If the NVIDIA overlay shows an Intel or AMD adapter, reports a different GPU number than Windows, or disagrees with the game’s FPS counter, it is usually measuring a different part of the graphics pipeline—not necessarily malfunctioning. Hybrid laptops can expose both integrated and dedicated GPUs, while rendered FPS, displayed FPS, and frame-generation-inclusive FPS are separate measurements. Open the overlay with Alt+Z, toggle statistics with Alt+R, then identify the adapter label, FPS definition, frame cap, V-sync state, driver timing, and other overlay hooks before changing settings.
Why does the NVIDIA overlay show the wrong GPU?
The overlay can legitimately list more than one graphics adapter. Hybrid laptops commonly combine an integrated Intel or AMD GPU with a dedicated NVIDIA GPU, and multi-GPU desktops can expose several adapters. NVIDIA FrameView labels detected vendors as GPUN (NVIDIA), GPUA (AMD), and GPUI (Intel). When multiple adapters are available, its summary can identify them as GPU0 and GPU1.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat label tells you which adapters the system detected; it does not, by itself, prove which one rendered the game. On an Optimus or MSHybrid laptop, the integrated GPU may drive the display while the NVIDIA GPU renders the game. Windows can also assign one adapter to a game while another handles desktop composition or the physical display connection.
How can I tell which GPU is actually rendering?
- Note the vendor suffix (N, A, or I) and the adapter index (GPU0 or GPU1) shown by the overlay.
- Check the game’s graphics or display menu for a selected adapter. Some games name the adapter; others show only an index.
- Review the per-app graphics assignment in Windows and the corresponding NVIDIA graphics setting. Make sure the game executable, not only its launcher, has the intended preference.
- Use the game’s own GPU information or a second monitoring utility to correlate activity with the adapter shown in the overlay.
An Intel or AMD entry is therefore not automatically an error. It becomes suspicious when the game is explicitly assigned to the NVIDIA adapter, the NVIDIA GPU shows no rendering activity, and the overlay consistently reports the integrated adapter after you have checked the game’s assignment.

Why does the NVIDIA FPS counter disagree with the game?
FPS counters can be accurate and still disagree because they count different events. FrameView distinguishes rendered FPS, measured near the beginning of the graphics pipeline, from displayed FPS, measured at the end. Queueing, synchronization, presentation, and display refresh can make those values diverge.
Frame generation adds another difference. A counter that includes generated frames can show a higher figure than one that counts only frames produced by the game’s base renderer. Compare like with like before deciding that one number is wrong.

| Reading | What it represents | Why it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Rendered FPS | Frames produced at the beginning of the graphics pipeline | Can exceed what reaches the display when frames are queued, dropped, or synchronized |
| Displayed FPS | Frames reaching the presentation/display end of the pipeline | Is constrained by V-sync, refresh timing, and presentation behavior |
| Generated-inclusive FPS | Base-game frames plus frames created by a frame-generation feature | A second counter may report only base-game frames |
| 1% Low FPS | The average performance of the slowest 1% of frames in FrameView’s metric | It is a percentile-style smoothness indicator, not the current instantaneous FPS |
How do V-sync and frame caps make FPS look incorrect?
V-sync synchronizes presentation to the monitor’s refresh cycle and can limit displayed performance. If a game’s cap or V-sync is active, a displayed-FPS counter may settle at a refresh-rate value or a clean fraction of it even when rendered FPS fluctuates.
Check the game’s frame-rate limit, driver-level frame limiter, V-sync mode, variable-refresh setting, and any limiter in a second overlay. A value pinned to 60, 120, 144, or another panel-related number is often a synchronization result rather than evidence that the overlay selected the wrong GPU.
How do I verify that the correct NVIDIA overlay is active?
The current NVIDIA App/GeForce Experience workflow places the feature under Settings > Features > In-Game Overlay. The overlay’s keyboard shortcuts then let you inspect the exact HUD configuration.

- Open the NVIDIA overlay with Alt+Z. If nothing appears, the in-game overlay may be disabled or unavailable for that application.
- Open Settings > Statistics > Configure heads up display and select the metrics you want to see.
- Press Alt+R to toggle the statistics panel. NVIDIA documents this as the default shortcut for turning the statistics overlay on and off.
- Press Alt+Shift+R to cycle through available metric views when you need a different presentation.
Do this check before comparing numbers. A statistics panel, a full performance HUD, and a game’s built-in counter may use different measurement points and options.
What should I do after an NVIDIA driver update?
Reboot the computer before interpreting an invalid, blank, or N/A reading. NVIDIA’s FrameView guidance warns that after a new driver installation or update, FrameView may report invalid or N/A data. A restart reloads the display driver and the services that provide telemetry.
- Close the game and all overlay tools.
- Restart Windows rather than only signing out or relaunching the game.
- Open the NVIDIA overlay again with Alt+Z, then enable statistics with Alt+R.
- Test a supported game or graphics API before concluding that telemetry is still broken.
If the problem began immediately after the update and survives a reboot, record the driver version, game, API, GPU labels, and whether the value is blank, N/A, or simply different from another counter. Those details distinguish a telemetry failure from a measurement-definition mismatch.
Can RTSS, FRAPS, or another overlay cause wrong readings?
Yes. NVIDIA notes that FRAPS, RTSS, and other tools can hook similar application processes and interfere with FrameView capture or overlay presentation. Multiple hooks can compete for the same game process, leaving one counter incomplete or causing another to display stale or missing data.
Use one overlay at a time first
- Exit the game and quit competing monitoring tools from the notification area.
- Start FrameView or the NVIDIA statistics overlay before launching the game.
- Wait for its overlay to appear, then start the other tool if you need a direct comparison.
- Compare only after both tools are visible and confirm that each is attached to the same executable.
Exclude an unintended executable
NVIDIA documents an exclude-list file at %ProgramData%NVIDIA CorporationFrameViewExcludeList.overlay.txt. Add the executable that should not be hooked, following the file’s existing format, then restart the affected overlay and game. Use the actual game executable when a launcher and game process are separate.

Do not treat a missing overlay as proof that the GPU is idle until you have isolated competing hooks. A tool can capture data successfully while another tool prevents the on-screen panel from appearing.
Are all games and APIs supported by the overlay?
No. FrameView documents that overlay information is not shown for DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 applications even though data capture is supported. Other API, exclusive-fullscreen, protected-content, or game-mode limitations can also affect visibility.
- Test the same overlay in a modern supported API mode if the game offers one.
- Switch between borderless and exclusive fullscreen only as a diagnostic; keep the mode that fits your normal setup afterward.
- Check whether the game runs through a launcher, compatibility layer, or alternate executable and ensure the intended process is being monitored.
- Use a capture log or the game’s own counter when an on-screen HUD is unavailable for that API.
Support limitations explain a panel that says N/A or never appears; they do not indicate that the NVIDIA adapter has disappeared from Windows.
How do I troubleshoot “N/A” or a blank NVIDIA FPS panel?
Work from the least disruptive checks to the conditions most likely to block capture.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the feature: In the NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience, go to Settings > Features and enable In-Game Overlay.
- Confirm the shortcut: Press Alt+Z, then Alt+R. If the overlay opens but statistics do not, inspect Statistics > Configure heads up display.
- Restart after updates: Reboot Windows if the issue followed a driver installation or update.
- Check the application: Verify the game uses an API and display mode for which overlay information is available.
- Remove hook conflicts: Close RTSS, FRAPS, and other overlays, launch the NVIDIA overlay first, and add an unintended executable to the documented exclude list if needed.
- Check adapter assignment: Compare the overlay’s GPUN/GPUA/GPUI label and GPU0/GPU1 index with Windows and the game’s selected adapter.
- Re-test with matched metrics: Compare rendered to rendered, displayed to displayed, and generated-inclusive to generated-inclusive FPS.
If only one game fails while other supported games work, focus on that game’s API, executable, anti-cheat or display mode. If every game fails after a reboot, focus on overlay enablement, driver state, and process hooks.

What is the correct way to compare two FPS counters?
Write down the conditions for both readings instead of comparing the headline number alone. The following checklist prevents most false “wrong FPS” diagnoses.
| Comparison point | What to record |
|---|---|
| Pipeline position | Rendered or displayed FPS |
| Frame generation | Whether generated frames are included |
| Adapter identity | Vendor suffix and GPU0/GPU1 index |
| Synchronization | V-sync, variable refresh, and frame-cap settings |
| Software timing | Whether the issue started after a driver installation or update |
| Hooks | Which overlays and monitoring utilities were active, and which launched first |
Run the comparison in the same scene, after the game has finished loading, with identical graphics settings. A short-lived difference while a level streams assets is less meaningful than a persistent difference under steady workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is the NVIDIA overlay actually showing the wrong GPU?
The label is more likely to be genuinely misleading when the game is assigned to the NVIDIA adapter, the NVIDIA GPU shows sustained rendering activity, and the overlay repeatedly attributes the workload to an integrated adapter after you have ruled out GPU0/GPU1 indexing. A stale reading after a driver update or a hook conflict is another plausible fault.
Conversely, an integrated-GPU label is expected when the game is running on that adapter by design, when the display path is handled by the integrated GPU, or when the overlay is listing every detected adapter rather than naming the renderer. Verify assignment and activity before changing global graphics settings.
What should I avoid changing while diagnosing the overlay?
- Do not disable the integrated GPU on a hybrid laptop as a first step; it may be responsible for the internal display path.
- Do not infer performance from one instantaneous FPS sample, especially when frame generation or streaming is active.
- Do not run several hook-based overlays during the initial test.
- Do not treat N/A immediately after a driver update as a hardware failure; reboot first.
- Do not compare a displayed-FPS value with a rendered-FPS value and call one inaccurate without matching definitions.
Does the overlay provide a universal accuracy guarantee?
No universal accuracy percentage is established by the cited NVIDIA documentation. The reliable interpretation is contextual: identify the metric definition, adapter, synchronization state, software version timing, and active hooks. FrameView’s documented terms and limitations explain why two valid counters can disagree without either being defective.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my laptop show Intel graphics when it has an NVIDIA GPU?
Hybrid laptops can use the integrated adapter for the display path while routing game rendering to the dedicated NVIDIA adapter. Check the game’s selected adapter and Windows per-app graphics assignment before changing hardware settings.
Why is my FPS lower than the monitor refresh rate even with a powerful GPU?
Displayed FPS can be limited by V-sync, a frame cap, or presentation timing. Compare the game’s cap and synchronization settings with the counter’s pipeline definition; rendered FPS may still be higher.
Will frame generation make the NVIDIA overlay FPS look inflated?
It can, if the overlay includes generated frames while the game’s counter reports only base-rendered frames. Compare counters that use the same generated-inclusive or base-game definition.
Why did the overlay stop working after I installed a driver?
NVIDIA warns that FrameView may show invalid or N/A data after a driver installation or update. Restart Windows, then retest the overlay before troubleshooting game settings or hardware.
