How the four word connections work
REALM OF EXPERTISE
AREA, DOMAIN, FIELD, and SPHERE can each refer to a subject, sphere, or area of knowledge or activity. The category hinges on these overlapping meanings rather than on a literal physical place.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
FIDDLE, HORN, RECORDER, and TRIANGLE are all instruments. The triangle is the small percussion instrument, not the geometric shape.
#1 Best Overall
USED TO REDIRECT TRAFFIC
BARRIER, CONE, FLAG, and FLARE are objects that can be used to direct or divert traffic. A cone is easy to misread as a shape, but in this group it is a traffic-control object.
FOOD ___
Put “food” before each word: food chain, food fight, food processor, and food pyramid.
Rank #2
The tempting shape overlap
CONE, PYRAMID, and SPHERE can all suggest three-dimensional shapes, which may make them look like the start of a category. But that set has only three words, and each belongs to a different completed group: CONE is used to redirect traffic, PYRAMID completes FOOD ___, and SPHERE belongs with the realm-of-expertise terms. Testing a possible theme against four words before submitting helps avoid committing to an attractive but incomplete pattern.

Connections asks players to sort sixteen words into four groups of four based on a shared connection. Category colors indicate increasing difficulty, from yellow as the most straightforward to purple as the trickiest; this format is also described in the 2024 paper “Making New Connections: LLMs as Puzzle Generators for The New York Times’ Connections Word Game”.

The New York Times Help Center says the daily game is free to play on its listed platforms, including the NYT Games app and website, and a new game is released at midnight in the player’s timezone. The official archive reaches back to June 12, 2023, but archive access is for All Access and Games subscribers. Playing an archived puzzle can affect some statistics, but does not count toward a current or maximum streak. See the NYT Connections help page for access details.
