This is the archived New York Times Connections puzzle #423, dated Wednesday, August 7, 2024—not a current daily puzzle. Find the words below, then reveal the clues one at a time before checking the four groups and answers.

How Connections works

Connections is a New York Times word game: sort 16 items into four groups of four based on a shared connection. The puzzle can be played on desktop or mobile through NYT Games.

The 16 entries are X-RAY, BYTE, RADIO, DRILL, DISHWASHER, RAM, MICROWAVE, SERVER, COMEDIAN, COOK, STUFF, HOST, PACK, VISIBLE, BRIDLE, and JAM.

Progressive hints for August 7

Try each clue before moving to the next; the final group is the most dependent on wordplay.

  1. Yellow: Squash in.
  2. Green: Think of a setting like The Bear.
  3. Blue: Radiations.
  4. Purple: Each answer has something that can mean “a small quantity.”

Answers for Connections #423

Color Category Words Connection
Yellow CRAM JAM, PACK, RAM, STUFF Each can mean forcing or fitting something into a space.
Green RESTAURANT JOBS COOK, DISHWASHER, HOST, SERVER These are roles found in a restaurant.
Blue ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM MICROWAVE, RADIO, VISIBLE, X-RAY These name regions or types of electromagnetic radiation.
Purple THINGS WITH BITS BRIDLE, BYTE, COMEDIAN, DRILL Each connects to “bit” in a different sense or phrase.

Was puzzle #423 difficult?

Marc McLaren, TechRadar’s Global Editor in Chief, offered a subjective assessment in his August 6, 2024 guide: “It’s been a while since we’ve had a truly difficult Connections puzzle… and that hasn’t changed today.” That is his opinion, not a measured difficulty rating.
