How the NWSL regular season and playoffs work in 2026
One table, 30 games per club
The NWSL’s 16 clubs compete in a single table. Every club plays 30 regular-season games, split evenly between 15 home matches and 15 away matches, under the 2026 competition rules. The league’s announced season footprint is 248 matches in total, including the Challenge Cup and the eight-team playoffs; that figure is not the regular-season match count alone. The 2026 schedule announcement says no official NWSL matches will be staged from June 1 through June 28.
Eight teams compete for the championship
The top eight teams qualify for the postseason. In the quarterfinals, seeds meet in this order: 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, and 4 vs. 5. The higher seed hosts quarterfinals and semifinals, subject to venue availability. Each round is single elimination, and the semifinal winners meet in the championship. The 2026 championship is scheduled for November 21, according to the league’s schedule announcement.

How England’s WSL schedule and promotion playoff differ
A 14-club double round-robin in 2026/27
For 2026/27, the Barclays WSL is set to expand to 14 clubs and retain its double round-robin format, in which teams meet home and away. WSL Football’s expansion announcement confirms the club count and format. The season is scheduled to begin on the weekend of September 4–6, 2026, and end on the weekend of May 21–23, 2027, according to the 2026/27 dates announcement. These are season-specific dates, not a claim that every WSL season follows the same calendar.
The playoff is about staying in or entering the WSL
The English playoff described by WSL Football is a boundary between divisions, not a knockout race for the WSL title. In the 2025/26 promotion route, WSL2’s first- and second-place teams are automatically promoted. The third-place WSL2 club can claim the remaining WSL place by beating the WSL’s 12th-place club in a one-off match. WSL Football described this as a new feature associated with the season’s expansion in its promotion and relegation playoff announcement. This distinction matters: the NWSL postseason determines its champion, while the cited English playoff determines who holds a place in the WSL.

What this comparison does not establish about other leagues
There is no single “other leagues” format to compare against. Current official schedules and rules for Liga F, the Frauen-Bundesliga, and a wider set of national competitions are not established here, so their season calendars, match totals, and postseason systems should be checked against their own current league sources before drawing comparisons.
