It costs 30 rupees, gives you 10 Bombchus for the game, and becomes available after you complete Dodongo’s Cavern. The essential technique is to line Link up before each launch: once a Bombchu starts moving, it cannot be steered.
Use the center of the lane as your default alignment, wait for the Blade Trap or Cuccos to clear a lane, and launch only when the route is open. The second phase changes targets, so the left target needs a floor-to-wall route while the right target requires a small adjustment from center.

What Bombchu Bowling is and when it opens
Bombchu Bowling takes place in the Market area of Hyrule Castle Town while you are controlling child Link. You can enter after completing Dodongo’s Cavern. Each attempt at the minigame costs 30 rupees, and the game supplies 10 Bombchus for that attempt.
Every round asks you to send a Bombchu down a lane toward a target on the far wall. The Bombchu runs on its own after you release it, while hazards move through the lane. Your task is therefore an alignment-and-timing puzzle rather than a steering challenge. A successful throw depends on Link’s starting position, his facing angle, and the instant you choose to launch.

Keep Link behind the bowling line during the attempt. Moving forward after release does not redirect the Bombchu and can put Link in the path of an obstacle, so make all positioning decisions before pressing the item button.
The control rule that determines every throw
The Nintendo 64 instruction manual describes the Control Stick as the way to move Link and make precise positional adjustments. Bombchus behave differently from ordinary thrown items: the manual states, “Once it starts running, you have no control over it.”
That sentence is the most important control information in the minigame. You do not correct a Bombchu with the stick after launch. Instead:
- Move Link to the intended launch point.
- Turn Link so the Bombchu faces the desired lane.
- Watch the moving hazard and wait for a usable opening.
- Release only when the Bombchu’s complete route is clear.
If a Bombchu misses, changing Link’s position during its run cannot rescue that attempt. Save your adjustments for the next Bombchu.
Set up a reliable starting position
Begin from the middle of the lane. The documented baseline is the exact center, described in the walkthrough as slightly to the right of the center arrow. This gives you a repeatable reference for all three phases and minimizes large corrections between throws.

- Walk Link to the center reference point before selecting a route.
- Stop and check that Link is still behind the bowling line.
- Face directly toward the far wall for a straight center attempt.
- For a side target, make the smallest deliberate angle change needed; do not drift while releasing.
- Pause long enough to read the obstacle cycle before committing a Bombchu.
Think of the center position as your calibration point. If a previous throw went too far left or right, return to this reference rather than trying to compensate with a dramatic angle.
Phase-by-phase aiming instructions
Phase 1: the center target
The first target is in the center. The Blade Trap is the hazard that matters here. Watch it move away from the Bombchu’s intended path, then release a straight shot from the center line.

The goal is a clean middle route, not a last-second attempt to pass behind the trap. If the trap is still occupying the central lane, keep Link stationary and let the cycle develop.
Phase 2: a randomly selected target
The second phase can place the target on the left, at the top or center, or on the right. Identify the opening before changing Link’s alignment.
- Left target: Use a floor-to-wall route. Angle the Bombchu so it travels along the floor first, then turns along the wall into the hole. A straight center launch does not provide the documented approach for this layout.
- Top or center target: Wait for a clear lane and send the Bombchu straight from the center reference. The timing window, rather than a large angle, is the main concern.
- Right target: Start from center and make a small lateral adjustment so the Bombchu’s line enters the target. Keep the correction modest; over-rotating is more likely to send the Bombchu past the opening.
Because the target is random, spend a moment identifying which of these three layouts is active. The same alignment should not be reused blindly for every second-phase throw.

Phase 3: the center target with Cuccos
The final phase returns to a center target but adds a large Cucco and a smaller Cucco to the lane. Move back to the center line and observe both birds together. Wait until they leave a usable central route, then launch straight.

A careful release can slip past the large Cucco. The useful opening may be brief, so prepare Link in advance and concentrate on the moment when the lane clears. If either Cucco is still blocking the route, do not throw simply to use the next Bombchu; patience is the safer choice.
How to read the hazard cycles
Bombchu Bowling rewards timing more than speed. Treat each obstacle as part of a repeating movement pattern and watch one complete cycle before deciding when to fire. This is especially important when the Blade Trap crosses the center lane or when the large Cucco and smaller Cucco overlap the route.
Use the following rhythm:
- Stand at the chosen alignment without making small, continuous movements.
- Watch the obstacle move through and away from the intended path.
- Confirm that the route stays open long enough for the Bombchu to reach the wall.
- Launch during that opening, then remain behind the line.
Trying to react after release is ineffective because the Bombchu’s path is fixed. If you miss the timing window, wait for the next cycle instead of forcing a low-probability throw.
Rewards and which prizes repeat
Bombchu Bowling can award several different prizes. The two progression rewards are limited to one each per save file; the remaining prizes can appear again after you have already collected them.

If you are completing a save file, prioritize the Bomb Bag upgrade and Piece of Heart when they appear. Once those one-time prizes have been obtained, later games can still be useful for recurring ammunition or the 50-rupee Purple Rupee.
Rupee and ammunition planning
Budget 30 rupees for each game. The entry fee is separate from the 10 Bombchus supplied for that game, so arriving with a full personal Bombchu stock does not remove the fee. Bring enough rupees to cover repeated attempts if you are learning the hazard timing rather than expecting a first-try clear.
Use early attempts to learn movement cycles instead of making a throw whenever a Bombchu is available. A missed launch consumes part of the 10-Bombchu allotment, while waiting costs time but preserves ammunition for a better opening. This trade-off is most noticeable in the third phase, where the two Cuccos can briefly block the center lane.

The Bombchu hits the Blade Trap
This usually means the launch occurred before the trap had fully cleared the lane. Return to the center reference, watch another movement cycle, and release later. Do not solve the problem by turning sharply; the first phase is designed for a straight center launch.

The left target is missed
Check that you used the floor-to-wall approach rather than aiming directly at the hole from the center. Re-establish the center position, apply the leftward route deliberately, and verify that the floor segment is clear before release.

The right target is overshot
The right layout calls for a small lateral adjustment. If the Bombchu passes the target, reduce the amount of rotation on the next attempt instead of abandoning the center reference.
A Cucco blocks the final attempt
Wait for both Cuccos to leave a usable lane. The large Cucco can be bypassed with a careful straight launch, but only when the opening is present. Throwing while either bird occupies the route is more likely to waste a Bombchu.
Link keeps drifting out of alignment
Release the Control Stick once Link reaches the reference point, then make one controlled facing adjustment. Continuous micro-movements make it harder to reproduce a successful line and can move Link toward the bowling line.

The detailed layouts and aiming routes documented for Bombchu Bowling are based on the Nintendo 64 version. Ocarina of Time 3D includes gallery variants, but the available documentation does not provide a controlled study of input differences, camera perspective, or relative difficulty between the versions.
Use the center alignment, obstacle timing, and left floor-to-wall route as a starting framework, then inspect the target and lane presentation in your version. It is not established that one release is objectively easier. Differences in controller or display perspective may change how comfortable a player feels, but there is no measured evidence here to turn that comfort into a universal verdict.
A compact pre-launch checklist
- Am I playing as child Link in the Market, after Dodongo’s Cavern?
- Have I set aside the 30-rupee entry fee?
- Is Link at the center reference, slightly to the right of the center arrow?
- Which target is active in this phase?
- Is the Blade Trap or either Cucco clear for the entire route?
- For the left target, have I planned a floor-to-wall path?
- For the right target, is my correction small rather than a sharp turn?
- Am I releasing from behind the bowling line?
Once these checks are satisfied, launch and let the Bombchu complete its route without trying to steer it.

The minigame becomes consistent when you treat alignment as setup and obstacle movement as the timing puzzle. Center yourself, identify the route, wait for the opening, and commit only when the Bombchu can travel the full distance unobstructed.
