  • Purple: The shared word is JOINT.

NYT Connections #665 answers

The four completed groups were:

Color Category Words
Yellow ALOOF COOL, DISTANT, REMOTE, RESERVED
Green UTILITIES CABLE, GAS, TRASH, WATER
Blue WHAT AN ELECTROMETER MEASURES CHARGE, CURRENT, RESISTANCE, VOLTAGE
Purple ___ JOINT DOVETAIL, HIP, PIZZA, SPIKE LEE

Yellow: ALOOF

COOL, DISTANT, REMOTE and RESERVED can all describe a person who is emotionally detached or standoffish. The traps are their other meanings: “cool” can refer to temperature, while “remote” can suggest a device or location.

Green: UTILITIES

CABLE, GAS, TRASH and WATER are household or municipal utility services. TRASH is easy to overlook because it may initially look like a synonym for junk or garbage rather than a service.

Blue: WHAT AN ELECTROMETER MEASURES

CHARGE, CURRENT, RESISTANCE and VOLTAGE are electrical quantities. “What an electrometer measures” is the puzzle’s category label; it should not be read as a universal claim about every electrometer configuration.

Purple: ___ JOINT

Each answer forms a phrase with JOINT:

  • Dovetail joint: A woodworking joint.
  • Hip joint: An anatomical joint.
  • Pizza joint: An informal term for a pizza restaurant.
  • Spike Lee joint: A phrase associated with one of filmmaker Spike Lee’s films or works.

This was likely the trickiest group because it relies on several different meanings of “joint” rather than one shared subject. HIP can look like a body-part answer, and PIZZA may reveal “pizza joint” without making the other connections obvious.

How Connections works

NYT Connections presents 16 words that must be divided into four groups of four. Select four words and submit them as a group. The categories are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally easiest, followed by green, blue and purple. You can make up to four mistakes before the puzzle ends. The board is designed to include misleading overlaps, so a plausible connection is not always the intended one. The NYT Help Center explains the game’s rules and access options.

Can you replay this puzzle?

Connections is available on the NYT Games website and in the Games app. The NYT archive includes older puzzles for eligible All Access and Games subscribers, with games dating back to June 12, 2023. Archived play can affect some statistics, but it does not count toward current or maximum streaks. New puzzles release at midnight in the player’s local time zone, so “today’s puzzle” can briefly differ by location around the daily reset.
