Ocarina of Time 3D vs. Original: Which Version Is Better for a First Playthrough?

For most first-time players, choose The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D on Nintendo 3DS. It preserves the 1998 adventure while adding stereoscopic depth, more flexible item controls, quick access through the touch screen, and a quality-of-life fix for the Water Temple issue. Those changes remove friction without changing the central reason to play the game: exploring Hyrule, solving dungeons, and following the same story.

Choose the Nintendo 64 original instead if your priority is experiencing the authentic 1998 presentation, using the original controller layout, playing on N64 hardware, or collecting the original release. The better version depends less on graphics preference than on whether convenience or historical authenticity matters more to you.

What “Ocarina of Time 3D” actually is

The original The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launched for Nintendo 64 in 1998. Nintendo brought it back as Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS in 2011. The later release is a remastered version of that same adventure, not a new story or a separate sequel.

The word “3D” refers to the Nintendo 3DS edition and its stereoscopic presentation. You are still playing Ocarina of Time, but the world is rendered to create a sense of depth on the 3DS screen. The remake also changes how you reach items and menus, and it addresses a well-known Water Temple usability problem.

Nintendo’s own description frames the 3DS release around full 3D visuals, extra features, streamlined controls, and the Water Temple fix. Those are the practical differences that matter most during a first playthrough.

Controls and item switching

How the Nintendo 64 layout works

The N64 version assigns usable items to three C buttons. That layout is part of the original controller’s design and is immediately recognizable to anyone revisiting the game on its launch hardware. It also means that changing the items currently assigned to those buttons is a regular part of play.

For a first-time player, this arrangement has two effects. First, the controller gives the game a distinctive period feel: the C buttons are not merely camera inputs or spare keys, but a dedicated item interface. Second, the player must work within the limits of three physical item assignments at a time. That is authentic, but it can make transitions between exploration, combat and puzzle solving feel more deliberate.

What the 3DS changes

The 3DS edition uses A, B, X and Y buttons for play, while also placing special buttons on the touch screen. Nintendo describes those touch controls as a way to switch items, the map and menus quickly. Instead of treating equipment management as a pause in the action, the remake gives you more immediate access to the things you need.

That change matters most when you are learning the game rather than replaying it from memory. New players spend more time checking maps, trying unfamiliar items and correcting an incorrect assignment. Touch-screen shortcuts lower the cost of those actions, so experimentation is less disruptive. The extra buttons also give the remake a more flexible control surface than the three-item C-button arrangement.

The trade-off is that the 3DS layout is no longer an exact reproduction of playing on Nintendo 64. If the physical feel and restrictions of the original controller are part of what you want to study or collect, the N64 version is the more faithful choice. If your priority is reaching items and menus with fewer interruptions, the 3DS controls are the practical winner.

Visual presentation and stereoscopic depth

The original look

The Nintendo 64 release gives you the visual presentation associated with the game’s 1998 debut. Colors, character models, environments and interface behavior belong to that original hardware context. For some players, that is not a disadvantage to overcome; it is the point of choosing the original.

Playing the N64 edition also preserves the relationship between the game and the controller, television and console for which it was designed. The image is part of a historical package, and collectors or long-time fans may value that package more than a cleaner or more spatially pronounced presentation.

What stereoscopic 3D adds

The 3DS remaster adds stereoscopic depth, making layers of the environment appear separated rather than presented as a single flat image. Nintendo designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto explained the motivation in terms of wanting to see Hyrule’s scenery in stereoscopic 3D and to create the feeling of really “being there.”

“The biggest reason for me personally was that I myself wanted to see the majestic scenery of Hyrule in stereoscopic 3D.”

That effect changes how scenery reads during exploration. It is a presentation feature, not a new quest line or alternate plot. Some players will find the added depth makes spaces easier to parse and the world more inviting; others will prefer the flat, original image. The important distinction is that 3DS gives you a different visual experience of the same adventure rather than a different adventure.

Stereoscopic depth is therefore a preference multiplier. If the idea of seeing Hyrule with visible depth appeals to you, the remake offers something the N64 release cannot. If you are specifically documenting or reliving the 1998 look, the original remains the correct version even though it lacks that effect.

The Water Temple quality-of-life change

Why this issue affects the choice

Nintendo’s official summary specifically identifies a fix for the Water Temple issue in the 3DS edition. That matters because the Water Temple is a point at which navigation and equipment management can interrupt the flow of a first playthrough. A player encountering the game for the first time has no prior route memorized and is more exposed to any friction in the dungeon’s progression.

The original N64 release retains the Water Temple experience as it existed in 1998. That is valuable when your goal is historical authenticity, but it also means accepting the issue that Nintendo later addressed. The 3DS edition is the better fit if you want to encounter the dungeon with that specific usability problem reduced.

What the fix does and does not mean

The Water Temple change is a quality-of-life adjustment, not evidence that the remake turns the dungeon into a different game. It does not justify treating the 3DS edition as a separate adventure. Rather, it removes a documented source of friction while leaving the dungeon’s role in the larger journey intact.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For a first playthrough, that distinction is decisive. You are already learning the world, the items and the dungeon logic. Choosing the version that reduces a known navigation obstacle lets you spend more attention on solving the game’s problems instead of wrestling with an avoidable interface burden.

Authenticity, nostalgia and collecting

Choose the original if historical fidelity is the goal

The N64 release is the only way to experience the game exactly as a 1998 Nintendo 64 release. Its controller layout, visual presentation and original dungeon experience belong together. Reproductions or remasters can preserve the design, but they cannot recreate every part of that hardware-era context.

This makes the original especially appealing to collectors and to players who are comparing how the game was designed around the N64 controller. The three C-button item assignments are not an inconvenience to ignore in that context; they are evidence of the interface decisions made for the original system.

Why nostalgia can outweigh convenience

A first playthrough does not have to mean the most streamlined playthrough. Some players want their first memory of Hyrule to come from the same version they saw in 1998, or from the cartridge and console they remember. For them, the extra touch-screen shortcuts and remastered depth of the 3DS edition would answer a different question than the one they are asking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If that is your motivation, accept the original’s limitations deliberately rather than treating them as defects. The N64 version is the right choice when the experience you want is “Ocarina of Time as a Nintendo 64 game,” not merely “the easiest way to finish Ocarina of Time.”

Hardware and access should be part of the decision

The two editions require different consoles. The original requires Nintendo 64 hardware and the original game; the remaster requires Nintendo 3DS hardware and the 3DS edition. Before comparing visual or control preferences, identify which system you can actually use comfortably and which release you can obtain legitimately.

Hardware access also affects the kind of session you want. An N64 setup supports the original controller experience and collector value. A 3DS setup supports the remake’s touch-screen shortcuts and stereoscopic presentation. Neither platform is a universal replacement for the other because each is tied to a different version’s defining features.

If you are buying a physical copy, verify that the release matches your region and that the seller’s description is accurate. For an original cartridge, condition and authenticity matter to collectors. For the 3DS edition, confirm that you are obtaining the Nintendo 3DS release rather than assuming that any listing with “Ocarina of Time” in its title includes the remake’s features.

Choose the original if…

  • You want the authentic 1998 Nintendo 64 presentation. The original release is the direct source for that look and period-specific interface.
  • You specifically want the N64 controller layout. Items are assigned to three C buttons, which is central to how the original was played.
  • You own or collect Nintendo 64 hardware. The console, controller and cartridge form the historical experience you are trying to preserve.
  • You value authenticity over convenience. You are willing to keep the original Water Temple experience and item-management limitations because they belong to the release you want.
  • You are studying the game as a 1998 artifact. The original gives you the design in its launch-era context instead of the later remaster’s adjustments.

Choose 3D if…

  • This is your first time playing. The remake retains the same adventure while reducing interface friction that can distract a new player.
  • You want faster item and menu access. A, B, X and Y buttons are supplemented by touch-screen controls for quick switching among items, the map and menus.
  • You want stereoscopic depth. The 3DS edition adds the sense of spatial separation that Miyamoto described as a desire to feel more present in Hyrule.
  • You would rather avoid the original Water Temple issue. Nintendo identifies a fix in the 3DS release.
  • You prefer a modernized presentation to strict period accuracy. The remake’s purpose is to make the classic more convenient and visually refreshed.

A practical first-playthrough decision process

  1. Start with your reason for playing. If the goal is to understand why the game is celebrated while minimizing avoidable friction, begin with the 3DS edition. If the goal is to recreate the 1998 release, begin with Nintendo 64.
  2. Check the hardware you can use. Confirm that you have access to a working Nintendo 64 setup or a Nintendo 3DS setup before treating the other version as a realistic option.
  3. Decide whether controller authenticity matters. Choose N64 if the three C-button item system is part of the experience you want; choose 3DS if flexible button and touch-screen access matters more.
  4. Decide how important stereoscopic depth is. Select the 3DS edition if seeing Hyrule with stereoscopic depth is a major attraction. Select the original if the 1998 image is the attraction.
  5. Account for the Water Temple. A player who wants Nintendo’s documented fix should use the 3DS edition. A player preserving the original dungeon experience should use N64.
  6. Make the choice once and commit to it. Both versions deliver the same core adventure. Switching solely because one edition is “the real game” misses the actual distinction: one is an authentic 1998 presentation, and the other is a remastered, convenience-focused presentation.

Bottom line for a first playthrough

Ocarina of Time 3D is the stronger default recommendation. Its stereoscopic visuals, expanded button layout, touch-screen shortcuts and Water Temple quality-of-life fix directly address the areas most likely to slow down someone learning the game. You still receive the same landmark adventure, but with fewer interface interruptions.

The original Nintendo 64 version remains the better personal choice when authenticity is your priority. Its value comes from being the 1998 game as released: original presentation, original controller assumptions and original dungeon experience. Neither version invalidates the other; they serve different reasons for playing.
