How to approach the October 2 Pips puzzles
NYT Pips is a single-player domino logic puzzle with conditions attached to colored regions. Begin with the region that has the fewest ways to satisfy its rule, then track the pip totals that remain possible. When a domino crosses a region boundary, each half counts toward the condition in the region it occupies; a tile can therefore help constrain more than one region. The October 2 answer guide presents its placements by region rather than as a full spatial diagram.

For general context, the independent site EnergyPips’ October 2, 2025 page describes dominoes and region rules, and says its generated boards use a standard double-six set. EnergyPips says it is independent and unaffiliated with The New York Times, so that description is not official confirmation of the NYT board or its layout.

Show Easy answers
- Less Than (2): Every value in the space must be less than 2. Reported placement: 0-2 horizontally.
- Not Equal: Reported placements: 0-2 horizontally, 4-2 horizontally, and 5-1 vertically.
- Number (1): Reported placement: 5-1 vertically.
- Equal (3): Reported placement: 3-3 horizontally.
- Number (2): The guide says, “Everything in this space must add to 1,” then reports 2-6 vertically. The label and stated target conflict, so the intended clue cannot be determined from the text.
- Number (12): Reported placement: 1-6 horizontally.
Medium: hints and reported placements
Use the sum and inequality regions to narrow the choices, then check how tiles shared across regions affect each condition.

What these answers do—and do not—show
The date-specific Mashable guide, attributed to the Mashable Team and timestamped October 2, 2025 at 10:17 AM UTC, reports the placements above as region-level hints. Its accessible text does not give each tile’s board coordinates, so these values and orientations should not be treated as a complete placement map. The Easy Number (2) line also remains unresolved because its target label conflicts with its stated sum.
