What this setting actually disables
This switch disables the NVIDIA App’s automatic optimization of newly detected games and apps. It does not disable NVIDIA software altogether, and it does not prevent every possible source of graphics-setting changes.
NVIDIA’s optimization feature can modify a game’s local configuration files and apply recommended settings intended to balance image quality and performance. In the NVIDIA App, per-game recommendations are managed from the Graphics tab, where users can also apply them manually with Optimize.

For reference, NVIDIA documents the App’s graphics controls at its NVIDIA App feature overview and explains that optimization changes local configuration files in this support article.
Disable automatic optimization in the NVIDIA App
- Open NVIDIA App in Windows.
- Click Settings in the left navigation.
- Open the Features tab.
- Scroll to Games and Apps.
- Turn off Automatically optimize newly added games and apps.
Close and reopen the app, then return to the same location to confirm the switch remains off. If you cannot find the option, install the latest NVIDIA App version and check whether the wording has changed. The current path is interface guidance rather than a guaranteed label for every release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRestore games NVIDIA already changed
Disabling automatic optimization stops future automatic actions; it does not necessarily restore settings that were already modified.
- In NVIDIA App, open Graphics.
- Select the affected game.
- Choose Revert, if the control is available.
- Launch the game and configure its graphics options manually.
- Close and relaunch the game to check that the settings persist.
Use Revert as a starting point, not as a promise that every previous preference will be reconstructed. Depending on the app version and game, it may return the title to an earlier or default state. If you have a known-good configuration backup, restoring that file may be more reliable.

After reverting, check the settings most likely to affect both image quality and performance:
- Resolution and display mode
- Texture quality and texture streaming
- Shadow quality
- Ray tracing
- DLSS and other upscaling options
- Frame generation
- NVIDIA Reflex
- V-Sync
- Frame-rate limits
Avoid clicking Optimize again after configuring the game manually. That button remains a separate manual action even when automatic optimization is disabled.
Back up configuration files before making complicated changes
Games store graphics settings in different locations, including their installation folders, saved-game directories, and Windows user folders. If a title uses extensive mods, custom launch parameters, accessibility settings, or unusual configuration tweaks, make a copy of its configuration files before experimenting.
Do not delete configuration files as a first-line fix. Deletion can remove controls, display preferences, mod settings, and accessibility options. Use the game’s own reset controls or NVIDIA’s revert option where possible, and restore a backup only when you know which file contains the desired settings.
Legacy GeForce Experience instructions
If you still use GeForce Experience rather than NVIDIA App, the older control is usually found here:

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
- Open GeForce Experience.
- Click the gear-shaped Settings icon.
- Open the Games section.
- Clear Automatically optimize my games, or the similarly worded automatic-optimization checkbox.
- Open the game list and revert any title already optimized.
- Reapply your preferred settings inside the game.
The exact wording and location varied between GeForce Experience releases. Do not use this legacy path as the current NVIDIA App path. NVIDIA has moved GeForce Experience features into NVIDIA App and encourages remaining users to upgrade; see NVIDIA’s migration announcement.
If your settings keep changing
Confirm the switch stayed off
Restart NVIDIA App and Windows, then revisit Settings > Features > Games and Apps. If the switch has turned itself back on, the setting may be account- or user-specific, particularly on a shared PC. Confirm it under the affected Windows or NVIDIA account.
Check whether Optimize was clicked manually
Automatic and manual optimization are different. The Graphics page can still show an Optimize button, so an accidental click can change the game even after the automatic feature is disabled.
Check G-Assist
G-Assist is separate from NVIDIA’s normal Optimal Playable Settings system and can adjust game settings through commands. Disable or avoid it while troubleshooting. NVIDIA describes its capabilities on the NVIDIA App page.
Investigate other utilities
Look for other software that manages game profiles or performance modes, such as ASUS Armoury Crate, MSI Center, laptop-vendor utilities, Razer Cortex, Intel Graphics Command Center, AMD Adrenalin on systems with switched GPUs, mod managers, or launcher-based optimization tools. These are examples to investigate, not proof that any particular utility is responsible.

Consider the game’s own auto-detection
A game may recalculate its recommended settings after a driver update, monitor or resolution change, hardware-detection change, major patch, or regenerated configuration file. Disabling NVIDIA optimization does not disable the game’s internal auto-detection.
Resolve cloud-save conflicts carefully
NVIDIA says optimization updates local settings, which can conflict with cloud-stored configuration data. If Steam reports a synchronization conflict, choosing cloud data may restore older settings; choosing local data preserves the local configuration. Select the version you actually want before launching the game again. NVIDIA explains this situation in its cloud-conflict guidance.
Check when the change occurs
If settings change during gameplay, immediately after a game patch, or when a laptop performance or GPU mode loads, the NVIDIA App may not be responsible. Check the game, launcher, driver profile, and laptop utility before removing NVIDIA software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does disabling optimization reduce performance?
Not inherently. You are opting out of NVIDIA’s automatic recommendations, not disabling the GPU or lowering its capabilities. You remain responsible for choosing settings appropriate to your hardware and performance target.
The trade-off is straightforward:
- More control: custom settings are less likely to be overwritten by NVIDIA’s automatic feature.
- More consistency: useful for competitive players, mod users, streamers, and anyone prioritizing stable frame times.
- Less convenience: newly installed games will not receive NVIDIA’s automatic one-click recommendations.
- More manual work: new games may initially use their own defaults, which may not suit your PC, monitor, or preferred visual-quality target.
NVIDIA’s recommendations are not guaranteed to be ideal for every player, game patch, mod setup, display, or latency requirement. A competitive player may reasonably choose lower settings, while another player may prefer higher image quality.

Should you uninstall NVIDIA App?
Usually, no. Disabling automatic optimization is the better first step if you still want driver management, ShadowPlay, the NVIDIA Overlay, Game Filters, DLSS-related controls, or other NVIDIA App features. NVIDIA’s current app combines these functions in one application; its release highlights describe the broader feature set.
Uninstalling the app can be useful as a diagnostic step if settings continue changing and you have eliminated other causes. If the changes stop afterward, that suggests the app may have been involved, but it does not prove that every reset was caused by automatic optimization. Uninstall only if you do not need the app’s other features or have confirmed that removal is an acceptable workaround.
Alternatives and related controls
Hide a game from the NVIDIA App library
Some current users report using a game’s three-dot menu to hide it from the library. This can reduce accidental optimization prompts, but it is a workaround rather than a clearly documented global disable. The title may still be available through a hidden-games filter.

Use NVIDIA Control Panel for driver-level settings
NVIDIA Control Panel supports global and program-specific driver settings through Manage 3D settings. It does not replace a game’s graphics menu and cannot universally prevent a game or another application from rewriting its own configuration. See NVIDIA’s Control Panel documentation.
Do not confuse this PC gaming feature with NVIDIA’s older GameStream page titled “Disable Game Optimizations.” That control concerns streaming behavior and is a different feature, with separate caveats around HDR.
