The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D becomes much easier once you understand three habits: read the A-button prompt, use L-targeting before fighting or aiming, and assign items deliberately to the X, Y, or touch-screen slots. The Circle Pad handles movement, B swings the sword, holding R raises the shield, + opens the minimap, and START saves.
This guide is written for a first-time or returning player using the Nintendo 3DS edition. It explains the control layout, how targeting and item shortcuts work, what to do during your first session, and how to recover when combat, aiming, or navigation feels confusing.

The controls you need first
The 3DS version uses a small set of buttons for many different situations. Learn the purpose of each input before trying to memorize every sword technique.

| Input | Primary function | Beginner use |
|---|---|---|
| Circle Pad | Move Link; walk, run, swim, and trigger automatic jumps at gaps or ledges | Use it for careful positioning as well as travel. Running toward a gap or ledge makes Link jump automatically. |
| A | Context-sensitive action | Read the prompt beside Link, then press A to talk, inspect, pick up, open, or perform the nearby action. |
| B | Sword attack | Tap B for a normal sword swing. Other attacks depend on movement and timing. |
| Hold R | Raise the shield while moving with the Circle Pad | Use it to guard while watching an enemy rather than trading hits. |
| L | L-targeting; restores the behind-Link view when no target is available | Lock on before close combat, projectile attacks, or a distant conversation. |
| X, Y, or a touch-screen item slot | Use the item assigned to that shortcut | Check the icon before pressing a button, especially after changing equipment. |
| + | Display the minimap | Open it when you lose your bearings or need to confirm your position. |
| START | Save | Save when you finish a session so your progress is not left only in memory. |
The important pattern is that the buttons are not one-action keys in every situation. A changes according to what Link is standing near, L changes according to what can be targeted, and your item buttons change according to your assignments.

How movement, prompts, and the camera fit together
Start by treating the Circle Pad as a positioning tool rather than simply a way to move forward. Small adjustments determine whether Link is close enough to activate an A-button prompt, lined up with an object, or able to run cleanly toward a ledge. The game handles jumps automatically when Link runs toward a gap or ledge, so you do not need a separate jump command for ordinary traversal.
Read the A prompt before pressing
When an A-button label appears, pause for a moment and read what the game is asking you to do. The same physical button can represent a conversation, an examination, or another nearby interaction. If nothing happens, move a short distance and look for the prompt again; many interactions depend on Link’s exact position and facing direction.
Use the behind-Link view as your reset point
When no target is available, pressing L can restore the view behind Link. This is useful after turning the camera while exploring. Re-centering the view before walking through a doorway, approaching an object, or starting a fight reduces accidental movement in the wrong direction.

L-targeting keeps an enemy or object in Link’s sights. Once a target is locked, Link can move left and right to strafe while continuing to face forward. That combination—fixed attention on the target plus sideways movement—is the foundation of safe beginner combat.
Lock on before you attack
- Face the enemy or object and press L.
- Confirm that the target remains in Link’s view.
- Move sideways with the Circle Pad to circle the target while keeping Link facing it.
- Use B for a sword strike, hold R when you need to defend, or press the assigned item button for a projectile or other item.
Without a lock, an attack can send Link past the enemy, turn him away, or leave a projectile pointed slightly off line. Targeting first removes much of that uncertainty.

Talk to someone who is not right beside you
Nintendo’s quick guide describes a second use for L-targeting: target a distant character and then press A to talk. If an A prompt does not appear while you are standing nearby, try moving into a clear position, pressing L, and following with A.
When there is no target
L is not only a combat button. If no valid target is present, it can restore the behind-Link view. Press it when the camera has become disorienting, then resume movement with the Circle Pad.

B swings the sword, while holding R raises the shield as Link moves. The official manual lists six sword actions: horizontal swing, vertical swing, thrust, spin attack, jump attack, and roll attack. You do not need to use all six immediately. Start with a repeatable defensive rhythm and add other attacks as your movement becomes comfortable.
| Attack listed in the manual | What a beginner should understand |
|---|---|
| Horizontal swing | A standard side-to-side sword strike for ordinary openings. |
| Vertical swing | A top-to-bottom strike; useful when your approach and timing call for a more direct line. |
| Thrust | A forward-pointing attack that rewards accurate spacing. |
| Spin attack | A wider attack that can cover more space around Link when timed correctly. |
| Jump attack | An attack performed as Link closes distance through a jump. |
| Roll attack | An attack associated with Link’s rolling movement. |
A safe beginner combat loop
- Press L to keep the enemy in view.
- Hold R while you observe the enemy’s position and movement.
- Circle-strafe with the Circle Pad instead of walking straight into danger.
- Release your guard briefly to use B when an opening appears.
- Return to a guarded, targeted position if the first strike does not finish the encounter.
This approach is slower than attacking blindly, but it teaches spacing, camera control, and timing at the same time. If a fight feels chaotic, simplify: target, guard, circle, then strike.
How item shortcuts work on Nintendo 3DS
Items are assigned rather than permanently attached to one button. Select an item, place it on X, Y, or a touch-screen slot, and then press that shortcut whenever you need it. The touch inventory is one of the 3DS edition’s defining conveniences, but it also means your button assignments can change during play.

Assign an item
- Open the item interface.
- Select the item you want to use.
- Place it on X, Y, or an available touch-screen slot.
- Return to play and verify that the expected icon is visible in the chosen slot.
- Press X, Y, or tap the slot to activate the item.
Make the icon check a deliberate habit. After you replace equipment, the same shortcut may now perform a different action. A brief glance prevents wasted throws, accidental use, and confusion about why a familiar button no longer behaves as expected.

Use targeting before throwing or firing
For a projectile or any item that must travel toward a specific point, press L first. The target keeps the line aligned while you activate the assigned item. Nintendo’s instructions also describe changing to a first-person viewpoint for aiming, which can help when a target is difficult to see from the normal camera.
Choose assignments you can reach without looking away
Put the item you expect to use repeatedly on a button you can press confidently, and keep less frequent tools on the touch screen if that feels more natural. There is no single correct layout. The useful layout is the one whose icon you can identify quickly and whose button you do not press by accident.
What to do during your first session
A spoiler-light first session should establish your controls and observation habits before you worry about speed. Follow this sequence whenever you begin a new game or return after a long break.
- Walk the immediate area. Move in short arcs with the Circle Pad and watch for A-button prompts. This teaches how close Link must stand for an interaction.
- Re-center the view. If the camera drifts, press L when there is no target to restore the behind-Link view.
- Practice a safe target. Use L on an enemy or object, strafe left and right, and release the lock when you understand how Link tracks it.
- Test defense. Hold R while moving so you can see how guarding changes your approach.
- Assign an item. Place one item on X, Y, or a touch slot, then confirm the icon before using it.
- Check the map. Press + to display the minimap and identify where Link is standing.
- Save your session. Press START before stopping for the day.
This routine builds the muscle memory that later puzzles and fights assume. It also gives you a recovery plan: if you become lost, re-center the view, open the minimap, and inspect nearby prompts instead of wandering randomly.

How to learn a newly acquired item
When you receive a new item, the surrounding area is often the safest place to understand its purpose. Dungeons commonly introduce an item’s function through nearby environmental features, so experimentation is part of the intended learning process.
A practical test sequence
- Assign the new item to an X, Y, or touch-screen slot.
- Look for a nearby object, opening, or feature that appears interactable.
- Press L if you need to keep the object aligned.
- Use the item once, then observe exactly what changed.
- Try the same item from a different position if the first attempt does nothing.
- Check the icon again before moving on, especially if you changed assignments.
Do not assume that a failed attempt means the item is useless. It may require a particular distance, angle, target, or environmental feature. Move Link, restore the camera, and try again before abandoning the idea.
Using the minimap and saving without losing your place
Press + to display the minimap. Use it as a quick orientation check rather than leaving the game paused after every step. Open it when you exit a room, after a long detour, or whenever landmarks no longer match your mental picture.
Saving with START is the clean end-of-session habit. Save after you have learned a new route, changed equipment, or completed a useful stretch of exploration. If you are stopping immediately after an experiment, save before turning off the system so you do not have to reconstruct the same setup later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Use the feature safely
- Hold the system firmly with both hands.
- Leave enough room around you before moving the system.
- Make small movements first; large motions can make it harder to keep track of Link and the target.
- Return to the normal view when you need precise Circle Pad movement or want to re-center behind Link.
First-person viewing is an option, not a requirement. If it feels awkward, keep the ordinary camera, use L-targeting, and rely on the minimap for orientation.
Common beginner problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Link walks past an object without interacting | You are outside the prompt’s position or facing the wrong way. | Move a short distance, turn toward the object, and watch for the A-button label. |
| The camera points somewhere unhelpful | You lost the behind-Link view while exploring. | If no target is present, press L to restore the view. |
| Attacks miss even though the enemy is nearby | You are attacking without a stable target or spacing. | Press L, strafe with the Circle Pad, and attack only after Link is facing the enemy. |
| Link takes damage while you try to attack | You are committing to attacks without guarding or repositioning. | Hold R, circle the enemy, and wait for an opening before using B. |
| An item button produces the wrong action | The assignment changed. | Pause, inspect the X, Y, and touch-slot icons, then reassign the item you want. |
| A projectile goes past its target | The shot was made without alignment or from an unclear viewpoint. | Use L-targeting first; switch to first-person aiming if the normal view is obstructed. |
| You cannot remember where you are | You have traveled without checking orientation. | Press + for the minimap, re-center with L when possible, and resume from a known landmark. |
| You must repeat progress after quitting | The session ended without a save. | Press START before stopping and make saving part of your routine. |
Which version of Ocarina of Time should you play?
This guide focuses on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, the Nintendo 3DS version of the classic. Nintendo describes this edition as retaining analog Circle Pad control while adding a touch-based inventory. Those two features directly affect the beginner experience: movement remains analog, while item management can be handled on the lower screen instead of relying only on buttons.
| Consideration | What the 3DS edition provides | Why it matters to a beginner |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Circle Pad control for walking, running, swimming, and automatic jumps | Analog movement makes small positioning corrections easier to practice. |
| Inventory | Touch-screen item slots alongside X and Y shortcuts | You can assign tools to a visible slot and confirm the icon before use. |
| Targeting | L-targeting with strafing and a behind-Link view reset | The system teaches a consistent way to face enemies and objects. |
| Aiming | First-person viewing by moving the system, as described in the edition’s instructions | You have an optional alternative when the normal camera makes a target hard to see. |
If you own the 3DS edition and want the control scheme covered here, it is the version this guide addresses. If you are choosing another release, verify that its button layout and inventory interface match the instructions you are following; the principles of reading prompts, targeting, guarding, and checking assignments still provide a useful foundation, but the physical inputs may differ.
A compact practice checklist
Use this checklist at the start of a new save or after returning from a long break:
- Move in a controlled circle with the Circle Pad.
- Approach an object and identify the A-button prompt.
- Press L with no target to restore the behind-Link view.
- Lock onto a target and strafe without losing sight of it.
- Hold R while moving to practice guarding.
- Use B once, then return to a guarded position.
- Assign an item and verify its icon on X, Y, or the touch screen.
- Use L before trying a projectile or other targeted item.
- Press + to open the minimap.
- Press START before ending the session.
Once these actions feel automatic, the game can spend its attention on exploration and puzzles rather than on reminding you which button does what.
