the driver rather than restoring an unknown copy.
- A crash report names the DLL but no missing-file dialog appears: treat it as an application or driver crash, not proof that the file is absent.
- Several unrelated Windows components are failing: repair Windows with DISM and SFC after addressing the NVIDIA driver.
What nvfatbinaryloader.dll is
nvfatbinaryloader.dll is a genuine NVIDIA graphics-driver component. It is associated with loading NVIDIA “fat binary” GPU code used by parts of the CUDA, OpenCL, and graphics software stack.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
It is not a Windows system component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX DLL, or .NET component. The program that installed it is normally an NVIDIA display-driver package, although CUDA applications, games, 3D software, video tools, and other GPU-accelerated programs may depend on the driver component being present.
NVIDIA’s public symbol server lists both nvfatbinaryloader32.dll and nvfatbinaryloader64.dll. On 64-bit Windows, the corresponding driver files are commonly found in:

%WINDIR%System32for the native 64-bit component%WINDIR%SysWOW64for the 32-bit component
The names are counterintuitive: System32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL. Microsoft explains this separation in its documentation about running 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows.
Historical file records list a 32-bit build as 25.21.14.1917 and a 64-bit build as 26.21.14.3160, but those are not a current compatibility table. Do not treat either version as the only correct one for your computer.
First, determine whether the file is missing
A Windows loader message and an application crash report require different responses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMissing-file messages
These usually appear when launching a program:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because nvfatbinaryloader.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting nvfatbinaryloader.dll.”
- “Error loading nvfatbinaryloader.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located…”
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by the NVIDIA DLL is missing. It does not always mean the named DLL itself has disappeared.
Crash reports
If Event Viewer, a game log, or a diagnostic report says that nvfatbinaryloader.dll was the faulting module, do not delete or replace it immediately. A crash may be caused by an NVIDIA driver defect, a damaged game plug-in, an incompatible GPU binary, overclocking, or corrupted application data.
In that situation, record the application name, whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit, and when the crashes began. Then follow the driver and application checks below.
Fix 1: Reinstall the NVIDIA driver cleanly
This is the most likely repair for a genuinely missing or damaged nvfatbinaryloader.dll.

1. Record your GPU and Windows version
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the NVIDIA GPU model.
- Press Windows key + R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Record whether you are running Windows 10 or Windows 11 and whether the system is 64-bit.
To check the system type:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
2. Download the matching driver
Use NVIDIA’s official driver selector and choose the driver for the exact GPU and Windows edition. Avoid choosing a driver merely because its version number resembles an old file listing.
If the computer is a laptop or branded desktop, the manufacturer may also provide a customized driver. Start with the computer manufacturer’s supported driver if NVIDIA’s generic installer does not recognize the GPU or repeatedly fails.
3. Run a clean installation
- Close games, video editors, CUDA tools, and other GPU-accelerated applications.
- Start the NVIDIA driver installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose Custom (Advanced) when the installer offers the choice.
- Continue to the component list.
- Select Perform a clean installation.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows, even if the installer does not insist on a restart.
A clean installation resets NVIDIA settings and replaces driver-related files. The exact wording can vary between driver generations.
After restarting, launch the program that produced the error. If it opens normally, the driver repair restored the correct architecture and dependencies. If the installer reports that no compatible hardware was found, check Device Manager for the GPU name and any warning icon before trying random DLL copies.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Manually hunting through driver versions and guessing which of several installed packages is stale can take longer than repairing the driver stack. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while the repair or driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and the official NVIDIA or computer-manufacturer driver remains the appropriate source.
Fix 2: Repair the affected game or application
If only one program fails, the NVIDIA driver may be intact and the application may have damaged files, plug-ins, or GPU integration files.
Use the launcher’s repair option
Open the game or application launcher and look for a command named Verify, Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair. Run it, allow the process to finish, and restart Windows before testing again.
If the launcher has no repair command:
- Close the application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair or Reset, where provided.
Do not use Reset until you understand whether it removes local settings or saved data.

If the program still fails, uninstall it from the same Apps screen, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the application vendor’s official installer. Reinstalling the application does not replace a damaged NVIDIA display driver, so perform Fix 1 as well if other GPU programs show the same problem.
Do not assume reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore this NVIDIA driver DLL. Those packages may be required by the application, but they are not the normal source of nvfatbinaryloader.dll.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit NVIDIA component. A 64-bit application needs the 64-bit component. Installing one DLL into an application folder cannot reliably solve an architecture mismatch and may produce 0xc000007b or another loading error.
Check the application’s documentation or launcher properties to determine its architecture. Then repair the complete NVIDIA installation instead of copying files between:

System32SysWOW64DriverStore- The application’s installation directory
On 64-bit Windows, Microsoft documents the System32 and SysWOW64 file-system redirection rules. Do not rename the folders or place a 64-bit DLL in a 32-bit program directory.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a driver file after detecting an altered or suspicious file. This is a possibility, not proof that antivirus software is responsible.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the NVIDIA driver directory.
- Read the detection name and affected path.
- Update Windows Security and your NVIDIA driver.
- Run a full scan if the detection is unclear.
Do not restore an arbitrary file simply because its name is nvfatbinaryloader.dll. Reinstall the NVIDIA driver so Windows receives a verified copy. Add an exclusion only when you understand the detection and have confirmed the software is trustworthy.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when Windows Update is failing, several unrelated programs have damaged system files, or Windows reports broader corruption. It is secondary for this problem because nvfatbinaryloader.dll normally comes from NVIDIA, not Windows.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Then run this separate command:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the NVIDIA driver if the DLL is still missing.
Microsoft recommends using DISM to repair the Windows image and then using SFC to check protected system files.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real issue is an incomplete NVIDIA installation. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. It is optional and does not replace reinstalling the NVIDIA driver when that is the source of the missing file.
Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
Do not run:
regsvr32 nvfatbinaryloader.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM components. A graphics-driver runtime DLL is normally loaded by the application and NVIDIA driver stack, not registered as a COM component.
The command may produce an entry-point error and will not replace a missing driver. Microsoft describes the command’s intended use in its regsvr32 documentation.

Avoid manual DLL downloads
Do not download nvfatbinaryloader.dll from a random DLL website, copy it from another computer, or use an automated DLL repair utility that does not establish the file’s source.
A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to the wrong NVIDIA driver branch, have the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. It can also hide the real problem, such as a damaged DriverStore installation or an application that is crashing for another reason.
Use the official NVIDIA driver selector or your computer manufacturer’s support page. Install the complete driver package rather than replacing one file by hand.

If the normal repair still fails
Work through these checks:
- Open Device Manager and confirm the NVIDIA GPU appears under Display adapters.
- Right-click the GPU and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a device status error.
- Check Driver for the provider, date, and version.
- If the failure began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart and test the application again.
- If every NVIDIA installation fails, check available disk space and Windows Update status.
- Review the NVIDIA installer log for the failure reason.
- Run a full security scan if files repeatedly disappear.
- Test a new Windows user profile if only one profile is affected.
- Check disk health if files become corrupted repeatedly.
Do not mix files from multiple NVIDIA driver versions. If a clean installation completes but one program continues to crash, focus on its plug-ins, launcher repair, compatibility settings, GPU selection, and recent updates. A crash report naming nvfatbinaryloader.dll does not by itself prove that the DLL is defective.
FAQ
Is nvfatbinaryloader.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an NVIDIA driver component, not a standard Windows system file.
Is nvfatbinaryloader.dll safe?
A copy installed with a genuine NVIDIA driver and carrying a valid signature is expected. An arbitrary copy downloaded from the internet is not trustworthy merely because its filename is correct.
Should I install the CUDA Toolkit?
Not as a universal repair. CUDA Toolkit packages and NVIDIA display-driver packages are related but not interchangeable. Install CUDA only when the affected software specifically requires that toolkit or runtime.
Why does only one game report the error?
That game may have damaged files, a broken plug-in, or an incompatible GPU integration. Use its Verify or Repair function, then reinstall it if necessary. If other GPU programs also fail, repair the NVIDIA driver first.

No. A crash report identifies a module involved in the crash, not necessarily a file that should be removed. Repair the driver and investigate the application before changing files in System32 or SysWOW64.
What if the NVIDIA installer keeps failing?
Confirm the GPU model, Windows edition, disk space, and Device Manager status. Remove conflicting old driver software only through supported methods, then contact NVIDIA or the computer manufacturer with the installer log.
